Madrid Big Buckle Sandals Women
The Birkenstock Madrid Big Buckle is a women's slide sandal featuring a single adjustable genuine leather strap with a large metal buckle, a cork footbed with a leather top cover, and a flexible, durable, non-skid EVA outsole. It is made in Germany and available in a medium/narrow fit. User reviews indicate the straps can be stiff during break-in, the single-strap design may cause floppiness, and the sole may wear more quickly, but the sandal is often chosen for its dressy, stylish look.

Product Insights
The Madrid Big Buckle Sandals transform Birkenstock's 1963 fitness-sandal heritage into a runway icon with an oversized buckle, but the single-strap design forces toe-gripping that trains muscles while causing a painful break-in, foot fatigue, and accelerated sole wear from a dragging gait; sizing down and tightest buckle reduce floppiness but add pressure points, and the oiled leather develops a darkening patina that can be hand-buffed or conditioned.
Verified claims
- Origin
- 1963 fitness-sandal heritage: cork footbed and toe-grip strap; now with oversized buckle for runway wear.
- Fit
- Buyers report floppiness with the single-strap design and advise sizing down for a better fit.
- Material
- Oiled leather upper, cork footbed, and EVA outsole: leather develops patina and scratches can be massaged out; EVA sole is replaceable.
- Break-in
- Buyers report a painful break-in with blisters, pressure points, and foot fatigue, often requiring DIY fixes.
- Sizing
- Buyers recommend sizing down from your usual Birkenstock size to reduce slippage.
- Outsole wear
- The EVA sole can wear through to cork within a year due to foot-dragging.
- Muscle conditioning
- The single-strap design trains foot and calf muscles with each step.
- Width
- Medium/narrow width fits broader than expected.
- Strap
- Stiff strap requires break-in and often needs tightest buckle.
- Durability
- Accelerated sole wear from a dragging gait caused by the single-strap design.
- Use case
- The oversized buckle elevates style but reduces comfort for everyday walking.
- Flopping
- Single-strap forces toe gripping, leading to foot fatigue and faster sole wear.
- Design heritage
- Toe-gripping is an intentional 1963 muscle-training design, not a flaw.
- Flop mitigation
- Sizing down, tight tension, and narrow width reduce flop despite harsh break-in from stiff leather.
- Patina
- Oiled leather has natural color variation and develops an uneven patina that darkens.
- Scratch removal
- Surface scratches and stains can be rubbed away with the ball of the hand.
- Conditioner darkening
- Conditioner temporarily darkens the leather while removing scuffs.
- Sole wear
- Heel sole wears through to the cork within a year of daily wear.
- Repair
- Resoling is possible but cost-effective only if cork is intact.
- Style tradeoff
- Dressier appearance comes at the cost of accelerated sole wear.
- Buckle pressure point
- Buyers report the large buckle creates a pressure point on the top of the foot.
- Pressure relief
- Buyers recommend moleskin, filing, or loosening to relieve buckle pressure.
- Style positioning
- Fashion evolution from fitness sandal to runway icon with capsule collection.
- Styling versatility
- Worn from coffee runs to dinner dates and featured on runways
- Toe grip exercise
- Toe-gripping reflex from strap exercises feet and calves each step
- Foot fatigue
- Buyers report initial foot fatigue that resolves as muscles strengthen
- Care
- Hand buffing removes scratches; conditioner temporarily darkens to hide scuffs.

Stiff edges and filing tip for big buckle Madrid
I just got a pair of the leather big buckle madrids. So stiff and uncomfortable at the edges of the straps. I used a 180 grit emery board to the underside edges to soften them up a bit. Works great

Big buckle as dressy sandal, less comfortable
I don’t care for the big buckle as much as the regular - I have two of them but they’re not as comfortable - I treat them as dressy sandals and keep them nice looking

Flop, sole wear, and style preference over Arizona
I originally had Arizonas for years like you, but I liked the look of the Madrid big buckle and got them a year ago. I have worn them nearly everyday since. They fit comfortably like a birk, but because of just the one strap I find myself dragging my feet to keep them on as I go for pram walks. Because of this the sole of the shoe was worn down quicker than the Arizona sandal, and now at a year at my heel it’s completely worn through. I still wear them for walking down and they feel fine. I would still probably buy again because I think they look nicer than Arizonas and they look much nicer with dresses etc.
