Product Insights
Natural Chic Artisanal Rug from Simons Maison is a hand-knotted New Zealand wool rug with felted loops that create a suede-like hand, firm cushion, and natural abrash variegations. Its uncut loops resist crushing and the repairable structure lasts 50–100 years. Natural lanolin repels spills and keeps colors true, while the wool regulates humidity and insulates warmth and quiet. At $298, it offers long-term value. Practical tradeoffs: low pile (0.25–0.5 in) fits under doors but requires a rug pad to minimize shedding and prevent slipping, and vacuuming must be on suction-only mode following the pile direction. Monthly rotation and professional cleaning every 3–5 years maintain its beauty. Available in three precise sizes.

Deep Research
The feel and look of low-pile wool
- Felting the loops fuses the wool fibers into a smoother, more cohesive face — the process transforms what would otherwise be a nubby texture into a soft, almost suede-like hand, which is why the rug feels 'luxurious' and 'warm' despite the relatively short pile height, and why it sheds far less fiber than a raw loop or cut-pile wool rug.
- Thanks to the knot density inherent in hand-knotted construction and the felted loops’ compactness, stepping onto the rug delivers a firm, mat-like cushion rather than a sinking plushness — it’s forgiving enough for sitting or stretching but stable underfoot, a quality that pairs well with minimalist décor that favors function over frill.
- Despite its modest profile, the felted wool traps a significant amount of air within the pile, providing thermal and acoustic insulation that takes the edge off cold floors — and wool’s ability to absorb and release moisture without feeling damp further amplifies the sensation of warmth, making the rug feel cozier than its thickness alone would suggest.
- The short, dense loops preserve the crispness of the rug’s neutral variegations, because light doesn’t get buried in tall yarns — the grey, beige, and off-white tones appear as clear, intentional shifts rather than blurred swirls, which reinforces the clean Scandinavian aesthetic.
- With a pile measuring between 0.25 and 0.5 inches, the rug belongs to the medium-pile category, which is comfortable under bare feet yet still allows easy vacuuming and keeps doors with standard clearance (about 0.5–0.75 inches from the floor) from scraping — a practical floor-height profile for bedrooms and living spaces.
- New Zealand wool’s high crimp and elasticity means the rug will bounce back from furniture indentations and daily footfall; even though the pile is low, the wool’s natural spring gives it a firm, supportive cushion that doesn’t compress permanently — a trait that prolongs the rug’s shape and feel for years with basic care.
- The rug’s surface is composed of uncut, felted wool loops rather than cut pile, so it resists the crushed-down pathways and vacuum-track impressions that develop in plush cut-pile carpets — this structural resilience keeps the texture even and the color consistent, even in areas that see regular foot traffic.
What hand-knotting means for durability and value
- Hand-knotted rugs can be repaired by re-weaving damaged sections knot by knot, a process that is virtually invisible; by contrast, hand-tufted rugs are not repairable once their backing fails, so this rug can be refreshed rather than discarded.
- Quality wool hand-knotted rugs like this one survive 50 to 100 years with proper care — and in many cases reach 150 years — making the purchase an heirloom that rewards generations rather than a shorter-term replacement.
- Flipping a hand-knotted rug over reveals the same pattern as on the front — same design, same colors, slightly less vibrant — because the knots are the structural pile itself, a hallmark that machine-made or hand-tufted rugs cannot duplicate.
- New Zealand wool’s inherent crimp gives the pile a spring-like memory — press down and it bounces back in a second or two, helping the rug resist flattening and keep its plush feel underfoot year after year.
- A 9x12 foot hand-knotted rug at 100 KPSI contains roughly 1.5 million knots and takes a single weaver about 8–10 months to complete — the price reflects that labor-intensive process, not just the material cost.
- The rug’s described subtle neutral variegations are characteristic of abrash — the natural color shifts from small-batch wool dyeing — which is not a flaw but a sign of handcrafted authenticity that adds painterly depth to the floor.
- Knot density, measured in knots per square inch (KPSI), governs how crisp the design looks and how dense the pile feels — hand-knotted rugs typically range from 40 up to 300+ KPSI, with higher counts enabling sharper curves and a more substantial, longer-lasting surface.
- Unlike tufted rugs where a latex backing holds the pile and typically breaks down in 7–15 years, this hand-knotted rug ties each strand of New Zealand wool directly to the warp foundation, so there is no adhesive to deteriorate and the rug’s structure remains intact for decades.
Why New Zealand wool matters for this rug
- A natural lanolin coating on the wool fibers causes liquid spills to bead momentarily rather than soak in, giving owners a short but critical window to blot and prevent permanent stains—an everyday benefit in a natural-fiber rug that does not rely on chemical surface treatments.
- New Zealand wool's raw fleece ranks among the whitest in the world—owing to South Island mineral-rich pastures and selective breeding—so when the fiber is dyed to produce this rug's subtle neutral variegations, the base undertone does not yellow greys or dull ivories, delivering the crisp, nuanced palette that defines the Scandinavian look.
- Wool's hygroscopic structure absorbs up to 30% of its weight in water vapor, working as a passive indoor humidity regulator that reduces condensation and mold growth, while its natural dust-mite resistance and flame-retardant properties (it chars but does not melt) make this hand-knotted piece a healthier, safer choice than synthetic rugs.
