Product Insights
Birkenstock's Madrid Translucent Buckle Sandals blend heritage comfort with a jewelry-like oversized buckle made from glossy, durable synthetic. The closed-cell EVA footbed offers immediate arch support, a deep heel cup, and skin-friendly, odor-resistant, washable convenience. However, the single-strap design compromises stability and can cause blisters, heel drag, faster sole wear, and slipperiness on wet surfaces. The adjustable buckle and narrow width option improve fit, while the footbed retains support for years with intermittent use, though EVA compresses faster than cork under heavy daily wear and can shrink in extreme heat.
- Buckle aesthetic
Oversized translucent buckle acts as a jewellery-like statement accessory debuting in EVA for SS25.
Why this is supported
Fashion editors describe the oversized buckle as a jewellery-like piece that functions as a statement accessory. This is the first time the Big Buckle appears in EVA, debuting in transparent hues as part of the Spring/Summer 2025 collection. The single wide strap and oversized buckle create a sleek, minimalist silhouette that transitions from poolside to evening. The clear buckle aligns with Y2K transparent accessories trends and acts as the outfit's focal point, allowing the wearer to skip metallic accessories while achieving a styled look.
- Buckle material
Buckle is made from durable stainless synthetic that maintains its glossy finish through wear and water exposure.
Why this is supported
The oversized buckle is constructed from a stainless synthetic material engineered to maintain its glossy, light-refracting surface through regular handling and water exposure, ensuring durability for everyday use.
- Break-in
EVA footbed molds quickly; buyers report that buckle and strap can cause blisters early on.
Why this is supported
The EVA version breaks in faster than the cork version because EVA is more flexible and pliable out of the box, allowing the footbed to mold quickly. The contoured footbed provides moderate arch support, a deep heel cup, and roomy toe box from the first wear, without requiring a break-in period for the orthotic features.

birkenstock.comHowever, the large buckle can press against the foot's flex point and cause blisters during the early break-in period.
The big buckle is at the part of my foot that needs to bend and flex and got in the way. I got wicked blisters under that strap for awhile in that spot.
u/pppowkanggg in r/BirkenstocksDespite this blister risk, the EVA construction avoids the stiff, painful break-in associated with patent leather; the nubuck leather version still requires a break-in period before becoming comfortable for a full night out.
This year I bought the black leather Nubuck with large buckles and while I’ve had to break them in (unlike the red high gloss) they are now almost at the stage of being able to wear for a full night out.
u/LegitimateCoffee9312 in r/Birkenstocks- Comfort
Buyers report instability from single strap and mixed long-walk comfort; no soft footbed option.
Why this is supported
The EVA sole is softer than cork-and-rubber, so heel drag appears more quickly, especially because the single-strap design can encourage dragging your feet to keep the sandal on.

Width: Medium/Narrow
birkenstock.comLong-walk comfort is polarizing: some wear them for miles with no issues, while others find slippage and instability make long walks unpleasant. Additionally, the Madrid EVA only comes with a standard firmness footbed—no soft footbed option is available.
Love my Madrids and I’ve walked miles in them with no issues.
u/KFlan113 in r/BirkenstocksOpinions vary: some wear them for miles without issues, while others find them unsuitable due to slippage and lack of stability.
Are they suitable for walking long distances or standing all day?Madrids do not come with a soft footbed option, so they are firmer and take longer to mold to your foot.
gotcha- Stability
Buyers report foot-dragging and faster heel wear vs double-strap models.
Why this is supported
The Madrid's single-strap design encourages a foot-dragging gait to keep the sandal in place —
because of just the one strap I find myself dragging my feet to keep them on

- Wet traction
EVA sole becomes notably slippery on wet surfaces like pool tiles.
Why this is supported
The smooth EVA sole becomes particularly slippery when wet, as one user noted:

- Heritage
The Madrid EVA retains the contoured footbed and silhouette of the original 1963 sandal.
Why this is supported
The Madrid was Birkenstock's first sandal, launched in 1963 with a footbed inspired by a healthy footprint in wet sand. It was originally marketed to doctors and healthcare workers.

- Narrow fit
Offered in narrow width that matches cork Madrid sizing, preventing sloshing unlike Crocs.
Why this is supported

Comfort and style trade-offs of Birkenstock Madrid
I have a pair of Birkenstock Madrid’s and I love how comfortable they are. I think they’re actually like the perfect level of support and firmness for my feet. I wear them around the house because being barefoot can make my feet sore. They’re also my preferred shoe for goin on walks. My problem is that even though I bought a fun pair of them they’re just not totally my style for daily wear to work. So ideally I would love to find something with a similar footbed to the birks but a more dressy and colorful style, bonus if it has a slight heel or platform.

Break-in challenges with patent leather and big buckle Madrid
However - like many others I fell in love with and coveted the large buckle so last year bought them in tomato red high gloss and still can only wear for 20 mins at a time and would not risk wearing for a night out. Never one to give up (tenacity or stubbornness) - This year I bought the black leather Nubuck with large buckles and while I’ve had to break them in (unlike the red high gloss) they are now almost at the stage of being able to wear for a full night out.

Mixed experiences with Madrid big buckle break-in and blisters
I have Madrid big buckle and I love them. But they took ages to break in and were uncomfortable for ages. The big buckle is at the part of my foot that needs to bend and flex and got in the way. I got wicked blisters under that strap for awhile in that spot. The smooth leather footbed also caused friction blisters. But now that they are broken in, I loooove them.

Durability and walking issues with Madrid big buckle for daily use
I have worn them nearly everyday since. They fit comfortably like a birk, but because of just the one strap I find myself dragging my feet to keep them on as I go for pram walks. Because of this the sole of the shoe was worn down quicker than the Arizona sandal, and now at a year at my heel it’s completely worn through. I still wear them for walking down and they feel fine. I would still probably buy again because I think they look nicer than Arizonas and they look much nicer with dresses etc.
