Product Insights
Smartwool Striped Merino Wool Socks prioritize comfort and odor resistance over durability, as they are softer but lose shape faster and have a shorter warranty than Darn Tough, making them ideal for multi-day wear but a tradeoff for longevity.

Smartwool socks comfortable but developed hole quickly
I was happy when I bought this pair, it was super comfortable, maybe even more comfortable than Darn Tough. But certainly not high quality. I wore them twice, washed once, then after the third wear saw this hole.

Smartwool stretches out compared to Darn Tough
I've tried both and can't recommend Darn Tough more highly. Smartwool has some designs I like ok but they get all loose and stretched out after wearing them for the day.

Smartwool outlasted Darn Tough for this user
I’ve had the opposite results. Every single pair of Darn Tough I’ve owned has failed in exactly the same places just behind the ball of my foot. I rotate evenly between those and SmartWool and have gone through three pair of Darn Tough while the SmartWool show little sign of wear.

Smartwool running socks are the only socks for running
Smartwool running socks are the only socks I wear for running. I don’t use the cold weather version, I’ve been totally fine in the regular ones (and I went out in 8 degrees F recently). I do find that they run true to size.

Smartwool preferred over Darn Tough for odor control
I strongly prefer smart wool over darn tough. For whatever reason my darn tough stink at the end of the day just like cotton socks, meanwhile my smart wool can be worn for several days before starting to smell (they’ve gotten a lot of wear on various vacations).