- The helical crimp in New Zealand wool fibers functions as a microscopic coil, enabling each felted knot to spring back after footfall—and because NZ wool's crimp is finer and more consistent than most competitors, the rug resists flattening and holds its pile height longer than lower-grade wools under equivalent use.
Caring for a delicate wool pile rug
- Using a vacuum’s beater bar or rotating brush on this rug catches and snaps individual knots, causing cumulative pile loss and surface fuzzing that looks like wear but is actually mechanical damage—suction-only vacuuming along the pile direction is the single most important care rule for maintaining the surface.
- A quality rug pad goes beyond slip prevention by absorbing footstep impact and reducing friction between the rug and floor, which directly lessens the agitation that loosens wool fibers and causes pilling and shedding over time.
- Hand-knotted rug pile has a natural direction, and vacuuming or brushing against it can lift fibers and accelerate pilling; gently brushing in the pile’s lay restores a uniform surface, which matters especially on a low-pile rug like this where directional changes are more visible.
- Even in a low-traffic room, fine soil works deep into a hand-knotted rug’s dense knot structure over time; a professional cold-water extraction cleaning every 3–5 years renews the pile and lifts embedded grit that suction-only vacuuming misses, prolonging the rug’s life without overwetting the wool.
- Because hand-knotted rugs rely solely on knots to secure the pile—not latex or adhesive—they avoid the dry rot failure mode of tufted rugs and can last 50–100+ years; proper care for this rug is therefore all about managing the wool fiber, not preventing structural breakdown.
- Clothes moths that feed on wool protein thrive in dark, undisturbed areas; regular vacuuming of the rug’s edges and under furniture, combined with the recommended rotation that shifts shadowed zones, physically disrupts this habitat and protects the rug without applying moth-proofing treatments that could alter dye color.
Why each rug is one of a kind
- The horizontal tonal bands that appear in the grey field are abrash — the natural result of dyeing wool in small batches and the single most reliable visual cue that the rug was hand-knotted, not power-loomed.
- The abrash in this rug will not look the same from every angle or at every hour; light bands that read as pale grey in morning sun may soften to a deeper tone by evening, giving the room a subtle, breathing quality that a perfectly uniform rug cannot match.
- In the rug market, abrash is not a flaw but a certification of craft: it confirms that the wool was dyed in small artisan batches and that the knots were tied by hand, a combination that mass-market production deliberately avoids to maintain color uniformity.
- Since hand-knotters tie knots row by row from the bottom up, a switch to a new yarn batch creates a crisp, horizontal color step that spans the full width — a direct imprint of the weaving process that machine-made rugs, built from continuous industrial yarn, can never produce.
Scandinavian minimalism in rug design
- With a pile height of just a quarter to a half inch, the rug follows the Scandinavian preference for low-pile, flatweave-style constructions that handle daily foot traffic without feeling precious — it sits flush under doors and furniture, making it a practical choice for high-use spaces like dining areas and living rooms where deeper shags would quickly show wear.
- Offered in three precise dimensions rather than a single scale, the sizing reflects the Scandinavian discipline of choosing a rug that fits a room’s exact layout — selecting the 245x305 cm for a seating arrangement or the 275x365 cm to fully extend under a dining table prevents the floor from reading as broken and keeps the eye moving smoothly through the space.
- Each wool loop is individually felted to create a dense, cushiony surface that functions as a tactile anchor — in true Scandinavian fashion, the rug defines a zone and softens acoustics through warmth and texture rather than loud color, keeping the visual field calm and uncluttered.
How the price stacks up against comparable rugs
- At 298 CAD for the 150x245cm (roughly 5'x8') size, the Natural Chic rug undercuts the Quince Chloe — a direct-to-consumer benchmark hand-knotted in 100% New Zealand wool — by about $80 USD in currency-adjusted dollars, putting it noticeably below the $299.90 USD price tier that defines the value end of the hand-knotted market.
- The Heathered Wool Knotted Artisanal Rug from Simons Maison — sharing the same hand-knotted construction and premium wool but carrying a heathered colour variation — is listed at $598 on ModeSens, more than double the Natural Chic's 298 CAD, reinforcing that the Natural Chic sits at the value entry point of the brand's knotted rug program.
- With a 150x245cm footprint (roughly 39 sq ft), the Natural Chic rug delivers a per-square-foot cost of about $7.60 CAD — a stark contrast to the $41.67 CAD per square foot of a small hand-knotted wool accent like the KB Rugs Nepali 2'x3' at its regular $250, demonstrating how the medium size leverages the fixed labor of hand-knotting over more surface area for a dramatically better price-per-size ratio.
- Specifying 'the highest quality New Zealand wool' aligns the Natural Chic rug with more expensive hand-knotted pieces like the $299.90 USD Quince Chloe and the $598 Simons Maison Heathered, indicating that the cost savings on this model stem from efficient production or low markup rather than a material downgrade, so the buyer attains the same long-staple, lustrous, durable wool found in pricier hand-knots.

