Product Insights

The Roger Advantage, a streetwear sneaker co-created by On co-owner Roger Federer, is the bestselling model in his line, offering improved padding and comfort over its predecessor but weighing 335g—135g heavier than a Stan Smith—and delivering a firmer, planted ride via lateral-stability-tuned CloudTec and Speedboard. Its vegan synthetic leather upper creases and doesn't stretch, so sizing up half a size is recommended for the narrow toe box. While more cushioned than a Stan Smith, it is less plush than walking shoes, suitable for moderate walks but not heavy walking; all-day comfort is firm and stable. The chunky sole gives a contemporary look, and the shoe works for both casual and dressed-up styles, though it may squeak (especially when wet) and requires a break-in period for optimal fit.

Deep Research

Caring for faux leather and how it wears over time

  • Because synthetic leathers lack the natural emollients of animal hide, applying a vegan-specific conditioner or a light plant-based oil like coconut twice a year re-suppleness the material and slows the linear creasing that the Roger Advantage typically develops across the toe flex zone, keeping the shoe looking newer longer.
  • Exposing the shoes to direct heat — from radiators, tumble dryers, or strong sunlight — breaks down the polyurethane coating on the faux leather and weakens the shoe’s adhesives, so post-clean drying must be done at room temperature with absorbent paper stuffing to wick moisture and preserve the upper’s structural integrity.
  • When not in use, storing the Advantage with cedar shoe trees and out of direct light prevents toe-box collapse and premature creasing, while also shielding the vegan leather from UV rays that accelerate colour fading and material brittleness — a practical habit that extends the shoe’s visual lifespan.
  • For scuffs or marks that don’t lift with a damp cloth, a soft paste of baking soda and water — applied gently and wiped off after a few minutes — effectively lifts stains without the aggressive abrasion that can wear through the matte coating; for the most stubborn scuffs, a lightly moistened magic eraser can be used with caution to avoid dulling the finish.
  • The matte faux-leather surface is best maintained by wiping it down with a barely-damp microfiber cloth and a mild, dye-free soap — abrasive brushes or harsh chemicals can scuff the finish and initiate peeling, so sticking to a gentle, detergent-light clean preserves the uniform matte appearance through months of casual wear.

Fit profile compared to other popular sneakers

  • On specs a 6mm heel-to-toe drop for The Roger Advantage — a midpoint between the flat soles of traditional tennis shoes and the higher drops of cushioned runners — so the foot sits slightly heel-elevated, which can reduce strain on the Achilles compared to a zero-drop court shoe while still keeping the foot closer to the ground than a typical running shoe.
  • Two reviewers used the adidas Stan Smith as a baseline: Dappered's writer found the Roger Advantage true-to-size in a US10, while FASCINATE's staff recommend a half-size up from their usual Stan Smith size — so the correct size may depend on personal tolerance for a snug forefoot fit, but both agree the shoe runs at least as snug as a Stan Smith in the same numeric size.
  • The Advantage has a slightly wider ankle collar than On's own Centre Court model, making it easier to slip on and off without sacrificing the premium feel — a practical design note if you plan to use these as a grab-and-go daily sneaker.
  • The faux-leather upper will soften but not stretch, so if the toe box pinches out of the box, exchanging for a larger size is the only fix; this makes the half-size-up recommendation a safer default for anyone between sizes or with a slightly wide forefoot.
  • Despite the narrow toe box, the midfoot and heel sit on a wide, flat sole with noticeable arch support, giving a stable, athletic feel that one reviewer described as 'locked in' without squeezing — a fit characteristic that sets it apart from flatter, less structured casual sneakers.

The Roger Federer design collaboration story

  • Federer's stated desire for a tennis shoe that could also be worn on the street directly shaped the Advantage's dual identity as a tennis-inspired lifestyle sneaker with clean, minimalist lines suitable for daily wear.
  • Roger Federer is a co-owner of On, having joined as an entrepreneur in 2019 with an equity stake rather than a standard endorsement deal, meaning his involvement in the Advantage's design reflects genuine product co-creation rather than a royalty-collecting sponsorship.
  • The Roger Advantage is explicitly labeled a bestseller on On's own site, confirming it as the most popular model in a line that includes the $220 Centre Court and Pro 3, making it the go-to entry point into Federer's tennis-inspired aesthetic.

How CloudTec and Speedboard feel in a casual shoe

  • A Speedboard plate — a structural component borrowed from On’s performance running line — is embedded in the midsole to create a firm, stable ride; rather than delivering the bouncy energy return of a running shoe, it gives the Roger Advantage the locked-in, supportive feel of a classic court sneaker.
  • Because the Roger Advantage belongs to the Federer-inspired Roger lineup and draws on tennis-shoe traditions instead of On’s running heritage, its hidden CloudTec is tuned for lateral stability and board-feel responsiveness — ideal for crisp, clean styling and short-haul city wear, less so for deep-cushion all-day trekking.

