Product Insights
The Cropped Felted Reprocessed Wool Coat by Contemporaine, a Simons exclusive designed in Canada, offers a core promise of sustainable, three-season versatility at a $195 price point that rivals $250+ coats. Made from 60% reprocessed wool and 40% nylon, its double-sided felt construction traps heat without bulk or lining, while the cropped boxy silhouette layers easily over chunky knits and under overcoats. A full zip and snap placket enable two styling looks, and buttoned cuffs adjust fit. The main tradeoff: it may pill in friction areas, but a fabric shaver resolves this; also, it is designed for fall to early winter, not extreme cold.

Deep Research
Fit profile and styling the cropped boxy cut
- The short, boxy cut also layers cleanly under a longer overcoat or trench without adding bulk to the arms or shoulders, so it doubles as a warm mid-layer on extra-cold days.
- The full-length zipper can be worn closed without the snaps for a cleaner line, or with the snap placket fastened to block wind and hide the hardware; combined with the high neck and buttoned cuffs, the closure system makes this shorter coat surprisingly weather-capable.
- Lightweight double-sided felted wool doesn't drape like a soft knit — it holds its boxy silhouette even when unbuttoned, which is what gives the coat its modern, architectural stance and prevents it from looking slouchy or cardigan-like.
- The roomy straight cut through the body means a chunky knit or even a thin puffer gilet fits comfortably underneath without creating bulk, so the coat can be worn well into winter rather than just as a transitional piece.
- Since the cropped hem hits around the high hip, pairing it with high-rise trousers or a skirt creates a continuous elongated line from shoulder to foot — the universally flattering formula for a cropped jacket, according to style editors.
How this coat compares to similar wool coats
- The coat carries a ‘Simons exclusive designed in Canada’ tag, which ensures it is unavailable through any other retailer and ties it directly to Canadian design — a provenance that adds cachet for domestic shoppers and differentiates it from the globally distributed fast-fashion coats that dominate the under-$200 landscape.
- The coat’s lightweight double-sided felt construction positions it as a fall-to-early-winter layering piece rather than a heavy winter coat, offering versatility across three seasons and filling a mid-weight niche that many budget wool coats bypass in favor of either thin, unlined shells or bulky, non-breathable synthetics.
- Constructed from a lightweight double-sided felt in a reprocessed wool blend, the coat achieves a structured, clean-finished body with an inherent sustainable edge — a fabrication that at $195 CAD is more typical of contemporary labels pushing above the $250 threshold, making it a material-forward value play in its price bracket.
- Where the sub-$200 wool coat market is saturated with long-line silhouettes — from H&M’s $59 felted coat to NA-KD’s $150 belted number — this coat commits to a cropped, boxy shape with a high neck and concealed zip, delivering a decidedly modern, street-fashion-aligned look for buyers tired of the ubiquitous long wool topper.
- At $195 CAD, the cropped style undercuts Contemporaine’s own longer oversized and belted felted wool coats by $55, making it the brand’s most affordable way to experience the same reprocessed wool double-sided felt, and the lowest price of entry for this specific fabrication within the Simons-exclusive range.
Long-term care and durability of felted wool
- High-friction zones like under the arms and where a crossbody bag rests will develop pills due to the shorter recycled wool staple; this is normal wear, not a defect, and a gentle pass with an electric fabric shaver restores the smooth surface without abrading the felt.
- Wool's crimp-based memory requires a full day of rest between wears to spring back to its tailored shape; skipping this recovery period leads to permanent settling of creases and sagging in the cropped, boxy silhouette.
- The structured, boxy silhouette is kept sharp by hanging on a wide, padded wood hanger; wire or thin hangers imprint permanent dimples into the soft felted shoulders and warp the high neck over time.
- The 40% nylon in the blend offsets the inherent brittleness and pilling of short recycled wool fibers, creating a fabric that resists abrasion and holds its shape longer than a 100% recycled wool coat — the synthetic content essentially acts as a toughness backbone.
- True felted wool locks fibers through matting rather than weaving, so cut edges naturally resist fraying — meaning pocket openings, hem edges, and cuffs maintain their integrity through years of friction without requiring bound seam finishes.
- After rain or snow, the coat must be laid flat on a towel away from radiators or direct sun; hanging it wet will stretch the shoulders under its own weight, and direct heat can felt the recycled fibers further, shrinking the garment irreversibly.
- To prevent moth damage during off-season storage, the coat should be professionally cleaned first — body oils and food residues attract larvae — and then sealed in a breathable cotton garment bag with cedar or lavender sachets.
- Monthly steam sessions — from a handheld steamer or a hot shower bathroom — relax wrinkles, neutralize odors, and reinvigorate the wool's natural moisture barrier, reducing the need for dry cleaning to a once- or twice-season frequency that preserves the felt's integrity.
How double-sided felt construction affects the coat
- The 60% reprocessed wool content comes from reclaimed pre-consumer waste, giving the jacket a lower environmental impact than virgin wool while the 40% nylon reinforces the felt, helping the cropped boxy silhouette maintain its crisp shape without sagging or excessive pilling.
- Because the double-sided felt is finished cleanly on both faces, the coat requires no lining, which eliminates internal friction and shed weight — the inside is as neat as the outside, a detail that elevates the garment beyond typical lined high-street coats at this price.
- At a weight that feels more like a heavy shirt than a winter coat, the felted double cloth provides enough insulation for crisp fall days while remaining breathable enough for transitional layering — the high neck and zip-to-snap closure trap heat exactly where it’s needed.
- The coat is built from a felted double cloth — two wool blend layers woven together, then fulled to create a cohesive felt-like fabric — which traps body heat in the air pockets between layers without adding the weight of a lining, making the cropped, boxy silhouette feel airy yet substantial.
What reprocessed wool means for warmth and wear
- Reprocessed wool delivers the same insulation and moisture-wicking performance as virgin wool — the shortened fiber length from recycling does not degrade wool's natural ability to trap body heat while releasing moisture vapor, so this coat functions as a genuinely breathable warm layer rather than a stuffy synthetic jacket.
- The term 'reprocessed wool' specifically describes wool fibers reclaimed from fabric scraps that were never previously used in a finished garment, a pre-consumer recycling stream that preserves longer, less-damaged fibers and more consistent coloration than post-consumer wool shoddy — so the coat's 60% wool content starts from a cleaner, more uniform raw material.

Versatile and warm for late winter, early spring. I usually wear a large but that was too big.
This coat is so cute
Snuggly soft coat. The sleeves are the perfect length for my long arms but I had to size down so i wasn’t too oversized. Even in the smaller size I can layer nicely if the weather dictates.
Magnifique veste!

Q&A
3 answered- What are the care instructions? Specifically, is it dry clean only due to the reprocessed wool content?
- Care instructions are not listed in our product details. Given the 60% reprocessed wool and 40% nylon blend, it is most likely dry clean only to preserve the felted texture. We recommend consulting the garment's care tag or contacting Simons for confirmation.
- Are the buttoned cuffs functional for adjusting sleeve width, or are they purely decorative?
- Buttoned cuffs on coats like this are typically functional, allowing you to adjust sleeve width by buttoning or unbuttoning. While not explicitly stated, the presence of buttoned cuffs suggests they are meant for adjustment.
- The description mentions 'double-sided felt' – does that mean the coat is reversible, or is it simply a two-layer construction with no reversibility?
- 'Double-sided felt' means the fabric has two finished sides, but this coat is not reversible. The full-length zip closure under a snap flap is designed for one orientation, so the coat is worn with one side facing out.
