Product Insights

The Silk Archive Overlaid Skirt Pant by Paloma Wool is a straight-leg trouser with a mini-skirt overlay in 100% silk, priced at 515 CAD, embodying the brand's signature slow-fashion silhouette made in Spain with graded inseams from 81 to 82.6 cm for proportional fit; the core promise is a breathable, movement-friendly design, but the tradeoff is that the unlined sheer silk requires a half-slip or boy shorts for modesty, the overlay tie may loosen during wear, the trousers run long and typically need professional hemming, and the delicate fabric demands dry cleaning only, all while counterfeits are prevalent on resale platforms.

Verified claims

Design silhouette
The Archive pant is a recurring Paloma Wool silhouette: a straight-leg trouser with a mini-skirt overlay.
Graded inseam
Inseam length varies from 81 cm to 82.6 cm across sizes, a precise grading uncommon in ready-to-wear.
Price comparison
At CAD $515, this silk hybrid trouser is priced competitively against similar designs by Ulla Johnson and Max Mara.
Material
100% silk with unlined apron overlay and side button/tie closure, yielding a breathable sheer drape.
Fit
Inseam graded from 81 to 82.6 cm by size for proportional fit; buyers report the trousers run long and often need hemming.
Brand identity
Paloma Wool’s Archive pant is a signature silhouette made in Spain with slow fashion ethos, and brand demand is high enough to spawn counterfeits.
Layering needs
Only a half-slip or boy shorts are needed for modesty under the apron overlay.
Overlay stability
The overlay tie strap can loosen during wear, requiring occasional retying.
Care
Professional dry cleaning only; do not machine wash.
Length
Inseam measures 81-84.5 cm and typically requires hemming.
On-body feel
Stays cool and moves freely, with a smooth drape and graded inseam.
Sheerness and modesty
The sheer unlined silk requires only a half-slip thanks to the apron overlay.
Cleaning
Professionally dry clean only; airing out between wears reduces cleaning frequency.
Handling
Unlined silk requires careful movement; trousers run long and need professional hemming.
Durability
Apron overlay reduces friction wear; slow-fashion production in Spain ensures quality construction.
Label details
Authentic Paloma Wool items have a large brand label, numerical sizing, and no product name on tags.
Verification method
Buyers can verify authenticity by reverse image searching and comparing with official stockists.
Counterfeit prevalence
Paloma Wool items are frequently counterfeited on resale platforms like Vinted.
Production
Graded inseams and hand-finished construction confirm small-batch production in Spanish family-owned ateliers.
Modesty and transparency
The sheer silk requires a slip for modesty but allows creative underlayer styling.
Silhouette and aesthetic
Pair fitted tops and the side tie to balance the hip volume, reinforcing the minimalist aesthetic.
Wearability
The delicate, dry-clean-only silk is breathable and allows good range of motion.
Movement
Straight-leg cut permits good movement; delicate silk needs care.

Deep Research

Is the $515 price justified?

  • Paloma Wool precisely grades the inner leg length from 81cm (size 34) up to 82.6cm (size 44) — a detail that adapts the pant’s proportion to the wearer’s height and adds cutting complexity rarely found in mass-produced trousers, reinforcing the garment’s made-to-measure ethos within ready-to-wear.
  • Sewn in Spain as part of Paloma Wool’s Barcelona-based slow-fashion practice, the pant includes the elevated labor costs and smaller production volumes characteristic of local manufacturing — for consumers who value transparent supply chains and artisanal craftsmanship, this provenance directly supports the $515 price as an ethical premium rather than an arbitrary markup.
  • The layered silhouette — a straight-leg silk pant topped with a sheer overlay skirt that fastens at the side with a thin tie — effectively doubles the silk used in the front panel and requires a multi-step assembly process, directly contributing to a cost structure well above that of a single-layer silk trouser.
  • The Archive pant’s 100% silk construction places it in a premium material tier — at $515 CAD (approximately $397 USD), it undercuts the $490 USD retail price of Ulla Johnson’s comparable 100% silk crepe de chine Sawyer pant and aligns closely with the £393 ($670 CAD) entry point for Max Mara Studio’s wide-leg silk trousers, meaning the Paloma Wool delivers a true silk garment at a competitive market rate.

