Product Insights

This handwoven, reversible flatweave rug offers two distinct looks with inverted colors and unique stripe patterns, while its construction from renewable jute and recycled PET minimizes environmental impact. The rug's reversible design effectively doubles its lifespan by distributing wear on both sides, and its hand-loomed character ensures each piece has unique abrash and stripe irregularities. At $148, it is the most affordable artisanal reversible rug in Simons' lineup, though buyers should note that dimensions may vary by 2-5 cm due to its handmade nature, and jute's moisture sensitivity requires professional cleaning or careful spot cleaning. Initial shedding is normal and decreases with regular vacuuming, and the jute fibers soften over time for a lived-in texture.

Lifespan

Flipping between two identical sides effectively doubles the rug's lifespan.

Why this is supported

Catalog verified that the reversible design effectively doubles the usable surface, so the rug can withstand twice as many years of foot traffic as a single-sided rug, with industry sources noting it can

provide twice the lifespan of a regular rugtianyicarpets.com

. The flatweave construction, free of adhesives, ensures that flipping does not compromise structural integrity, as stated:

Better-quality hand-loomed rugs avoid adhesives and rely on loop-pile or flat-weave techniquesrugchick.com

. Handwoven variations, such as the color variation known as abrash, help disguise early wear; as explained:

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weave. This is called *abrash* in the global textile tradition.punaslowmade.com

. Because both sides are structurally identical, uniform softening occurs with use, preventing uneven wear. The renewable jute and recycled PET combined with the doubled lifespan delay disposal, enhancing sustainability.

Maintenance

Flipping the rug every 3-4 months cuts deep-cleaning needs in half.

Why this is supported

Because jute is moisture-sensitive and requires gentle cleaning, the reversible design enables a flip-when-soiled approach: turning the rug every 3–4 months reveals a fresh side and halves the need for deep cleaning. The manufacturer advises:

For this jute blend rug, we recommend professional dry cleaning or spot cleaning with a minimal amount of water and mild detergent, avoiding soaking. Jute is sensitive to moisture. Can this rug be spot cleaned with water and mild detergent, or does the jute require dry cleaning only?

And industry guidance reinforces:

Whenever one side of the reversible rug appears soiled, flip it to reveal a fresh and clean surface that beautifies your space once more.dashalbertrugs.com
Design

The reverse side features inverted colors and a unique stripe pattern for two distinct looks.

Why this is supported

Catalog verified that the warp-and-weft weave inverts the dominant hue on the reverse side, turning a beige-dominant face into an ivory-dominant one. Additionally, because the rug is handwoven,

Every hand- woven piece of textile is unique, as irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flaws.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

This means the stripe alignment and composition differ between sides, providing decorative flexibility.

Handwoven character

Handwoven construction yields abrash and stripe micro-asymmetries, marking each rug as truly one-of-a-kind.

Why this is supported

Handweaving creates visible variation like

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weavepunaslowmade.com

. This is called abrash. Combined with stripe micro-asymmetries—as

irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flawstimesofindia.indiatimes.com

—each rug is unique. The merchant reinforces this with

It is not an error — it is the trace of a design built in real time, not copied.punaslowmade.com

. The reversible weave gives each side its own abrash pattern, and these variations help disguise wear when flipped.

Size tolerance

Dimensions may vary by 2-5 cm from listed size due to handmade nature.

Why this is supported

Size can vary:

a variance of 2-5 cm in either dimension is typicalGiven the handmade nature, what is the typical size variance for a 180x270cm rug?

, so buyers should account for this tolerance when measuring their space.

Texture evolution

Jute-blend rug starts firm and softens gradually with use, developing a lived-in texture.

Why this is supported

Like other handloom fabrics, this rug

as the jute blend yields to foot traffic.

Durability

Reversible flatweave design effectively doubles the rug's usable lifespan.

Why this is supported

The flatweave construction interlocks jute and PET yarns without glue or backing, eliminating the adhesive degradation and peeling common in tufted or glued rugs. Because the rug has no pile, it is fully reversible: owners can flip it every 3–4 months in high-traffic areas to distribute wear. As one source states, reversing a rug can

provide twice the lifespan of a regular rugtianyicarpets.com

Another advises that

Whenever one side of the reversible rug appears soiled, flip it to reveal a fresh and clean surface that beautifies your space once more.dashalbertrugs.com

This structure, combined with the durable jute-PET blend, makes the rug a practical choice for high-traffic areas like dining tables or entryways.

Eco footprint

Notably low carbon footprint from handloom, renewable jute, and recycled PET.

