  • Critique of ‘Start With Why’ book as trite and overhyped

Start with Why is absolutely one of the worst, most pointless books there could ever be. It’s nothing but trite truisms about how “finding your why” is necessary in business, and at least 50% of the book is him gushing over how much he loves Apple. Abysmal book, and I’ve never gotten the hype behind him.

  • Inspirational but not actionable advice

Nothing he’s saying is bad, but it’s also not really concrete and actionable anymore than if I were to tell you “be a good person.” I would absolutely call him an inspirational speaker before I’d call him anything else.

  • Claims are fluff without evidence

As someone already pointed out here - its all fluff. Its nice to listen to get to a certain mindset but a lot of the things he is saying is just pure bullshit... "People feel sudden change but accept gradual change" - What do you base this on Mr. Sinek...?

  • Golden Circle dismisses as pseudo-science without data

We watched the Sinek video this week in class and I was pretty underwhelmed. Just seemed like a lot of pseudo-science marketing speak. One of the big problems I see with the golden circle is that you could easily flip the circle inside out and make a compelling argument that “what” is the most important question. After all, what is the product, so you get into questions regarding differentiation, etc. At the end of the day, he had no hard data to back up any of his claims (Beyond saying he watched every Steve Jobs speech.... sure) so he’s not to be trusted. He came out with a snappy concept to sell a book. People are lazy so they bought into it. End of story.
