Product Insights
The Jason Markk Suede Cleaning Kit uses a dry cleaning method—a calcium carbonate eraser followed by a horsehair brush—to prevent water damage that permanently ruins suede by absorbing water and causing fiber compaction, discoloration, and tide marks. The tools are softer than suede and durable, with a sequential process reducing wear, and users report restoring crisp, water-damaged suede. However, the kit may cause light fading on dyed suede, is designed only for genuine suede and nubuck (synthetic results uncertain), contains no liquid cleaner, and is not vegan.
- Water damage
Suede's nap absorbs water like a sponge, causing irreversible fiber compaction, discoloration, and mineral tide marks.
Why this is supported
Suede's exposed nap functions like a sponge, immediately drawing moisture into the fibers.
they function like miniature structural sponges.
shoecarnival.comAs the fibers dry, they contract and mat together, causing pore compaction, localized bleaching, and permanent mineral ringing.
Permanent Mineral Ringing (Staining): As dirty water dries from the inside out, it pushes dirt to the perimeter, creating dark, impossible-to-remove tide marks.
shoecarnival.comOnce these damages occur, they are often irreversible, so avoiding water is critical.
- Dry cleaning
Eraser and brush clean suede dry; water can permanently damage fibers.
Why this is supported
The kit is designed for dry cleaning only. Water triggers three damage mechanisms:
Pore Compaction (Stiffening): The delicate fibers dry bound together, transforming soft, pliable suede into a hard, cardboard-like texture.
shoecarnival.com,
Localized Bleaching (Discoloration): Water breaks down the original tanning dyes, leaving pale, uneven patches.
shoecarnival.com, and
Permanent Mineral Ringing (Staining): As dirty water dries from the inside out, it pushes dirt to the perimeter, creating dark, impossible-to-remove tide marks.

Use the Eraser to dry clean suede and nubuck. Once you've cleaned the suede, use the Suede Brush to revive the nap.

- Material properties
Horsehair bristles (Mohs 1.0–1.5) are naturally soft and lubricated; the beech wood handle is durable and smooth.
Why this is supported
cannot leave an impression on materials harder than themselves
gwbrush.comOn the Janka hardness scale, it scores around 1300 lbf (pounds-force), putting it right alongside hard maple and white oak. This means it can take a beating without denting or compressing easily.
thejimbosliceworkshop.comThe wood also sands to a silky, buttery-smooth feel, providing comfort without degradable coatings.
- Brush
Calcium carbonate eraser cleans with friction, no water or smears.
Why this is supported
The eraser is a purpose-engineered composite of calcium carbonate, SBS, SEBS, TPE, and wax oil that functions as a micro-abrasive.
The eraser acts as a micro-abrasive that lifts the mineral crust away from the nap.
stainremovalguides.comThis mechanical friction removes dirt without water or solvents, and users confirm the approach, advising to
always dry clean it with an eraser and suede 4 way brush.
u/J3sseVentura in r/Newbalance- Limitations
May cause light fading on dyed suede; test on synthetic materials first.
Why this is supported
The eraser's abrasion can fade dyed suede:
The eraser works by abrasion, so there is a slight risk of fading if you scrub too aggressively on dyed suede, especially vibrant colors.
Does the eraser risk fading or discoloring dyed suede, especially on vibrant colors? On synthetic suede, performance is not guaranteed, so testing is advised:
This kit is specifically designed for genuine suede and nubuck. While it may work on synthetic suede (microsuede), we recommend testing on a hidden area first, as results can vary.
Can this kit be used on synthetic suede (microsuede) or only on genuine suede?- Handle quality
Beech wood handle: dent-resistant (Janka ~1300), smooth, coating-free grip.
Why this is supported
The beech wood handle's dent resistance is verified by its Janka hardness, which
scores around 1300 lbf
thejimbosliceworkshop.com— a rating comparable to hard maple and white oak. Its smooth feel comes from the wood's fine grain, which when sanded produces a
silky, almost buttery-smooth surface
thejimbosliceworkshop.comthat reduces hand fatigue. And because this finish is achieved through sanding rather than a coating, it will
feel naturally comfortable without needing any rubberized coating that can degrade over time