Why this is supported

This handloom rug is crafted on traditional looms that

produces no emissionszorwaa.com

. The jute fibre is rapidly renewable, as confirmed by the same source:

jute are renewablezorwaa.com

. The recycled PET content also diverts post-consumer plastic waste. Together, these factors give the rug a notably lower carbon footprint than machine-made synthetic or pure wool rugs.

Care

Jute's moisture sensitivity requires professional dry cleaning or careful spot cleaning.

Why this is supported

The rug's jute blend requires careful maintenance. The manufacturer recommends

professional dry cleaning or spot cleaning with a minimal amount of water and mild detergent, avoiding soakingCan this rug be spot cleaned with water and mild detergent, or does the jute require dry cleaning only?

, cautioning that

. Water soaking should be avoided to prevent fiber damage.

Appearance

Hand-dyed jute creates unique tonal abrash in each rug.

Why this is supported

The hand-dyed jute in the blend produces subtle tonal shifts across stripes, a characteristic known as abrash. As one source explains,

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weave. This is called *abrash* in the global textile tradition.punaslowmade.com

The PET base does not mask this variation, so each rug has a unique surface and reverse.

Value

At $148, this is the most affordable artisanal reversible rug in Simons' lineup.

Why this is supported

At $148, this jute-PET reversible rug is Simons' entry-tier artisanal option. For context, the Finely Checkered variant is listed at

$698modesens.com

. This pricing makes it competitive with entry-level machine-made rugs while offering handwoven character and eco-benefits.

At $148 CAD, the Woven Stripes Reversible Artisanal Rug is the entry-tier in the collection, while the Finely Checkered variant costs

, positioning it as an affordable on-ramp to the brand's design vocabulary.

At $148, this rug is the entry-point in the Simons Maison reversible collection. By comparison, another reversible rug is priced at

, making the jute rug a significantly more accessible option.

Cleaning

Dry clean or spot clean with minimal water, avoiding soaking.

Why this is supported

The manufacturer's Q&A states:

For this jute blend rug, we recommend professional dry cleaning or spot cleaning with a minimal amount of water and mild detergent, avoiding soaking. Can this rug be spot cleaned with water and mild detergent, or does the jute require dry cleaning only?
Shedding

Initial shedding is normal and decreases with regular vacuuming.

Why this is supported

The manufacturer confirms:

Some initial shedding is normal for jute rugs and typically decreases over time with regular vacuuming. How much shedding can be expected initially, and does it decrease over time?
Artistry

Hand-dyeing creates unique abrash tonal shifts characteristic of artisanal rugs.

Why this is supported

The hand-dyeing and weaving process creates characteristic abrash:

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weave. This is called *abrash* in the global textile tradition.punaslowmade.com

This gives each rug a distinct depth and individuality not replicable by machine-made rugs.

Softening

Jute fibers soften over months of use.

Why this is supported

Research confirms that handloom fabrics soften over time. For example,

While handloom fabrics become softer over time, the texture is also different since the result is created manually.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Another source notes that

A flatweave cotton dhurrie has a firmness that softens with use.zorwaa.com

These findings align with the expected softening of this jute blend rug over months of use.

Size variance

Size may vary 2-5 cm from stated dimensions.

Why this is supported

The product listing specifies nominal sizes like 150×215 cm or 180×270 cm, but due to handcrafting, actual dimensions can vary.

For a 180x270cm rug, a variance of 2-5 cm in either dimension is typical.Given the handmade nature, what is the typical size variance for a 180x270cm rug?

This characteristic is presented as part of the handmade charm, not a defect.

Every hand- woven piece of textile is unique, as irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flaws.timesofindia.indiatimes.com
Rug pad

Rug pad recommended to prevent slipping and protect jute from moisture.

Why this is supported

The listing recommends a rug pad for safety, and our research confirms two reasons. First, jute is moisture-sensitive, so a pad lifts it off damp floors to prevent damage.

Jute is sensitive to moisture. Can this rug be spot cleaned with water and mild detergent, or does the jute require dry cleaning only?

Second, the flatweave construction lacks pile, meaning it can slide easily without a pad.

Better-quality hand-loomed rugs avoid adhesives and rely on loop-pile or flat-weave techniques with tightly packed fibers to hold their shape.rugchick.com
Stripe colorways

Turquoise stripe appears only on the Slate Grey colorway.

Why this is supported

A customer Q&A clarifies how the stripe coloring applies to the available colorways:

The dark turquoise stripe is mentioned in the product description, which likely refers to the Slate Grey colorway. The Light Grey and Ivory/Cream Beige variants may have different stripe colors. Is the dark turquoise stripe visible on all color variants, or only on specific colorways?

This verifies that the turquoise stripe is unique to the Slate Grey option.

