How to Care for a Down and Feather Coat

Wash your garment at home if you can. Professional cleaning products are too strong and pungent.

Wash your coat separately in cold water, by hand or on the gentle cycle.

Only use mild liquid soap. Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, or products with chlorine in them.

Rinse your garment at least two or three times. Doing so should remove any soap residue. It will also make the down and feathers fluffier.

Dry your garment in the dryer on a low temperature. Add a few tennis balls to the dryer to speed up the process and give the coat more volume. Do not air dry your garment: it takes a lot longer to dry, which could give mould time to develop.

Wool

Wool is naturally insulating and breathable. It wicks away moisture while helping regulate body temperature to keep you warm. It's also dense and thick, which enhances its thermal properties, even when combined with synthetic fibres.

Your Guide to Coats & Thermal Layers

Understanding, choosing, and caring for your winter garments.

How to choose a men's winter coat

If you're looking for a coat that keeps you warm without compromising on style, you've come to the right place. Choose from our selection of top brands and quality-made exclusives and embrace the cold season with confidence, knowing you're properly equipped.

Which material keeps you warmest in winter?

Insulation is the first thing to look at to determine how warm a coat will be. Down is great at trapping heat while still being lightweight and compressible. It's perfect for walking and other moderate-intensity activities. New technologically advanced, high-quality synthetics, such as Thinsulate and PrimaLoft, have also entered the game. Synthetic insulation is quick-drying, breathable, and easy to care for. It retains its insulating properties even when wet, making it ideal for humid climates and higher-intensity sports. For the best protection from winter weather, choose a windbreaker jacket with a water-resistant shell. Our selection includes many styles made from durable fabrics with a water-repellent finish. Want a more elegant winter coat? Choose a style made with at least 50% wool.

What are the best coat brands?

Our assortment includes recognized brands that offer the perfect balance between performance and style. The North Face is a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its innovative technologies. Columbia, meanwhile, offers a wide range of coats for a variety of winter activities. Canadian brands such as Moose Knuckles, Kanuk, Point Zero, and Quartz Co. have the advantage of extensive expertise in dealing with harsh winter temperatures.
