Product Insights
The Block-Stripe Placemat from Simons Maison is a 100% organic cotton woven mat that offers an upscale look for both formal and casual dining, with softness, absorbency, and pill resistance, but demands significant maintenance: cold washing causes over an inch of shrinkage and deep wrinkles that require ironing, colors can appear darker and muddier than online images, and even placemats from the same set may shrink unevenly.
Verified claims
- Color accuracy
- The shown colorway is three horizontal bands in light gray, medium gray, and charcoal; some buyers report the grey and beige colorways look darker or otherwise different in person than in the online photos, while the block-stripe design itself is widely praised.
- Wash performance
- The placemat is machine washable and dryable, but several buyers report that after one cold wash it shrinks by about an inch and develops deep wrinkles that require ironing.
- Colorfastness
- One buyer reports stripe colors stay unchanged after a cold wash on delicate, but others say colors can fade or look dull after the first wash.
- Ironing requirement
- Buyers are split: some say the placemat must be ironed after washing to lie flat, while others report it washes well without ironing.
- Pilling
- Resists pilling through repeated machine washes.
- Feel
- Notably soft and absorbs condensation quickly.
- Cleanliness
- Organic cotton cultivation avoids synthetic pesticides, so the finished placemat carries fewer chemical residues than conventional cotton.
- Place setting fit
- 13x20-inch placemat leaves 1–1.5 inches around a 10–11-inch plate, with room for cutlery.
- Manufacturing consistency
- Some units have weave irregularities or darker-than-shown colors.
- Design
- The block-stripe pattern adds an upscale look suitable for both formal and casual dining.
- Quality
- 100% organic cotton with longer staple fibers resists pilling and feels soft.
- Color selection
- Available in four colors — black, green, navy/midnight blue, beige — for seasonal table refreshes.
- Spill & stain
- The woven cotton surface provides a protective layer for dining, absorbing condensation and small spills to shield the table beneath.
- Styling versatility
- The heavy woven mat sits well on the table before washing, but after laundering some buyers report it can roll, wrinkle, or not lie flat without ironing.
- Stripe integrity
- The stripes are woven into the fabric rather than screen-printed, so they should not peel like a print; however, some buyers report the colors can fade or dull after washing.
- Woven performance
- Heavy woven organic cotton with a ribbed texture and a stitched edge for durability is absorbent and resists pilling.
- Shrinkage consistency
- Same-set placemats shrink unevenly after washing, leading to mismatched sizes.
- Organic certification
- The placemat is labeled 100% organic cotton, but the listing does not state GOTS or another recognized organic certification.
- Plate fit
- At 13 x 20 inches (33 x 50 cm), the placemat falls in the standard casual-dining size bracket and fits a standard 10–11 inch dinner plate with roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of mat visible on each side.
- Style and pattern
- The placemat has a striped pattern and rustic styling suited to everyday and casual dining.

Refreshing your table's look for the season
Shoppers use this block-stripe placemat as an easy table refresh, and some buyers reportedly stock up on different colors—like orange for fall and green for spring—to swap looks through the year. The pattern is described as modern and pairs well with many tables, including busy stone countertops where the understated design adds interest without competing. Note that reviews analysis reports the fabric can shrink after a single wash and comes out deeply creased, so ironing after each wash is expected if you want a flat surface.[1]
Dressing the table for holiday dinners
According to customer reviews, this placemat is used for holiday dinners and formal entertaining, where the block-stripe design and oversized proportions create an elegant backdrop for fine china. Reviewers say a quick iron gives it a crisp, high-end look, though some find ironing a chore if they want that crisp finish.[1]
Product comparison
Compared within this brand.
| Block-Stripe Placemat: Choose this if you want a heavy, substantial 100% organic cotton placemat with a graphic block-stripe pattern; per customer reviews, its weight keeps it from sliding on stone countertops and its look works for holiday tables and fine china. It is machine washable and comes in Black, Green, Navy/Midnight Blue, and Beige in a 13 by 20 inch (33 by 50 cm) size. Note that reviewers report deep creases and shrinkage after washing—ironing after every wash is needed for a flat, crisp look—and that greys and beiges especially can appear darker or muddier in person than online.[1] | Summer Stripes Placemat: Choose this if you want an easy-care, machine-washable placemat in 100% organic cotton for family dinners or summer patio and poolside meals, and like an embroidered look with colorful stitched stripes (pink, yellow, light blue, pale green) on a cream woven base with scalloped short edges. It measures 13 by 19.75 inches (33 by 50 cm) and has been given as a housewarming or bridal shower gift, with reviewers praising it as stylish, practical, and of good quality. Note that the pure cotton fabric wrinkles after washing and should be ironed after every wash, which one reviewer disliked, and the colors may appear lighter or paler in person than in online photos, prompting some buyers to exchange for a different shade.[2,3,4] | Textured Placemat: Choose this if you want a modern, textured accent for the table: it has a raised waffle-weave surface in a deep black, a good overall thickness per one reviewer, and is made of 100% recycled cotton in a 13 by 19.75 inches (33 x 50 cm) rectangle. It is machine washable and reviewers report it holds up well after washing, though air-drying is recommended since dryer use may damage it. Note that some edges may have a slightly rough or unfinished look, which one reviewer felt was a quality flaw in detail-oriented settings.[5,6] |

Facile d’entretien.

Shrunk significantly and looks sloppy post wash

Perfect Gift with Excellent Quality and Service
5 Stars! I recently purchased these cotton placemats as a gift for some friends, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice! The quality is fantastic—soft yet durable—and the design is simple, with just the right touch of color. It’s tasteful and will fit into any setting. I’m sure my friends will love them! Also, the customer service from Simon’s was top-notch. They kept me informed throughout the process, and the delivery arrived right on time. Highly recommend!
Excellent quality.
Very good quality. Thick& quite large. Color is different than it appeared on the website, so I attempted, twice, to make a return so I could re-order a different color, but the website wasn't working. Very disappointed 😞. Not sure what I'll do with them. The color doesn't match my decor at all.
