Shrunk 2+ inches in length with cold water wash and no dryer. They are now ankle length. Very high waisted meaning saggy crotch if tied at natural waist. Seams are scratchy and don't lay flat. True to size? Short legs and big at the top? Its hard to answer this question.

Ralph Lauren quality decline over time
The quality of Ralph Lauren clothing started its decline soon after the company released an IPO and went public. For me absolute peak Ralph Lauren was in the late 80's and early 90's when he made such amazing clothes like tweed pants and thick lambswool sweaters the likes of which would never be made today. I remember going to the Filene's in Westfarms Mall in West Hartford, CT and being amazed at all the incredible stuff that was available, and none of it with all these ridiculous logos and branding. Even just comparing the staple oxford cloth button down, it has been made with thinner and thinner fabric and is of such poor quality now that it in no way justifies the price. As the OP states, if you have an idea of what you want or need, you will do so much better to go to an actual tailor and have it made there for you, and usually for about the same price. Polo and Ralph Lauren has degenerated into costume, not clothing.

They are sleeping pants so I would definitely say it's better for them to be a bit bigger, as opposed to being a bit too small!
