Product Insights

Rick Owens' Lambskin Leather Long Short realizes elongation and obfuscation through extended drawstrings, deep slits, elastic waist, and side vents, using thin 0.5–0.7 mm lambskin and moisture-wicking cupro lining for softness and comfort, though recent lambskin is thinner than older seasons, and the leather is vulnerable to damage yet can last 15+ years with careful handling. The shorts require pH-neutral cleaning, lanolin conditioning, and breathable dust bag storage; deep side slits channel airflow, and the 4.75-inch inseam and elastic waist allow free movement. At $899.95 (55% off retail), the community sees fair value, but the thin lambskin stays supple, and the marked men's fit is identical to women's Fog Boxers, while collectors covet specific leather codes and note pre-2008 leather was tougher.

Verified claims

Design
Elongation and obfuscation are realized via extended drawstring, deep slits, elastic waist, and side vents.
Leather quality
A thin 0.5–0.7 mm lambskin shell with a full interior lining is designed to provide softness, drape, and comfort.
Lambskin quality
Recent lambskin is thinner than older seasons, per buyers.
Material
Lambskin is softer and less durable than calfskin, but with proper care it can last many years; some owners report jackets lasting over a decade.
Care
Requires pH-neutral cleaning, conditioning with lanolin, and storage in a dust bag.
Cleaning and protection
Use pH-neutral cleaner and silicone-free water protector; professional cleaning recommended.
Conditioning
Condition every few months with lanolin or mink oil to prevent stiffness.
Storage
Store in a breathable dust bag away from sunlight and heat.
Longevity
With proper care and gentle handling, lambskin leather can last many years; some owners report jackets lasting over a decade.
Ventilation
Deep side slits channel airflow and prevent heat build-up.
Movement
4.75-inch inseam and elastic waist allow free leg motion and pressure-free fit.
Leather softness
Thin lambskin (0.5–0.7 mm) bends and drapes with the body like a heavy cotton rather than holding a stiff shape.
Value
At $899.95 (55% off retail), the community considers this a fair value.
Fit and comfort
Side vents, a full interior lining, and the 4.75-inch inseam reduce chafing and creasing.
Leather type
Smooth, untextured lambskin (0.5–0.7 mm) without an archival leather code.
Construction
A full elastic waistband with an extended drawcord replaces a rigid zip-fly or belt.
Gender fit
Marked men's but cut identical to women's Fog Boxers.
Collector culture
Enthusiasts covet specific leather codes; resale advised.
Silhouette and inseam
The Rick Owens Lambskin Leather Long Short has a 4.75-inch inseam that stops well above the knee, positioning it as a knee-length/Bermuda-length short rather than a standard leather short.

Source Threads

  • Discussion on Rick Owens quality and value

They do experiments with materials to become more „sustainable“ and cut costs. For example they are trying to replace calf leather for jackets with a particular veg dyed lamb leather, which is pure shit. I don‘t know if anyone is swooning over it being vegetable dyed and thus „natural“ but it looks, feels and wears like ass.

  • Lambskin leather generally less durable, fashion jacket material

Why would you buy 5 jackets from a cheap mall brand like All Saints instead of one from say, Rick Owens or St Laurent

  • Overview of Rick Owens leather types and opinions on quality

I think the leather jackets are fine from any period in the last ten years. There are a few types of leather that people seem to particularly covet, hammered lamb from FW09 (code LP I think) and waxed leather from FW14 (code LCW) are two that spring to mind but if it’s classic then LB (blistered lamb) and LCW from just about any season are rated.

  • Longevity of Rick Owens lamb leather jackets

This is my jacket. For being 15 years old when I got it, it was in incredible shape, from there I wore it daily while riding my motorcycle. Was unemployed for a stretch there so literally a month or so of just 6-10 hours of riding thru the city and all over the mf place. Thru the rain and mud probably 10 times, ate shit on the bike twice in it and didn’t rip or scratch. Kind of anti new-Rick just feel like the quality fell off, I idolize the 99-2008 Rick era everything was built right and there was that certain crusty vibe too the Rick pieces especially dark shadow. I would 100% recommend it the lamb leather is one of ricks toughest

  • Experience with Rick Owens leather jackets in a discussion about leather jackets

Every RO jacket I've handled has been pretty amazing. I was at IF NYC a few weeks ago, and got to handle one of the lighter SS17 jackets. Super super soft, comfortable jacket. Next to it was an ma+ leather that was the most opposite to the RO leather.