How it compares to other court-style sneakers

  • Weighing 335 grams per shoe, the Advantage is 135 grams heavier than the 200-gram Stan Smith — the extra mass is concentrated in the thick sole and cushioning package, giving it a planted, substantial underfoot feel rather than the featherlight, court-friendly agility of its classic rival.
  • A moulded TPU heel clip adds rearfoot stability and durability to the Advantage, a structural element not found on the Stan Smith's traditional stitched construction, signaling a more engineered, modern approach to sneaker support.
  • The Advantage’s thick sole — a design choice explicitly for style and comfort — creates a chunky, fashion-forward stance that departs from the low-profile, slim silhouette of the Stan Smith, aligning more with contemporary sneaker trends and providing a bolder visual anchor in outfits.
  • The Advantage's matte faux-leather upper — vegan and animal-free — distinguishes it from the Stan Smith's full-grain leather construction, appealing to buyers who want the tennis-inspired look without animal materials, while offering a uniform out-of-the-box finish that won't break in like leather.
  • The Roger Advantage is an active collaboration with Roger Federer, who partnered with On in 2020 to design footwear that reflects his playing style and aesthetic — unlike the Stan Smith, whose namesake is a retired 1970s champion and the shoe’s design predates his involvement, making the Advantage a living, evolving project tied to a current tennis icon.
  • The Advantage layers Helion superfoam and a TPU-injected Speedboard over concealed CloudTec, delivering a soft, responsive ride that reduces muscle fatigue — a marked step up from the Stan Smith's single-density EVA midsole, which prioritizes lightweight court feel over all-day plushness.

Q&A

7 answered
How does the faux leather upper hold up over time in terms of creasing and durability?
The faux leather upper is noted by some users to develop creasing over time, which is a common concern with vegan leather materials. Durability is considered average for casual wear, but the creasing does not affect functionality.
Does the CloudTec technology provide noticeable cushioning for all-day standing or walking?
Yes, the CloudTec technology is designed to reduce muscle fatigue and provide cushioning, giving a sensation of walking on clouds. However, some users find that dedicated walking or running shoes offer better cushioning for extended standing or walking.
What is the recommended sizing adjustment for wide feet given the tight toe box?
For wide feet or if you experience a tight toe box, we recommend going half a size up. The toe box is known to be narrow, and sizing up provides more room without compromising fit in other areas.
Is the squeaking issue specific to wet conditions or does it occur when dry as well?
The squeaking issue is most commonly reported when the shoes are wet, but some users have also noted squeaking in dry conditions. It is not limited to wet conditions, though it is more pronounced when wet.
Are they comfortable for long walks?
Some users comfortably walk 20-30km, while others experience discomfort and recommend running shoes for extended walking.
How do they fit?
Generally true to size, but the toe box is narrow, so consider half a size up.
Do they squeak?
The Advantage can squeak when wet; the Clubhouse model is particularly known for squeaking.

  • Comfort and fit comparison with Stan Smiths

I’ve found the On Roger Advantage to be more comfortable than the regular Stan Smiths. Both are vegan leather, and I’d say the Ons look more casual. The toe area is a bit tighter than the Stan Smiths, so you may need to size 0.5 up. I walked 30km in 48 hours and my feet weren’t as sore as they usually would be with Stan Smiths. I’ve seen lots of people say they’re comfortable, but honestly, I’ve found them to be the opposite for long walks.

  • Unmatched comfort and width compared to Stan Smiths

I got the same ones (all white, though) and they are the most comfortable sneakers I have ever worn. I usually wear the Adidas Stan Smith and while these are also comfortable it's no comparison at all to the On The Roger Advantage. The On seem to be wider when I look at them from the top and the cushioning is superb and a huge difference in comfort to any other (similar looking) sneaker that I own. I can't recommend them enough.

  • Experience using Roger Advantage for a Japan trip vs Cloudtilt

I actually took both of the ON shoes you’re on about to Japan. I mostly ended up wearing Clouldtilts because it was more comfortable, and I didn’t care about if it matched my outfit or not. A lot of people will be wearing shoes that look like running shoes. It got wet once, and then started to squeak, so wasn’t great. The Roger Advantage is a lot better than the older version they made. New one feels more padded and nicer to walk around, though it’s bulky like the Nike AF1. I’m happy to wear it all day now than before, probably cos I’ve broken in more.

  • Long-term review: versatile and durable

Short answer, yes. I have 2 pairs of On Roger. One Advantage (black outer with white sole) and one Pro (all white leather). Both very good when dressing up or down and also very comfortable. The Pro is the shoe I wear most often, still in good shape and going strong for about 2 years.
