Product Insights
The Ambassador loafers from Dr. Martens combine a chunky matte finish and large tassels with Ambassador leather that requires sizing down 1-2 sizes for heel slip prevention; the Goodyear welt allows resoling, and after hundreds of wears the leather develops patina and tassels drape naturally, while light rain beads off and Wonder Balsam conditions without flattening texture, making them a versatile bridge between tailoring and denim.
- Sizing
Buyers often need to size down 1-2 sizes to avoid heel slip.
Why this is supported
Reddit users consistently recommend sizing down: one user reports needing to go from EU 44 to 42,
Je vais devoir commander la paire en 42EU je pense, donc réduire de 2 tailles
u/benormalous in r/DrMartens. Another user explains heel slip as the reason:
I’d suggest downsizing if you feel uncomfortable with the slipping.
u/rkts13 in r/DrMartens. The sizing inconsistency is partly due to different lasts—comfort lasts run larger—and the absence of half sizes adds to the difficulty. The Ambassador leather's immediate comfort means no painful break-in, but the tassel can press if sized too small, reinforcing the importance of getting size right.
- Break-in
Buyers report Ambassador leather eliminates tassel pressure break-in; conditioning helps if needed.
Why this is supported
The tassel strap is a known pressure point during break-in, but the soft Ambassador leather is reported to avoid this. One buyer of the Ambassador version said:

u/rkts13 in r/DrMartensThe design tradeoff shows that the distinctive tassel is the source of both the style and the discomfort in other versions, but the Ambassador leather eliminates this compromise.

Adrian loafers use different lasts causing fit issues
Docs use different lasts (foot shapes) and they’re not that clear about it. Most newer outsourced (not made in England) unisex classic styles will use lasts they call comfort or standard, it fits larger and has more toe room. Made in England unisex, vintage, and some current outsourced use heritage lasts, they fit smaller and have a tapered toe.

Heel slippage concern and sizing down advice
I usually wear size 8 for docs boots. Fits a bit loose but I feel more comfortable that way than tight and it looks more proportional I feel. But for the loafers I went size 7 cos they don’t have laces to tighten and docs run a little big anyway. It’s still a struggle to put them on but now that they’re broken in they don’t hurt at all when wearing. I’d suggest downsizing if you feel uncomfortable with the slipping.

Tassels pointing up issue on Adrian loafers
the tassels on one shoe are pointing almost vertically up! I thought that’d be a silly reason to return when I got them and that they’d relax but no joy yet, any ideas?

Ambassador leather comfort vs smooth leather
The smooth leather looks cooler tbh! But I already have other pairs in the same style so I opted to have this one. But if you don't have yet, just get the smooth leather and just be patient in breaking it in. This one though, you don't need to. Comfortable since day 1!
