Product Insights

The xBloom Studio 5-In-1 Coffee Machine (CAD 849) combines a zero-retention, 80-step variable-speed grinder with PID temperature control and a 360° rotating spout to replicate manual pour-over consistency, using either proprietary xPods (fresh-ground beans from partner roasters at $1.80–$2.20 per cup) or own beans via app-driven recipes—though the app lacks brew history and recipe import/export, suffers from persistent bugs, and requires app use for own-bean adjustments, with slow support and delayed pod shipments. Siphon filtration eliminates paper filters, materials are BPA-free SUS316 stainless steel and Tritan, and knurled metal knobs allow full control without the app. The Studio adds an integrated 0.1g scale, direct water line, tea brewer, and community recipes, replacing separate equipment and freeing counter space, with a two-year warranty and buyers reporting identical café-quality cups daily after dial-in, but it brews only a single 8-11 oz cup at a time.

Deep Research

Omni Dripper design and extraction evenness

  • The Omni Dripper’s internal cavity is designed to accept either the coffee pod/grounds directly or the included tea infuser basket, so the same water‑dispensing system can brew both coffee and tea without swapping out the entire brew group, simplifying hardware and reducing countertop clutter.
  • The Omni Dripper brews directly onto a cup resting on a built‑in scale, enabling the machine to dispense water by weight rather than time, which eliminates manual measurement and ensures consistent extraction ratios regardless of bean density or grind size.

How the tea infuser performs for specialty tea

  • In Freesolo mode, you can set the machine to dispense hot water at a precise temperature without running a programmed steep—effectively turning the Studio into a temperature-controlled kettle—so you can fill a gaiwan or a larger teapot instantly without monitoring a stovetop.
  • Using the xBloom app, you can program a complete steep profile—water temperature, volume, and brew time—and assign it to one of the three hardware buttons on the Studio, which means your daily oolong or masala chai can be launched with a single press, identical to how coffee xPods work.
  • The Omni Tea Brewer uses a siphon mechanism to pull water through the leaves and then filter them out via an integrated sieve, so the finished cup is clean of fines and you never need to buy, store, or discard paper filter bags.
  • The Omni Tea Brewer clicks directly into the same magnetic dock as the coffee dripper, so transitioning from grinding beans to steeping leaves is a matter of lifting one pod off and pushing the other on—no tools, no recalibration, and no extra counter space taken.
  • The brewing chamber holds up to 160 ml of liquid, but the guided steep dispenses about 120 ml per cycle, yielding a focused single cup that encourages multiple short infusions from the same leaves—a process familiar to gongfu-style drinkers who value the evolving flavor of successive steeps.
  • The brewer is designed for whole-leaf tea with a recommended charge of 3–5 grams per steep—equivalent to a heaping teaspoon—which lets you apply the same dose-by-weight consistency that the machine brings to coffee, so the leaf-to-water ratio stays locked in every time you repeat a recipe.
  • All wetted components are medical-grade SUS316 stainless steel and BPA-free Tritan, so the filter resists corrosion from acidic teas and the chamber won't leach plastic flavors even after years of near-boiling water contact—this is the same stainless grade used in pharmaceutical processing, not a generic mesh.

