Product Insights
Satisfy's Mothtech Cotton Varsity T-Shirt, born from hand-punched Screen Stars blanks before the brand's 2015 debut, uses couture-minded construction with a detachable care tag and pre-washed softness that deepens over time, plus 275 laser-cut holes from sweat-zone mapping for ventilation. The 175gsm organic cotton evolves with the perforations to create personalized drape and airflow, but cotton becomes heavy and wet in humid conditions, limiting performance to dry, low-sweat runs. At $190 CAD (three times a Tracksmith Grayboy tee), its value lies in brand heritage and iconic status—confirmed by Nike's 2024 copycat—rather than a performance upgrade. Buyers with synthetic-sensitive skin report less irritation, though most size up and must wash cold to avoid shrinkage.
Verified claims
- Design origin
- Founder hand-punched Screen Stars blanks days before Satisfy's 2015 debut showroom.
- Ventilation
- 275 strategically placed laser-cut holes derived from sweat-zone body mapping.
- Design philosophy
- Couture-minded construction with detachable care tag and pre-washed softness that deepens over time.
- Moisture
- Cotton can become heavy when wet, so the tee may limit performance in high-sweat efforts.
- Comfort
- Runners with synthetic-sensitive skin report less irritation in this cotton tee.
- Value
- The $190 price reflects brand and design, not a performance upgrade.
- Aging character
- The 175gsm organic cotton and its 275 perforations evolve together to shape a personalized drape and airflow over time.
- Care tag
- External detachable care tag prevents inner seam irritation and fraying over time.
- Shrinkage
- Pre-washed organic cotton may still shrink if not washed cold and air dried.
- Sizing
- Size M body length is 68 cm and L is 71 cm; the tee runs small compared to standard sizing, the brand generally offers a slim-to-regular fit, and many reviewers recommend sizing up.
- Origins
- Satisfy's 2015 hand-punched MothTech set the brand's DNA.
- Cultural influence
- The MothTech laser-perforated look has been imitated by Nike, confirming it as a cultural signature.
- Craftsmanship
- Couture-level: organic cotton, detachable care tag, pre-washed for patina.
- Varsity print style
- Varsity print on distressed cotton blends preppy with punk for a fashion crossover.
- Price comparison
- Priced at $190 CAD, roughly double the Tracksmith Grayboy tee, reflecting iconic MothTech status and luxury heritage.
- Performance tradeoff
- Buyers report cotton becomes heavy when wet; the tee performs well in hot and dry weather, but synthetics may be more effective for high-sweat runs.
- Brand signal
- The detachable external care tag serves as a discreet brand signifier.
- Logo care
- The reflective logo is machine washable if washed inside out on a gentle cold cycle.
- Softening
- The organic cotton jersey softens with each wear and becomes more comfortable over time.
- Material
- 175 GSM organic combed cotton softens with wear; counterfeits are rough.

Watch Out For
Compared To
vs Fake/replica Mothtech tees
Genuine shirts are softer, have better prints, and do not bleed; fakes feel rough and have poor construction.
vs DIY ventilated shirts
Some suggest making your own holes in old shirts, but the cut and placement of Satisfy's holes are seen as superior by some.

Positive review of Mothtech in hot/dry climates
I have a couple, they are pretty nice imho, especially in hotter and drier climates. Could I just naturally thrash some old band shirts? Yes and I have, but I like the fit and designs and the holes are pretty well placed. Light to mid weight Cotton is pretty much the only shirting I can run in in LA and the desert on warmer days (most days).

Explanation of Mothtech as style and branding
This is case of style and branding, just like any other industry and product. Why does one buy an iPhone, a Mac, Gap vs Old Navy? Why does anyone buy Tracksmith? Because there’s a sash across the front? In the same way people payed for frayed Abercrombie jeans, or pay more for vintage Levi’s because they looked lived in. In this case SATISFY is somewhat unique in running. It has a certain lived in look, the tees are cut well, and it makes for some refreshing air flow. They’re unique in a sea of brightly colored neons and white synthetics. While there are more new brands now than ever, the bar is on the floor for running apparel.

Defense of high pricing for running fashion
I think it's pretty clearly tied into product cost. People like to say it's greed but that's more an issue with public companies who need to show YoY or QoQ growth. Very obvious reasons that product costs would go up here and they're surely just trying to maintain their margins. Also it's kind of silly to post "$100+ running shirt?!" on every satisfy post on the running fashion subreddit lol. We know it's expensive. It's "running fashion" not "frugal runners"

Detailed comparison of real vs fake Mothtech quality
I’ve tried one from A express to see what it was like. The prints are awful it’s just a cheap screen print over the top and the holes are underneath not ripped through. Like a silky plastic print. The fits are way way smaller. The quality of the material looks good but feels horrendous, rough to the touch whereas the genuine mothtech are super soft. It also bleeds really badly. I got back from a hot run and my shoulders and back were stained black/grey took ages to get off in the shower. Honestly just look for genuine ones second hand or on sale if you don’t have the money to spend. Don’t waste money on the reps it’s not worth it in the long run at all.

User prefers Mothtech for long runs due to skin irritation
I actually really like it for long runs. Synthetic tends to irritate my skin so I like running in cotton. Yes it's heavier and wetter, but it's worth it for me to not get any irritation.
