Product Insights
The Parikia Jute Rug by Momeni delivers a rare sculptural centerpiece through hand-finished scalloped edges, embodying Pure Salt's coastal design in 100% jute at a value where the designer collaboration adds little cost over comparable rugs. Its 0.25-inch pile reduces shedding and clears doors, and the jute softens over time to surpass sisal in comfort. However, achieving this unique aesthetic requires vigilant upkeep: a rug pad trimmed half an inch inside the rug, suction-only vacuuming twice weekly, and quarterly rotation to avoid curled scallops. Initial shedding is heavy but subsides within months, and the rug develops character with age, making it a deliberate choice for those who prize form and are willing to invest in maintenance.
Verified claims
- Design
- Hand-finished scalloped edges create a rare sculptural centerpiece distinct from typical jute rugs.
- Edge maintenance
- Special care: trimmed rug pad, suction-only vacuum, quarterly rotation.
- Aesthetic
- Pure Salt's clean, coastal design ethos is realized through 100% jute and scalloped edges.
- Value
- At $915 CAD, the designer collaboration adds little cost over comparable jute rugs.
- Durability
- With a 0.25-inch pile and handwoven jute, the rug sheds less, is easier to vacuum, and develops character with age.
- Vacuuming
- Vacuum twice weekly with suction only, no beater bar; use a hard-floor attachment and run it parallel to the scalloped border, limiting passes over the edge, to control shedding and protect edges.
- Rug pad
- Use a rug pad trimmed 1/2 inch inside the rug perimeter to prevent edge curling and distortion.
- Price per sq ft
- $13.70/sq ft for the 5'x8' size — a $54 premium over the Lewis — for its scalloped edge.
- Pile height
- 0.25-inch (0.5 cm) pile reduces shedding and clears doors; the Lewis is 0.5 inches.
- Jute material quality
- High-quality jute softens and nearly stops shedding within six months.
- Rotation
- Rotate the rug every 2-3 months to distribute wear across scallops.
- Curled scallops
- Dampen curled scallops and press flat overnight with books.
- Softness
- Softer than sisal and becomes more comfortable after the shedding phase
- Scalloped edge
- Scalloped edges need a rug pad trimmed half an inch inside to prevent curling
- Spill cleaning
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth; for stains, gently dab with mild detergent and water or a dry-cleaning powder, then blot dry—avoid rubbing or saturating the jute.
- Care
- Initial shedding is noticeable but diminishes substantially within a few months.
- Comfort
- Jute is softer underfoot than sisal or seagrass rugs.
- Uniqueness
- No two Parikia rugs are identical; handwoven variations create a unique patina.
- Break-in
- Initial shedding subsides; the rug becomes softer and more supple underfoot.
- Material and construction
- The Parikia is 100% jute and handwoven.
- Country of origin
- The Parikia rug is handwoven in India.
- Placement
- The jute is soft enough for living rooms and bedrooms, where natural fiber rugs are often avoided.

Positive experience with Momeni rugs despite shedding
I really like Momeni rugs—I’ve used them for years. They are not a Target specific brand. The brand is offered at many US retailers. The Momeni rugs I have do shed especially at first. The shedding does slow time with time.