Nice rug, decent price
This is a nice looking rug, good quality and at a decent price. I agree with some of the other reviews that say the photos don't quite show its full look, making it a bit risky to order considering you're paying shipping costs on both ends. This is my first time ordering from Simon's and I was impressed overall.
Loved the rug - just bought another one.
Didn’t realize Simons sold rugs. Came across this rug by happenstance. It’s a great neutral soft rug at a good price. Just bought another one as I loved it so much!

Love this rug. Beautiful and great quality. The shipping is hard though. Recommend you use a company that gives people windows for arrival as it is a deterrent to ordering for delivery!

S’use facilement
Dommage!

Looks nice
Love the look but the fibres are already coming lose from vacuuming. I've had it less than a month and can already see myself needing to trim lose fibres in the near future, for the price I expected a bit better quality. Probably won't last long.
Absolute perfection!
I am beyond thrilled with this soft, wool area rug. The colour and texture are perfect and I am amazed by the price given the quality. It has tied my whole room together for fall.

Beautiful in colour
It’s nice detail rug. Just sheds wool most times
Great Look and Feel!
Very happy with this purchase. It looks very qualitative. The colour is exactly like on picture. Would highly recommend

Feels and looks like a quality rug. Comparable to the EQ3 Jasper rug but at a way better price.

Beautiful wool rug at a reasonable price
I debated this rug for a long time before purchasing, as I was concerned about only seeing 2 photos online before making such a large purchase. Fortunately the other reviews were very helpful. I wanted a light coloured rug but with enough colour variation to camouflage dirt or stains (2 young kids!) I bought the "assorted beige" rug and am very happy with the colours; it does appear lighter in person. (Simons - please add more photos or at least have one in store to see!) I love the neutrality of the rug, it has some warmth to it and would go with any beige/grey decor. It's nice and soft. A bit thinner than other wool rugs that I compared it to in person, but more affordable price. No weird smell. Can't comment yet on shedding or durability.
Beautiful quality
Very nice quality for the cost -
Nice but colour is off
This is a nice rug, especially from afar. My issue with this rug is that it’s a bit more yellow toned than I was anticipating. They are also quite a few pieces of wood an other items in the carpet. Seems to be well made otherwise. I decided to return
Bon rapport qualité-prix
Beau tapis, belle apparence. Doux et chaud sous les pieds. Livraison rapide. Très satisfait.

