Product Insights
These 16x16-inch natural linen napkins, handmade to order in Montreal, offer the sustainability and durability of linen (up to three times stronger than cotton, uses less water) while also being absorbent and hygienic, but they are best suited for cocktail or luncheon use due to their small size, require careful ironing to manage heavy wrinkles, and will soften only after many washes, with the new-linen scent fading after a few washes.

Deep Research
Why linen makes a better napkin
- Linen is up to three times stronger than cotton and gains approximately 10% additional strength when wet, meaning these napkins resist tearing during vigorous use and hold up to frequent machine laundering without fraying for years.
- Linen's long bast fibres relax and become increasingly flexible with every wash, developing a drape and hand that feels more buttery than crisp after about a dozen cycles — so these napkins will actually improve in feel as they age, rather than wearing out.
- Linen can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, roughly three times the absorbency of cotton, so these napkins will wick away liquid spills and greasy residue more efficiently at the table.
- The smooth surface of linen fibres does not trap dust mites or allergen particles, and its natural anti-static quality repels dirt; for those with allergies or sensitive skin, these napkins offer a non-irritating, chemical-free alternative to cotton that stays visibly clean longer between washes.
- Flax, the source of linen, typically uses up to five times less water than cotton and frequently requires no irrigation or pesticides, so the environmental footprint of these napkins is substantially lower than that of a cotton set — a tangible step toward more sustainable dining.
- Linen fibres are hollow and contain lignin, a natural biopolymer that disrupts bacterial cell membranes; this built-in resistance to microbial growth helps the napkins stay odour-free for multiple meals between washes, a practical advantage over cotton napkins that can develop a musty smell quickly.
The designer and handmade craftsmanship behind Confetti Mill
- That window is the production span, not a shipping lag; each set of four napkins is cut, hemmed, and finished after your order, so you receive a freshly-made product untouched by warehouse time — a rarity in home linens that aligns with the brand’s anti-overproduction stance.
- The brand's note that ‘each piece is unique and may vary slightly from the photo’ guarantees that no two napkins are clones; slubs, weave density, and exact hue shift subtly, meaning your table setting has the organic, non-repeating rhythm of a handmade textile rather than the sterile perfection of a machine run.
- Because the fabric is used ‘raw’ — without the bleaching, softening agents, or optical brighteners common to commercial napkins — it retains flax’s natural waxes and lignin, which are the basis of its anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic performance, ensuring the cloth stays fresher longer between washes.
- Harvey explicitly intends her textiles to ‘rethink our way of consuming and reconnect with the basics,’ and the napkins deliver that idea in their purest form: unbleached, undyed linen that forces the eye to engage with texture rather than pattern, making the table a lesson in material honesty.

Q&A
1 answered- Do these napkins have a noticeable linen smell when new, and does it fade after washing?
- Yes, new raw linen napkins typically have a noticeable earthy, grassy scent from the flax fibers. This initial aroma fades after the first few washes as manufacturing residues and natural oils are removed, leaving a clean, neutral linen smell.