xBloom Studio vs the original xBloom

  • The Studio debuted at $449 (now $599), a steep discount from the original's $799, yet packs a built-in scale, variable‑speed grinder, and multi‑mode brewing that the first‑generation all‑aluminum xPod‑centric machine never offered — the price drop didn't come from cost‑cutting features, it came from a supply‑chain and materials rethink that makes the Studio the better value for anyone who doesn't need a metal enclosure.
  • Beyond the 1‑liter removable tank, the Studio supports direct water line hookup — a feature not offered on the original — letting you plumb it into a refrigerator line or under‑sink filtration for an uninterrupted, refill‑free experience, which is especially practical in an office or a kitchen where the machine stays in one spot.
  • The included 58mm magnetic dosing cup fits a standard portafilter and attaches magnetically for one‑hand flip transfers — so you can use the Studio purely as a standalone grinder for your espresso machine, a workflow that the original never advertised; combined with the variable RPM and fine grind capability, it becomes a dual‑role kitchen tool.
  • The Studio embeds a high‑precision scale right into the drip tray — accurate to 0.1 g up to 1,000 g and 1 g up to 2,000 g — so you can weigh beans, monitor brew ratio, or use it for standalone kitchen tasks without a separate scale; the original lacked this, forcing users to supply their own.
  • The machine's three knurled metal knobs (grind, brew, scale) were deliberately styled to evoke music studio gear, and the entire product is the work of a former Apple product designer — this isn't just a coffee maker but a piece of precision‑instrument DNA that signals to a buyer that the experience is meant to be tactile and intentional, not just automated.
  • The Studio's grinder receives a new gearbox that delivers higher torque and adjustable speed from 60 to 120 RPM — a direct upgrade over the original's fixed‑speed unit — allowing you to tailor RPMs lower for cleaner filter grinds or higher for espresso‑fine settings, while the same 48mm zero‑retention burrs and 80 settings (each 18.75 microns) carry over to ensure grind quality remains professional‑grade.

xBloom pod ecosystem and roaster partnerships

  • Each xPod carries an NFC chip that transmits a roaster-defined brew profile — including grind size, water temperature, bloom time, and pour pattern — to the machine, ensuring that every cup reflects the roaster's intended extraction without any user intervention beyond inserting the pod and pressing start.
  • Through the xBloom subscription, pod cost drops to approximately $1.80–$2.20 per cup, which sits well below a café pour-over while delivering comparable quality — for daily specialty coffee drinkers, this represents a significant cost savings over time while maintaining a roaster-level experience.
  • The xBloom app's recipe-sharing feature allows users to brew with their own beans and contribute tuned profiles to a public library, effectively crowd-sourcing a database of brew parameters that extends the machine's capabilities beyond the official pod catalog and into any bean available worldwide.
  • Unlike conventional pre-ground pods, xPods contain whole beans that are ground in the machine immediately before brewing, preserving volatile aromatics and delivering cup quality that can rival manual pour-over — this is how the pod system maintains specialty-grade freshness in a single-serve format.
  • xPods are constructed from sugarcane fiber and are certified compostable in industrial facilities, addressing the waste concerns typically associated with single-serve pods and aligning with the values of specialty coffee drinkers who prioritize environmental sustainability.
  • The xBloom pod marketplace features specialty roasters such as Onyx Coffee Lab and Verve Coffee Roasters, each contributing their own calibrated NFC capsules — this turns the machine into a curated tasting flight with regional and seasonal variety, accessible without requiring manual recipe dial-in for each new coffee.
  • Roasters frequently offer exclusive small-batch or micro-lot coffees through the xBloom pod store that are not otherwise available in retail bags, giving subscribers access to unique coffees and a reason to remain engaged with the platform as new drops appear.

How the automated pour-over matches manual techniques

  • A motorized rotating spout mimics the concentric pour of a gooseneck kettle, distributing water evenly over the coffee bed to eliminate the dry spots and channeling that commonly result from fixed showerheads or unsteady manual pours.
  • A PID-controlled thermoblock maintains water temperature at the showerhead within 1°C of the target, preserving the thermal energy that light roasts need for high extraction — unlike a manual kettle where the stream can lose 2–4°C before hitting the coffee bed.
  • A built-in 0.1 g resolution scale continuously weighs water and grounds, enabling the machine to automatically stop at the target brew ratio — removing the most significant manual pour-over error source: inattentive weighing and timing.
  • The proprietary Omni Dripper basket is engineered to work with the rotating spout’s shifting pour pattern, its rib design promoting a level extraction bed even as the water contact point moves — a synergy that a manual V60 and human pour cannot achieve because of minute positional variability.
  • The machine can execute a full pour-over recipe — bloom, two or three pour pulses at distinct flow rates, and drawdown — with pump-driven precision that replicates the deconstructed manual process but with the repeatability of a laboratory dispenser.

