Product Insights

The Laguiole Heritage Natural Wood Steak Knife Set 6-Pack offers authentic French craftsmanship with blades stamped 'LAGUIOLE' and 'HERITAGE FRANCE', full-tang construction revealed by three brass rivets, and stainless steel at 56-58 HRC for corrosion resistance and home sharpening. At $120 for six, each knife costs $20—less than half premium French brands—with full-tang balance reducing wrist fatigue and preventing accordion cuts, while one-piece steel ensures functionality even if the wood handle cracks. However, frequent honing is needed (steel realigns in seconds without chipping), and hand washing is required to preserve the wood finish; stainless steel resists acidic foods without special drying or oiling, making it suitable for regular use despite the maintenance tradeoff. The set is often recommended as a gift due to its French origin and craftsmanship.

Verified claims

Authenticity
Made in France and sold under the Laguiole Heritage Natural Wood name, which are the key authenticity signals for Laguiole-style steak knives.
Full tang
The blade is a single full-tang piece of stainless steel that runs from tip to butt through the handle, providing strength, balance, and a durable joint that won't loosen or wobble at the handle.
Steel hardness
The blades are hardened to 56–58 HRC, a moderate range that balances corrosion resistance with easy home honing, though it needs more frequent touch-ups than harder steel.
Maintenance
The 56–58 HRC steel benefits from frequent honing, and a few passes on a honing steel restore a working edge in seconds; the stainless composition resists corrosion.
Construction
Full-tang steel design keeps knives functional even if wood handle cracks.
Value
At $120 for a 6-pack, each knife costs $20, less than half the price of premium French Laguiole brands.
Steel Quality
Stainless steel blades (56–58 HRC) resist acidic foods but require frequent sharpening.
Performance
Full-tang balance reduces wrist fatigue and prevents accordion cuts
Durability
One-piece steel eliminates weak joints and handle cracks don't compromise strength
Hand washing
Hand wash only to prevent dishwasher damage to the wood finish.
Rust resistance
The stainless steel resists corrosion and off-flavors from acidic marinades, wine-based sauces, and grilled meats.
Design
Full-tang construction is a distinguishing design feature of this set compared with cheaper partial-tang Laguiole-style knives.
Craftsmanship
Natural wood handles and full-tang construction reflect the French cutlery tradition associated with Laguiole.
Sharpening method
Use a honing steel for regular touch-ups between meals, and restore a dull edge with a fine whetstone (1000–6000 grit); avoid electric sharpeners because the softer steel can be damaged.
Sharpening frequency
Plan on sharpening very often, especially if the knives are used on ceramic or stoneware plates; some owners bring them in almost monthly for sharpening.
Value vs premium French
The six-knife Heritage set at CA$120 works out to CA$20 per knife, which is less than half the per-knife cost of Forge de Laguiole's basic stainless steel sets while retaining full-tang French construction.
Handle care
The set's care instructions call for hand washing and immediate drying rather than oiling; if the wood starts to look dull, a light application of linseed oil can help prevent drying and cracking.
Steel grade
The blades are listed only as stainless steel rather than a named alloy like Forge de Laguiole's Sandvik 12C27, which is the primary cost concession behind this set's lower price and more frequent edge maintenance.

  • Recommendation for Laguiole steak knives

For steak knives, I’d recommend Laguiole knives made in France.

  • Guide to genuine Laguiole knife makers

Laguiole en Aubrac, Forge de Laguiole, Fontenille Pataud and Arbalete are high quality. Au Sabot is a very good budget option. Beware of anything where the maker is located outside of Laguiole or Theirs.

  • Laguiole steak knives are decorative and need frequent sharpening

Laguiole en Aubrac is the largest of all the regional forges that make laguiole style knives, so perhaps they would have the better quality control as all these knives are factory made. I would choose whichever you like better, a steak knife like the ones you are looking at are just decoration/jewelry and any of them will cut terribly if you dont sharpen them often, like very often, specially if you use them on ceramic, porcelain, or stoneware plates. So, get whichever you like more.

  • Soft steel requires frequent sharpening for Laguiole steak knives

Site look legit, but never used it. That steel is pretty soft so will need sharpening often if used on a regular basis. I have a handful of clients that bring me sets for touchups almost monthly.