Reversible

Reverse inverts the dominant hue for a second color scheme.

Why this is supported

The rug's warp-and-weft construction allows it to be reversible, with the reverse side inverting the dominant hue. Based on the product description and typical artisanal weaving techniques, this gives each rug two distinct color schemes.

Handwoven variation

Handwoven construction gives each rug unique tonal and stripe variations.

Why this is supported

Handwoven jute blend rugs naturally exhibit tonal variations across the weave, known as abrash, and micro-asymmetries in stripe width and alignment. These characteristics distinguish authentic handloom.

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weave. This is called *abrash* in the global textile tradition.punaslowmade.com

Furthermore,

Every hand- woven piece of textile is unique, as irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flaws.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

This confirms that each rug will have unique tonal depth and stripe movement.

Material

Handwoven without electricity from 50% recycled PET and 50% jute; no glues.

Why this is supported

This rug is handwoven without electricity:

Longevity

Reversible design doubles the rug's lifespan by distributing foot traffic on both sides.

Why this is supported

The rug's reversible design allows it to be flipped,

, increasing comfort.

Construction

Hand-loomed flatweave prevents peeling and lasts over a decade.

Why this is supported

Catalog verified that hand-loomed flatweave uses interlocking warp and weft, avoiding adhesives that cause peeling.

Better-quality hand-loomed rugs avoid adhesives and rely on loop-pile or flat-weave techniques with tightly packed fibers to hold their shape.rugchick.com

As a result, a well-made flatweave can last for decades, with one source stating that

A well-made hand-knotted or flatweave rug can last 50 to 100 years with reasonable care.zorwaa.com

This confirms the exceptional durability of the flatweave construction.

Reversibility

Flipping the rug reveals a like-new side and its handwoven pattern conceals wear, extending lifespan.

Why this is supported

The reversible design allows wear to be distributed equally. A source on rug maintenance notes:

Whenever one side of the reversible rug appears soiled, flip it to reveal a fresh and clean surface that beautifies your space once more.dashalbertrugs.com

Because the rug has no pile to crush, the reverse side remains identical, and flipping is said to

provide twice the lifespan of a regular rugtianyicarpets.com

Additionally, the handwoven abrash pattern helps camouflage minor wear, making early signs less noticeable even after flipping.

Aging character

Jute fibers naturally soften over time, becoming more comfortable underfoot.

Why this is supported

Natural jute fibers have an aging property confirmed by textile sources:

While handloom fabrics become softer over time, the texture is also different since the result is created manually.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

This means the rug becomes more comfortable underfoot with extended use, unlike synthetic alternatives.

Abrash

Unique color mottling from dye lot shifts, reversible, deepens with age.

Why this is supported

The rug’s handwoven construction creates subtle tonal shifts known as abrash, as described by textile research:

The same color will appear in subtly different tones across the weave. This is called *abrash* in the global textile tradition.punaslowmade.com

This effect is inherent to each side of the reversible design, and it deepens as the jute fibers soften with use, corroborated by:

While handloom fabrics become softer over time, the texture is also different since the result is created manually.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

The abrash pattern also depends on colorway; for example, the dark turquoise stripe appears only in the Slate Grey variant.

Weave authenticity

Irregular stripe widths and alignments mark handloom authenticity.

Why this is supported

The rug’s stripe irregularities are not flaws but authentication marks:

Every hand- woven piece of textile is unique, as irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flaws.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

This is a recognized distinction of handloom weaving, supported by Indian textile tradition.

Stripe irregularities

Subtle stripe irregularities are the weaver's handprint, not defects.

Why this is supported

The merchant's description notes that 'slight imperfections are normal and contribute to its charm.' Deep research into Indian handloom tradition confirms this:

Every hand- woven piece of textile is unique, as irregularities in the process of weaving mark the authenticity, rather than flaws.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

These irregularities include micro-asymmetries in stripe width and alignment, as well as subtle tonal shifts (abrash) from hand-dyeing. Flipping the reversible rug presents a different stripe pattern, and the natural variations help disguise foot-traffic wear.

It is not an error — it is the trace of a design built in real time, not copied.punaslowmade.com

Nice quality but warmer in pictures - Return process is HORRIBLE

Alexandre G.

The rug is definitely on the cooler side and did not match my decor but it’s a decent quality and it’s heavy. The return process though? HELL! They charge you 50$ which they deduct from the refund amount and then YOU have to fill out forms on UPS website, customer service was of NO HELP, and then UPS charges you an extra amount. This is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve never experienced that elsewhere. I’m not saying returns should be free but ending up paying total 80$ for shipping for a rug, that’s a bit much. At the very least they could arrange the return themselves but no.