Build quality and long-term durability

  • The xBloom Studio ships with a two-year warranty, extending beyond the industry-standard one-year coverage for coffee makers and signaling the manufacturer's confidence in the integrated grinder, heater, and electro-mechanical components.
  • Barista Magazine's hands-on found the machine built from BPA-free food-grade plastic, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, and food-grade silicone — a combination that delivers a weighty, premium feel and resists flex or creak, important for a device that integrates a powerful grinder and water pump in a relatively compact frame.

Q&A

10 answered
What type of burrs does the grinder use (conical or flat) and are they replaceable?
The xBloom Studio uses 48 mm stainless steel conical burrs [1]. The product information does not specify if they are user-replaceable, but most conical burr grinders allow replacement.
Is the water temperature adjustable for different brewing methods (e.g., espresso vs. pour-over)?
Yes, the water temperature is adjustable. You can customize the temperature for different brew methods like pour-over and tea through the machine's controls or app [2]. However, the xBloom Studio does not brew espresso itself, so temperature adjustment applies to pour-over and tea brewing.
How do you clean the grinder and brew chamber, and does the machine have any self-cleaning or descaling programs?
The grinder has an automatic idle sweeping program after each grind and a spiral clearing mechanism that minimizes daily cleaning needs [3]. Use the included brush to sweep the powder drop opening and bottom of the grinder regularly. No specific descaling or self-cleaning program for the brew chamber is mentioned in the product documentation.
Can the tea infuser be removed when making coffee, and is there any risk of coffee oils affecting tea flavor?
Yes, the tea infuser is a separate, removable component [6]. To avoid coffee oils affecting tea flavor, simply remove the infuser and clean the brew chamber thoroughly between uses. There is no permanent risk of flavor transfer if cleaned properly.
What is the maximum batch size for drip coffee or cold brew? (Water tank capacity is given, but brew output may differ.)
The xBloom Studio is designed for single-serve brewing, making about 8–11 oz per cup [2]. For cold brew, the machine can grind beans to the appropriate coarseness, but it does not brew cold brew itself. The water tank holds 32 oz (946 ml), but brew output per cycle remains a single cup.
How does the xBloom Studio compare to the Fellow Aiden?
The Aiden excels at batch brewing and has more flexible profiles, while the xBloom offers a built-in grinder and a compelling pod ecosystem.
Can I use my own coffee beans with the xBloom Studio?
Yes, the Omni Dripper and custom recipe system allow you to brew any beans, and many users prefer this over the pods.
Is the grinder in the xBloom Studio good enough?
The built-in 48mm heptagonal burr grinder is excellent, on par with premium hand grinders like the ZP6.
Do I need the app to use the machine?
Basic operation is possible with physical controls, but creating or adjusting recipes requires the app, which has mixed reviews.
What are the main complaints about xBloom?
Slow customer service, unreliable order fulfillment, and a feature-lacking app are the top frustrations.

  • Mixed experience with hardware and company

The hardware is amazing. The first machine worked amazingly, and so does the studio. Were the company still operating the way it did during the Kickstarter and early days of the Original, I'd give it my enthusiastic endorsement. Now, I'm just glad the new machine has physical controls, because now I technically don't need xBloom to exist to keep using the machine.

  • xBloom community manager explains the vision

xBloom first and foremost is a pod machine designed to offer roasters the ability to have their coffees presented to consumers at home exactly the way they would like to present them. The focus is perfect consistency and ease of use with no learning curve. We want more people to buy more specialty coffee around the larger market, and the way to bridge the cap is convenience.

  • Successful dial-in and consistent cups

I went to a coffee shop and had a V60 using a coffee that was fermented in grape juice. amazing flavor but I found that the brew was on a weaker side than I like it. Bought the coffee beans. My Xbloom was 3 days old. Asked the barista the recipe he used, temperature, number of pours, bloom, ratio. Went home, grinder set at 55, water at 92C, three pours, bloom, ratio 1:16. Brewed. Measured it with the DiFluid. Was in the middle of the far right line of the SCA square. Meaning medium strength, more on the bitter side. But the flavor was there. And man, it was better than the one in the coffee shop. Tweaked the grinder to 60, perfect flavor for me and my wife. A hint of bitterness in a sea of grape flavored delicious coffee. I redid the brew every day in the past, four days. Same great taste, every day, better than the on in the shop. Love this machine.
