Product Insights

Grangers 2-In-1 Waterproofing Cleaner is the only major-brand combined wash-and-reproof treatment, offering a single-cycle convenience that halves time, energy, and water compared to two-step methods, but trades off breathability on hardshells, where spray-on DWR is preferred. The PFC-free formula requires mandatory heat activation for bonding and more frequent maintenance, while optimal results demand a clean machine, extra rinse, stain pre-treatment, and single-garment dosing. Each 300ml bottle treats up to five jackets at about $4.80 per garment, backed by Bluesign certification, UK manufacturing with 60–80% lower carbon footprint, and 100% recycled bottles.

Verified claims

Application process
Full DWR performance requires heat activation; treat garments separately for best results.
Use case
Buyers report spray-on DWR for hardshells; 2-in-1 for synthetic insulated jackets.
Convenience
One-cycle convenience trades off breathability on hardshells.
Targeted application
Spray-on DWR targets high-wear areas like shoulders, hood, and cuffs.
Market position
Grangers 2-in-1 is the sole combined DWR from a major aftercare brand.
Heat activation
Heat from a dryer or iron is mandatory to bond the DWR to fabric.
Reactivation
A wash-and-dry cycle alone can restore factory DWR on many garments.
Pre-treatment
A clean machine and an extra rinse are critical for DWR bonding.
Maintenance
PFC-free DWR demands more frequent heat activation and washing to maintain beading.
Machine preparation
For best results, clean machine, extra rinse, and pre-treat stains.
Garment loading
Treat garments one at a time with 100 ml of product per jacket.
Garment compatibility
Avoid wash-in for breathable hardshells; it reduces breathability.
Single-cycle
Single wash-and-dry cycle cleans and reproofs, equalling Nikwax's two-step results.
Restoration
One wash-and-dry cycle restores leaky jackets to full waterproofness.
Usage
For best results, clean the machine, treat one garment, add extra rinse, and heat cure.
Breathability tradeoff
Can reduce breathability in shells; spray-on DWR preferred for membrane garments.
Value
One-step process and 300ml treats up to 5 jackets.
Application procedure
Optimal bonding requires a clean machine, pre-treated stains, extra rinse, and single-garment dosing.
Bluesign certification
Bluesign certifies this product through chemical screening and on-site factory audits.
UK manufacturing
Made in Derbyshire factory since 1937 with 60–80% lower carbon and 100% recycled bottles.
Sustainability
World's first aftercare bluesign partner (2007); PFAS-free since 2020; pouch cuts plastic 72%.
2-in-1 performance
Only major 2-in-1 wash+waterproof; one cycle halves time/energy/water; heat activates DWR.
Cost per jacket
Each jacket treatment costs about $4.80 from a 300 ml bottle.
DWR durability
Proper heat activation and separate reproofing extend DWR life and bottle yield.
Resource savings
One cycle uses roughly half the water and energy of two-step methods.
Product uniqueness
Grangers is the only aftercare brand offering a 2-in-1 wash-and-proof treatment.
Environmental footprint
Uses 100% recycled bottle and UK manufacturing with 60-80% lower carbon footprint.
Packaging
100% recycled bottle now; 72% less packaging with future pouch.
Brand commitment
PFAS-free since 2020; bluesign partner since 2007.

Compared To

vs Nikwax wash-in DWR

Spray-on is strongly preferred for shells due to targeted application and breathability preservation.

Source Threads

  • Wash-in DWR can impede breathability

you don't want to mix this Granger stuff. Because DWR repels water, and sweat is mostly water. We have high tech shit that's hydrophobic in some places and hydrophilic in others to move your sweat away from your body, and to allow water vapor to pass through. DWR can get in the way of that goodness. That's why we spray it on the outside, where we want it, instead of washing it in, through and through.

  • User prefers Grangers for one-step convenience over Nikwax

I’ve used both Nikwax and Grangers. Both work well with GTX products in my case. I prefer Granger mainly because it requires one time wash and dry only.

  • Positive experience using Grangers 2-in-1 on various Arc'teryx items

I’ve washed the atom, beta AR, Squamish hoodie, Nodin, Patagonia nanopuff, basically most of them short of ones containing down with grangers 2 in 1. I’ve found it works great. DWR spruces right back up in the dryer on medium heat. Ymmv however, Goodluck!

  • Recommendation to avoid wash-in DWR for shells

Get grangers tech wash and spray on dwr. Wash in dwr isn’t great especially not for shells

  • Spray-on DWR preferred for targeted application

Go with Grangers Performance Wash and Grangers Performance Repel Plus, separately. You'll want to wash the jacket, as directed, and then spray the Repel Plus on, as directed. You need to wash a garment before spraying with DWR. Don't use regular detergents, fabric softeners, etc. 2-in-1 is probably fine (and very likely won't do any harm), but I've started using the spray as opposed to a wash for the DWR. That allows me to really concentrate the spray in areas that get more wear.

  • General advice on reactivating or reapplying DWR

Gore Tex recommends home laundry over dry cleaning. After its dry put it in the dryer to reactivate the DWR. If that's gone there's stuff you can spray or wash in to replace it.
