Product Insights
The Fine Twisted Cable-Knit Sweater by Lauren Ralph Lauren uses a 61% viscose, 39% cotton blend to achieve a deeper red color and smoother, low-fuzz surface that resists pilling. Its tighter cable twists and ribbed edging reduce bulk under jackets while preserving a tailored fit and shape retention through washing and wear. However, the crewneck collar is reported as too wide, and the red dye may bleed initially; buyers advise waiting for larger sales or considering cheaper alternatives like Spier & Mackay, as this fine knit is suited for mild weather layering rather than deep winter.

Deep Research
The distinct look of fine twisted cables
- The twisted cables create a play of light and shadow across the fabric, which breaks up the red dye into a spectrum of shades — a solid knit would read as a flat block of color, but the cable pattern gives it a vibrant, dimensional quality that draws the eye.
- The knit incorporates stretch, which allows the cable pattern to move with the body and recover without warping, so the sweater maintains its precise shape and cable definition through a full day of wear and after laundering.
- Ribbed finishing at the neck, cuffs, and hem acts as a structural frame for the cable field — because ribbing naturally pulls in, it creates a clean, tailored silhouette that prevents the knit from looking slouchy and helps the sweater keep its proportions after repeated wear.
- Unlike the oversized ropes of traditional Aran sweaters, the 'fine twisted' cable pattern uses tighter, smaller twists that create a subtle surface interest — it reads as a refined texture rather than a bold graphical motif, making the sweater easier to layer under a structured jacket without visible bulk.
- The 61% viscose in the blend gives the yarn a smooth filament surface that holds the cable twist with exceptional clarity; unlike fuzzy wool or acrylic yarns, each stitch is legible, so the intricate twisted pattern remains distinct even in the red colorway.
How the viscose-cotton blend feels and drapes
- Unlike brushed or short-staple cotton knits that develop a fuzzy halo, viscose's smooth filament structure keeps this cable-knit looking crisp and polished all day — the sweater sheds fuzz and pilling more slowly, maintaining a dressier appearance across wears.
- As a cellulose-based fiber, viscose draws heat away from skin on contact, making this sweater feel refreshingly cool when you slip it on — a tangible difference from polyester blends that trap warmth, and a reason it works across mild fall and spring days.
- Viscose's superior dye uptake yields a deeper, more vibrant red than a pure cotton knit can achieve with the same pigment — the color looks intentional and rich, a subtle mark of quality that distinguishes this sweater from flatter, dustier reds.
Outfit ideas for a lightweight cable knit
- Layering this fine-gauge crew neck over a crisp button-down — letting the collar and cuffs escape — creates a modern preppy look that works for casual days or lunch meetings; the sweater's lightweight knit ensures the shirt layers lie flat, avoiding the bulky bunching heavier cable knits tend to produce.
- When paired with soft wide-leg trousers, this regular-fit fine cable knit helps create a balanced silhouette where the textured upper half doesn't overpower the volume below; the stretch viscose-cotton lets the sweater skim the body, so the overall look stays relaxed yet clean.
- Thrown over a white tank with denim shorts, this sweater's fine cable texture adds instant polish that lifts a basic warm-weather uniform; the viscose-cotton stretch and regular fit keep it from feeling constricting, so you get an easy, lived-in silhouette that still reads as intentional.
- Pairing this red cable knit with a silky slip skirt, metallic heels, and a clutch creates a high-low textural mix that reads as intentionally chic for dinner dates; the regular fit drapes with enough ease to contrast the skirt's fluidity without looking slouchy.
- The saturated red takes well to balancing with camel, charcoal, or navy coats, a muted palette recommended by style guides for cable knits; a camel trench or navy peacoat both harmonize with the fine twisted texture and let the sweater's pattern register without overwhelming.
- The sweater's fine twisted stitch and stretch mean it can slide under an unstructured blazer without creating armhole bulk, and the cable pattern adds depth that a plain knit lacks — a formula endorsed by style editors for a smart casual look that leans on texture rather than pattern.

Q&A
7 answered- What is the exact percentage of viscose and cotton in the blend?
- The sweater is made from 61% viscose and 39% cotton.
- Is this sweater machine washable, or does it require special care like hand washing or dry cleaning?
- This sweater is machine washable, so you can launder it at home without special care. For best results, use only non-chlorine bleach when needed, tumble dry, and iron with or without steam.
- Is the fabric thick enough to be worn on its own, or is it more of a layering piece?
- This sweater is described as a fine and stretch knit, which indicates a lighter-weight fabric that is best suited for layering or wearing alone in mild weather. For colder conditions, you'll likely want to wear it over a top or under a coat.
- Are there any special considerations for the red color? Does it bleed or fade when washed?
- Red dyes can sometimes bleed during the first few washes, especially with viscose blends. To minimize risk, we recommend washing this sweater in cold water on a gentle cycle, and separately from light colors for the first few washes. Using a color-catching sheet can also help prevent dye transfer.
- What’s the difference for washing and drying between wool/cashmere and cotton?
- Cotton is machine washable and easier to care for, while cashmere requires delicate hand washing or dry cleaning to prevent shrinking and damage.
- Where can I find an affordable Ralph Lauren cable-knit sweater?
- Check second-hand marketplaces like eBay or Vinted, wait for sales like Black Friday, or consider replicas from sites like 1688.
- Is the cashmere version durable?
- Cashmere is more delicate, prone to pilling and stretching; the cotton version is thicker, shows less wear, and is more durable.

Yarn material is 100% cotton
I checked the RL and my sweater. The yarn is 100% cotton. I can try to get the actual gauge and cable numbers if that would be helpful.

Cotton cable knit is thicker and easier to care for
I have both the cashmere and cotton. Honestly, the cotton feels a little thicker/heavier and is much easier to care for. 1/4 zips are great, but I feel like they're just not as timeless as the crewneck.

Rep has a better collar fit than retail, but only in women's sizing
Yeah, Lizen has the best crewneck cable knit rep. Sadly only in female sizing. Also, I like the collar better on the rep, because it is more snug. I never liked the collar on retail crewneck cable knit, because it is too wide.