- Restoration
Buyers report restoring suede left crispy and rough by water or cleaner.
Why this is supported
Reddit users confirm that after water or standard cleaner leaves suede crispy and rough, the kit's eraser and brush restore the nap.
After it's completely dried use the 4 way brush to get the movement back in the suede.
u/J3sseVentura in r/NewbalanceThe manufacturer guides a two-step process: dry-clean with the eraser, then revive the nap with the brush.
Use the Eraser to dry clean suede and nubuck. Once you've cleaned the suede, use the Suede Brush to revive the nap.
jasonmarkk.caThis dry-cleaning method avoids water damage mechanisms like pore compaction and dye bleaching.
- Tool quality
The brush bristles are softer than suede; eraser lasts dozens of uses.
Why this is supported
The horse-mane bristles (Mohs 1.0–1.5) are softer than suede fibers, with natural oils that reduce friction and a hollow core that wicks moisture.
They also do not hold a static charge, preventing dust attraction.
It is also excellent for ESD brush applications because it does not hold a static charge.
staticfaction.comThe beech-wood handle resists dents (Janka ~1300 lbf), and the eraser—a composite of calcium carbonate, SBS, SEBS, TPE, and wax oil—abrades without leaving residue.
A single eraser typically lasts for dozens of cleaning sessions.
A single eraser typically lasts for dozens of cleaning sessions, depending on how heavily soiled your shoes are and how much pressure you apply.
How many cleaning sessions can I expect from one eraser before it wears out?- Kit design
The sequential eraser-then-brush process reduces wear on each tool.
Why this is supported
The kit’s two tools are designed to be used sequentially: first the eraser, then the brush. Jason Markk’s instructions direct:
Use the Eraser to dry clean suede and nubuck. Once you’ve cleaned the suede, use the Suede Brush to revive the nap.
jasonmarkk.caThis division of labor means each tool performs only its intended task, reducing mechanical wear on both components.
- Compatibility
Designed for genuine suede and nubuck; synthetic suede may work but test first.
Why this is supported
The Jason Markk Suede Cleaning Kit is officially intended for genuine suede and nubuck. Its Q&A states:
This kit is specifically designed for genuine suede and nubuck. While it may work on synthetic suede (microsuede), we recommend testing on a hidden area first, as results can vary.
Can this kit be used on synthetic suede (microsuede) or only on genuine suede? The eraser and brush are engineered for genuine suede's nap, and the zero-moisture method is critical for genuine suede but not for synthetic. Expert advice explains:
Using liquid cleaners on suede is the most common way to cause permanent damage. Suede is highly sensitive to moisture; water causes the fibers to clump together and can shift the natural oils, resulting in a dark, stiff ring that is often impossible to reverse.
stainremovalguides.comThis moisture sensitivity is specific to genuine suede; synthetic microsuede does not share this vulnerability, so the kit's primary method is not necessary for synthetic materials.
- Kit contents
Kit includes a suede eraser (dozens of cleanings) and a brush; no liquid cleaner.
Why this is supported
The kit
only contains a suede gum and a brush though, I would never go near my 750s with soap.

Proper suede cleaning method: dry eraser and brush, avoid water
Man the amount of people I see who put water on suede is wild always dry clean it with an eraser and suede 4 way brush. If you have to use something to really get a stain out very light spray onto microfiber cloth and blot just the area just to penetrate the stain and lightly rub with the microfiber cloth to then let get completely dry. After it’s completely dried use the 4 way brush to get the movement back in the suede.

Technique for cleaning suede with Jason Markk: use premium soft brush and blot dry
I use jason markk all the time. When cleaning suede, use the premium brush with the dark, soft bristles. I think you used the rough one with the yellowish bristles which is for leather. If you don't wanna spend $12 on a premium brush, you can use a soft tooth brush. Just wet it and add the solution. Once you apply the solution, lightly(not too light) go over the area, once you do that take a rag or a microfiber towel if you have one, preferably a microfiber towel. Take the towel and wipe the wet suede back. That should to it
