Product Insights

This six-piece steak knife set stakes its premium on verified French production in the Auvergne cutlery tradition, since 'Laguiole' itself is an unprotected style name; the modern full-tang all-steel design departs from the classic folding pattern, adding 56.7–113.4 g behind the bolster to balance the knife toward the hand. The AISI 420 stainless blade resists chipping on ceramic plates but dulls quickly and can pit from acidic juices, so it excels as a table knife for cooked meats rather than prep work that hits hard vegetables. The brushed finish hides fingerprints but turns slick under heavy grease, while the solid steel handle never loosens or absorbs water and needs only a damp cloth; a fitted wooden box keeps the blades from scratching each other, and gentle dishwasher cycles are acceptable only with prompt drying. At CAD 210, this set sits far above generic €10 versions, meaning the value depends entirely on authentic French manufacturing—the central tradeoff against the blade's maintenance demands and its straight-edge, meat-focused purpose.

Verified claims

Heritage
Set of six, Made in France, with a signature wooden storage box; styled as sophisticated, elegant, classic, and heritage tableware. Laguiole is not a protected brand name, so French production provenance matters more than the label.
Design form
The full-tang all-steel build is modern table cutlery, not the classic Laguiole folding slipjoint.
Value
At CAD$210 this sits far above ordinary €10 six-piece Laguiole sets, so the premium holds only if French production is verified.
Balance
The full-tang blade and solid stainless steel handle add 56.7–113.4 g behind the bolster, placing the balance point toward the hand for balanced heft.
Construction
Full-tang blade and solid stainless steel handle for balanced heft: the blade steel runs as one continuous piece from tip to butt, leaving no seam or organic scales to split or swell.
Blade steel
Soft AISI 420 stainless resists chipping on ceramic plates but needs frequent sharpening; acidic juices can pit it.
Finish
Brushed/satin stainless hides fingerprints and light scratches, though greasy hands can feel slick until wiped dry.
Edge profile
Straight-edge, non-serrated blades that deliver smooth slicing when maintained; no performance advantage over serrated steak edges is established.
Intended use
Table knife for steak and cooked meat; prep chopping that hits hard vegetables dulls the 420 edge quickly.
Care
Damp cloth wipes the stainless handle clean; wooden box storage and no soaking protect it.
Steel edge tradeoff
AISI 420 blade at HRC 52–56 resists chipping on ceramic plates; requires more frequent sharpening, and can pit from acidic residue if not rinsed.
Corrosion
Steak juices or salt left on the blade can pit the AISI 420 steel.
Storage
Store knives apart in the signature wooden storage box to prevent metal-on-metal scratches and preserve the set's presentation.
Grip
Brushed all-metal handles stay slick under heavy grease or oil; wiping with a dry cloth restores grip.
Durability
Solid stainless steel handle: no loosening or water absorption at the tang joint.
Handle upkeep
Solid all-stainless full-tang handle needs only a damp cloth and dry cloth — no wood conditioning or oiling.
Steel upkeep
AISI 420 is the least corrosion-resistant cutlery grade; rinse off steak juice and dry the blade after use.
Sharpening method
Use a fine whetstone at about 20–25° and finish on a leather strop to remove the burr; avoid coarse carbide pull-through sharpeners and aggressive electric sharpeners.

  • Laguiole knives as decoration, needing frequent sharpening

Laguiole en Aubrac is the largest of all the regional forges that make laguiole style knives, so perhaps they would have the better quality control as all these knives are factory made. I would choose whichever you like better, a steak knife like the ones you are looking at are just decoration/jewelry and any of them will cut terribly if you dont sharpen them often, like very often, specially if you use them on ceramic, porcelain, or stoneware plates. So, get whichever you like more.

  • Soft steel requires frequent sharpening

Site look legit, but never used it. That steel is pretty soft so will need sharpening often if used on a regular basis. I have a handful of clients that bring me sets for touchups almost monthly.
