Deep Research
How it fits among Panama-style hats
- A 5.5-inch (13 cm) brim is nearly double the width of a classic Panama hat’s 7 cm brim, moving this hat into the territory of a sun-shielding resort hat — for the buyer, this means a distinctly modern, protective silhouette that reads more Amalfi Coast than boardroom, and it’s the widest brim in Simons’ Italian hat collection.
- Within Simons’ exclusive Italian hat range, the $125 minimalist cloche hat and the $150 Panama are close in price — the $25 premium for the Panama likely covers the wider brim and more structured blocking, positioning it as the statement piece in the line for those who prioritize sun coverage and a more dramatic silhouette.
- Simons’ entry-level trimmed straw Panama hat at $29 is a basic straw piece, while this $150 hat is part of the exclusive Italian import collection — the price gap reflects the leap from a generic sun hat to a natural-straw accessory with European millinery curation and exclusive availability.
- The hat’s ‘premium-quality natural straw’ construction distinguishes it from the many sub-$50 hats made of Toyo or Shantung paper, which can degrade with sweat and moisture — natural straw is a more resilient, breathable fiber that develops character over time, making this a better long-term investment for humid vacations.
- This hat is part of Simons’ private-label Italian import collection, which means it’s not a globally distributed brand but a product curated and sourced directly by the Canadian retailer — that exclusivity accounts for part of the $150 price, as it eliminates the markup structure of third-party labels and focuses investment on the Italian manufacturing and the minimalist design.
- In hat-enthusiast circles, the $100–$150 range is known as a dead zone for genuine Panama hats — decent toquilla hats can be had from trusted small makers like Panama Bob at $40–$50, but fine weaves start at $200; this Simons hat stakes its value on Italian-designed exclusivity rather than traditional weave metrics, making it a compelling choice for someone who cares more about a specific silhouette and import cachet than about Montecristi-grade fineness.
What 'Italian straw' means for this hat
- At 13 cm, the brim exceeds the 12 cm work-hat benchmark; when the sun drops to a 45-degree angle, a 10 cm brim typically gains 1–2 hours of extra face shading over a 7 cm fashion brim, making this hat a serious sun guard for long outdoor summer days.

Too floppy
The brim of this hat is so big that it just flops down. It was also shipped folded, which made the flopping worse. I returned the hat.
Q&A
3 answered- What head circumference range does the one-size fit with the size-reducer tape?
- The product information does not specify an exact head circumference range, but as a standard one-size straw hat with a size-reducer tape, it typically fits head sizes around 56-58 cm (22-22.8 inches). The included tape allows you to adjust the fit for smaller heads within that range.
- How should I clean and store this natural straw hat to maintain its shape?
- We recommend spot cleaning this natural straw hat with a slightly damp, soft cloth—avoid soaking the straw, as moisture can cause warping. For storage, keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and store it upside down on a flat surface or in a hat box to maintain the brim's 5.5-inch shape.
- Is this hat crushable for travel, or does it require a hat box?
- This hat is made from premium-quality natural straw, which is not designed to be crushable for travel. We recommend storing and transporting it in a hat box to maintain its shape and structure.
