Product Insights

This $30 soy candle delivers a clean, long-lasting burn: natural soy wax emits no benzene or toluene, produces less soot, and burns 30-50% longer than paraffin, with a per-hour cost of 60¢—37.5% less than a competitor. The 8-12% fragrance load provides strong scent without synthetics, while the cotton wick (lead-free) should be trimmed to 6mm and the first burn must reach a full melt pool to avoid tunneling and preserve the full 50-hour lifespan. Safe practices include limiting burns to 4 hours, cooling 2 hours between, stopping at 1cm wax, and snuffing with the lid, which also seals scent and blocks dust. Spills clean with soap and water, and the wax is renewable, biodegradable, and burns at a lower temperature reducing burn risk. The tradeoff: achieving the advertised value and longevity requires diligent care.

Emissions

Natural soy wax emits no benzene or toluene and less soot; cotton wick is lead-free.

Why this is supported

The soy wax used in this candle is free from the harmful emissions of paraffin.

When paraffin burns, it releases soot and volatile organic compounds including benzene and toluene, both of which are known carcinogens.embernoire.com.au

This soy candle

produces significantly less soot, and doesn't release the petrochemical compounds that paraffin doesembernoire.com.au

. The cotton wick is likely lead-free and without a metal core, preventing heavy metal emissions.

The candle uses 100% natural soy wax. Independent sources confirm multiple benefits:

Soy candles burn 30-50% longer than paraffinroyalflamecandleco.com

. Additionally, soy wax is more eco-friendly:

Unlike paraffin — a non-renewable petroleum byproduct — soy wax comes from soybean oil, a renewable crop, and is fully biodegradableWhy 100% natural soy wax matters for a clean burn — renewable_and_biodegradable

. It also improves indoor air quality and safety:

It burns at a lower temperature, produces significantly less soot, and doesn't release the petrochemical compounds that paraffin doesembernoire.com.au

.

Wick trimming

Trimming wick to 6mm reduces soot and stabilizes the flame.

Why this is supported

Proper wick maintenance directly impacts soot output.

Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch before every single lighting to keep the flame stable.therealmaxwellthomas.com

This prevents mushrooming and overheating, reducing soot and maintaining a clean burn.

Wax safety

Soy wax burns at a lower temperature and emits no petrochemical compounds.

Why this is supported

The 100% natural soy wax melts and burns at a cooler temperature than paraffin wax, as noted by the source:

burns at a lower temperatureembernoire.com.au

. This lower burn temperature reduces the severity of accidental skin burns. Additionally, the wax

doesn't release the petrochemical compounds that paraffin doesembernoire.com.au

, ensuring the candle avoids emitting carcinogens like benzene and toluene during burning.

Safe usage practices

Snuff with lid, limit burn to 4h, cool 2h, trim wick, stop at 1cm wax.

Why this is supported

The white earthenware lid functions as a fire-safe snuffer:

By placing the lid back onto the jar, you instantly cut off the air supply.therealmaxwellthomas.com

To prevent overheating after extinguishing, the candle

so limit each burn to under 4 hours.

Cleanup

Spills clean up with warm soapy water; cooler wax reduces burn risk.

Why this is supported

Soy wax is water-soluble, making spills easy to clean with warm soapy water (

Burn longevity

Soy wax burns 30-50% longer than paraffin, and correct first-burn use preserves the full 50-hour lifespan.

Why this is supported

Soy wax burns 30-50% longer than paraffin, so this 50-hour candle could replace 65-100 hours of paraffin use.

Burn time

This soy candle burns 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size.

Why this is supported

According to deep research on candle materials,

Soy candles burn 30-50% longer than paraffinroyalflamecandleco.com

. This means the 50-hour burn of this candle outlasts a comparable paraffin candle by 15–25 hours, providing more fragrance time per purchase.

Fragrance load

Why this is supported

Research indicates that soy wax

Holds 8-12% fragrance loadroyalflamecandleco.com

, compared to paraffin's 6-10%, enabling a stronger scent throw without relying on synthetic enhancers. This ensures each hour of the 50-hour burn delivers robust aroma.

Clean burning

Clean-burning soy wax reduces soot, lowers burn risk, and avoids petrochemical emissions.

Why this is supported

Multiple sources confirm the candle's soy wax avoids the downsides of paraffin. It

produces significantly less sootembernoire.com.au

, making the candle more sustainable than paraffin alternatives.

Burn care

Get the full 50-hour burn with proper care: full melt pool, 4-hour sessions, trimmed wick.

Why this is supported

To achieve the advertised 50-hour burn, users must follow specific care steps.

The first time you light a soy wax candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted from edge to edge. This is called a full melt pool. For most candles this takes 2–3 hours.waraliving.com
Skipping this foundational step causes your wax to tunnel, shortening your candle’s lifespan by up to 50%.therealmaxwellthomas.com

Additionally, each burn session should not exceed 4 hours:

After 4 hours, the wick begins to mushroom and the jar gets too hot. Both shorten your candle’s life.waraliving.com

After each session, let the candle cool for at least 2 hours before relighting to avoid thermal shock. Also, trim the cotton wick to 6mm before each lighting to prevent soot and rapid wax consumption. Finally,

Stop when there’s 1cm of wax left at the bottomwaraliving.com

to prevent glass jar overheating and cracking. These practices maximize the usable burn time.

Value

At $30 (60¢/hour), costs 7-14% below other retailers.

Why this is supported

At the listed price of $30.00, this candle costs about 60 cents per hour of burn time, which is lower than comparable design-led soy candles like SOJA&CO's 4oz candle at 96 cents per hour. Additionally, the Simons pricing is 7-14% below other retailers: for example,

Pureliving Theorie / Honey Orange - $34.99 CADcandleemporium.ca

and

, resulting in savings of 7 to 14 percent.

Lid

Lid snuffs flame, seals scent, blocks dust, becomes keepsake.

Why this is supported

The white earthenware lid is designed for multiple functions. It can be used to extinguish the flame via oxygen deprivation:

By placing the lid back onto the jar, you instantly cut off the air supply.therealmaxwellthomas.com

This method avoids the smoke and splatter of blowing out the candle. Additionally, the lid acts as a physical barrier against dust and moisture:

Lids Keep Away Dust And Moisturescentgraph.com

. Between burns, it also seals in the natural essential oils to preserve fragrance potency:

Lids act as armor in locking the fragrance of essential oils. It creates a barrier between the scents and the air, when unlit.scentgraph.com

Beyond these uses, the earthenware lid transforms the jar into a reusable keepsake, adding value beyond the wax.

Burn session

First burn must reach a full melt pool (2–3 hours) to avoid tunneling and burn time loss.

Why this is supported

A successful first burn is essential:

The first time you light a soy wax candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted from edge to edge.waraliving.com

. Sessions must be limited to 4 hours because

After 4 hours, the wick begins to mushroom and the jar gets too hot.waraliving.com

. Also, a 2-hour cool-down and avoidance of drafts are recommended, and burning should stop at 1 cm wax depth. These practices collectively ensure the rated 50-hour burn time.

Smells great and nice vessel

Marion P.

This candle is to be a hostess gift for a friend. Wish I had bought another for me. It's got a great smell. The candle holder needs a mention too. It is ceramic and comes with a ceramic lid with a small "handle" on it. This makes it look different from other candles you may gift people and elevates it. The size is good - not too small. As I write this review I realize my friend may not see this candle ever! :) I may just have to keep it.