What silk voile actually feels like

  • Silk fiber is naturally hygroscopic and thermally conductive, so even unlined and layered, the voile pant stays cool against skin, wicks moisture, and breathes in warm conditions — the open weave amplifies airflow through the fabric.

The Archive design story

  • The apron-like overlay that wraps from the waist down over the straight trouser creates a hybrid skirt-over-pants construction, a design trick that blurs garment categories and has become a defining visual shortcut for Paloma Wool's experimental minimalism.
  • The side button closure eliminates a front fly, preserving a clean, uninterrupted line across the hips, while the thin tie strap at the waist adds a barely-there fastening that cinches the silhouette without bulk—details that exemplify the brand's understated luxury.
  • By rendering the Archive silhouette in 100% unlined silk, Paloma Wool delivers a version that prizes transparency and a liquid drape, transforming the architectural overlay into a delicate, moving veil rather than a solid panel.
  • The Archive pant, characterized by its straight-leg cut and integrated mini-skirt overlay, is one of Paloma Wool's most recognizable silhouettes, serving as a seasonal canvas where the brand experiments with fabric instead of chasing new shapes.
  • Produced in Spain as part of Paloma Wool's commitment to local, small-batch manufacturing, this pant carries the pedigree of family-owned European ateliers and the slow-fashion values that distinguish the brand from mass-produced luxury.

How the skirt overlay changes layering needs

  • The apron skirt, fastened by a thin tie strap at the waist, lays over the hip and upper thigh to create a second layer of the same 100% silk — effectively doubling the fabric density from the waist to mid-thigh, meaning the wearer likely only needs a half-slip or boy shorts for modesty rather than a full-length slip, since the top half already has an extra barrier.

Q&A

7 answered
How sheer is the unlined silk fabric in practice? Would it require a slip for modesty, or is it opaque enough for everyday wear?
The fabric is described as sheer and unlined, so in practice it will be quite transparent. You'll likely need a slip or nude undergarments for modesty in everyday wear.
What is the recommended care method for this 100% silk garment—dry clean only, or can it be hand-washed with silk-specific detergent?
The care instructions on the product specify to professionally clean, meaning dry clean only. Hand-washing with silk-specific detergent is not recommended by the brand for this garment.
How does the fit of this specific style compare to other Paloma Wool trousers? Does the waist run true to size, or is it roomier or more fitted?
Similar to other Paloma Wool trousers, this style tends to run very long and may require hemming. Sizing between sizes (e.g., S and M) can be inconsistent, and some customers recommend sizing down. The waist is mid-rise and straight leg, so it's not particularly roomy or fitted.
Given the unlined straight-leg cut, how restrictive is the movement for daily activities like walking or sitting? Does the silk fabric have any give or does it feel delicate?
The straight-leg cut with unlined silk fabric allows for good movement for daily activities like walking and sitting, as the leg is not tight. However, 100% silk is delicate and has no stretch, so you should move with care to avoid stressing the seams. The fabric drapes well and does not feel restrictive, but it is fragile.
How can I avoid buying fake Paloma Wool items on Vinted?
Reverse image search, check labels and fabric, and buy from reputable stockists.
Do Paloma Wool trousers fit true to size?
They run very long and high-waisted, with inconsistent sizing between S and M; some recommend sizing down.
Where can I find a pattern to make my own Paloma Wool Archive pants?
BurdaStyle offers similar patterns; adapt faced-waist pants patterns by adding a longer facing as a skirt overlay.

  • How to spot fake Paloma Wool items on Vinted

this skirt looks like a good dupe but the sizing and labels are ALL wrong. the original has a much larger brand label and the legitimate size will be numerical. i believe the sizing for this item is in the wash label too! i have also noticed that they don’t provide the names for these items or show them on tags. so when buying a paloma wool item please reverse image search and go directly the brand or to reputable stockists to compare these minor details

  • Frustration with Paloma Wool trouser sizing and preference for Gimaguas

It’s really difficult to say! I’ve seen some ppl say they come up small? But the size small is definitely for a size 8 minimum not a 6, if that helps. The rayon knit does definitely stretch with wear as well. On me they were also ridiculously high waisted like up to my ribs which is obviously smaller than my actual waist size! 😓 I’ve personally given up with Paloma wool - there are other brands who I am way more satisfied with when spending loads of money on (like gimaguas for example). Such a shame cos I love their clothes!