Beautiful and cozy
Purchased for my dining room and it’s perfect, very soft
Really great
At first, I was worried the dark grey was too dark, so I ordered another rug to layer on top. But by the time the other rug arrived, I had fallen in love with the calming, clean look of it
Good quality
We just received our two area rugs. They are good quality, a good price and it was a quick delivery. The colour was accurate.
Excellent
top!
top!
Delayed delivery
Was asked to provide feedback but I haven’t actually received the rug. Delivery notice says delay but no further information has been provided and I have no idea when it will be delivered.
Love it!!!
Looks so good in my bedroom
Tapis artisanal chic
Il est très beau ce tapis. Il embellit très bien une pièce.
It's perfect
I bought this rug in the ivory color which I don't think is available anymore, but it is totally perfect! Great quality, and it looks exactly like it did in the picture online. Very pleased
Beautiful quality and soft underfoot
This is a very good value for a wool rug. Using it without a rug pad and it is soft underfoot. The colours were difficult to predict from the website and I had difficulty deciding between the assorted beige and off-white. Went with assorted beige as I thought it would be more practical. Good decision. It is a neutral blend that is easy to fit into a wide range of colour schemes. Some loose fibres shedding but not excessive.
Super beau!
Lighter colour than shown
The "assorted beige" colour is definitely lighter than the photo on the website suggests. Thank you to the other reviewers who mentioned this, leading me to take a chance! The rug is mostly cream coloured, with flecks of grey and brown. It's what I hoped for. The quality of the rug seems very good - nice and soft, and seems well finished. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Tapis artisanal
Good quality, good price
Comment about transport. I ordered a tablecloth, placemats and a carpet on the same order. They arrived quickly and in good condition. BUT…they arrived in Mont-Tremblant in two different trucks, about one hour apart. Mont Tremblant is about 125 km from Montréal. It might be a good idea for the planet if such orders were shipped together.
Beau tapis
J’adore 🥰

Inaccurate color on biege rug
Lovely rug, great quality, very soft. The main issue is that the photos are too filtered and do not represent the true colors. This rug is light cream primarily. The photos make it look much darker and ashier. It's a shame because you have no way of seeing the rug in store or anything to get an idea of what it looks like, and it's very hard to re-package the rug to return if it's no good. Be aware. Simons, one extra photo showing the true color of the rug would be massively helpful.
Great quality
Great quality for a really good price compared to what else is out there. It didn't have a smell per other reviews and it came with silica gel. It is on the thicker side so it might foul doors.
Nice rug but smells awful
It looks good, it feels good, it smells like a sour sheep.
Shed excessively
I looked at the online review but no one mentioned it. It was indeed very chic; I love the texture and look. But from the get go, it shared excessively. I will have a big ball of fluff a few times a day. It slows down after a while but it is still pretty excessive. Maybe it is just mine? Not aure

Magnifique!
Love everything about this rug.
Love everything about this rug. It is beautiful, soft and was affordable compared to other similar rugs.
love it
I bought this rug in grey in the larger size and I'm very happy with it. It's very well made and sturdy, and I love that it's made out of natural undyed felted wool. It's soft and comfortable on the feet and it looks beautiful in the room. For the quality and size the price is quite fair. I'm so glad I took a chance on this one. It's exactly what I was looking for!
Exactly as the photo
Colours are warm and quality seems great. No shedding or pilling
Gorgeous natural fibre rug
Love this heavy braided rug. Colour as expected. Looks and feels great !
Belle qualité, prix raisonnable

Gorgeous, but sheds
This rug is stunning and worth the price. However, the wool pills/sheds as others have said.

Simply elegant
I originally got the small one but after it being in the space I returned it and got the biggest one. The rug is stunning, it’s soft on your feet, amazing quality and I’m so happy with it. Great product and a great price too!
Great rug but smelly
Great rug, super soft and exactly what I was hoping for. Unfortunately it is quite smelly. We've being airing it out and spraying with febreeze for two weeks and it still has a strong musty smell.
12x9 natural colour rug recommend it!
This rug exceeded our expectations. It’s beautiful and soft under foot.
Magnifique et de bonne qualité!
Magnifique et de bonne qualité!
Beau tapis
Beau tapis, bonne qualité, tres doux. Agréable marcher dessus pieds nus! Laine de grande qualité. Tres bon prix.
Très beau tapis, mais. . .
Belle qualité et belle couleur

It’s beautiful. I ordered because my sister had one too and they’re so nice.
Q&A
1 answered- Does this rug have a latex or synthetic backing, or is it just the wool pile woven through to the back?
- This rug is hand-knotted wool with no latex or synthetic backing — the wool pile is woven directly through to the back, which is typical for hand-knotted rugs. That's why we recommend using a rug pad underneath for grip and protection.
