Product Insights
Yummi Candles' Taper Ultra-Long Conical Candles Set Of 12, at CAD 28, promises value and clean-burning elegance with food-grade paraffin and no petroleum odor, but demands meticulous preparation: refrigeration, wick trimming, and draft-free conditions for dripless performance. Burn time yields 6.5 inches after 3.5 hours versus West Elm's 7.5, yet the set is cheaper per taper. The main tradeoff is color accuracy—taupe often mismatches online images, and replacement shipments may also be wrong, with customer service reported as unhelpful. Hand-dipped tapers require secure fitting and flat storage to avoid warping, and dripless performance only holds in strictly draft-free environments.

Deep Research
Yummi Candles' Canadian-made history and reputation
- Yummi Candles has been a family-operated business since 1976, which means over 48 years of accumulated proprietary wax formulation and hand-dipping expertise that mass-market suppliers lack — relevant for a wedding coordinator who needs tapers that burn predictably across dozens of tables.
- Because Yummi manufactures candles to order rather than stocking pre-made inventory, your set of 12 tapers is likely produced within days of shipping, meaning the wax hasn't sat in a warehouse absorbing ambient odors or losing its surface finish — particularly noticeable on the hard-shell outer layer that prevents dripping.
- Yummi's own story positions its website as purpose-built for 'bride to be wedding customers' — which explains the deep color palette of 45+ shades and the bulk sets of 12; this isn't a general home decor brand dabbling in tapers, it's an event specialist's core line.
- Every candle is manufactured at Neo-Image Candlelight Ltd’s facility in Toronto, which houses an in-house quality lab and a custom design team — so these tapers are not white-labeled goods from an overseas contract line, and the same team that makes private-label candles for global institutions is producing this set for your event.
- The fact that Yummi develops private-label candles for institutions worldwide signals that their production has been stress-tested for volume consistency and safety compliance — the same 15-inch taper you buy for a wedding has to meet the kind of defect tolerance that a hotel chain's procurement department demands.
- Independent directory Well Made in Canada confirms Yummi is 100% Canadian-owned and that 95% of its SKUs qualify for the Made in/Product of Canada label, so the 'Canadian brand' tag on the Simons listing is backed by a supply chain largely within Canada, not just a marketing claim.
- Yummi's published code of ethics explicitly prohibits lead wicks and harmful dyes or fragrances — a commitment that predates many current regulations and matters when you're burning a dozen unscented tapers in a poorly ventilated reception hall.
How hand-dipped construction affects burn and driplessness
- Yummi Candles has been family-owned and operated in Canada since 1976, meaning the hand-dipping technique has been refined over nearly five decades — that longevity suggests a deep-seated craft expertise that mass-market brands rarely possess, and it supports the consistent quality across batches and sizes.
Caring for and burning ultra-long taper candles
- The advertised 10-hour burn time assumes 3–4 hour burn intervals in a draft-free room; burning continuously beyond that causes the flame to enlarge as more wick is exposed, consuming wax faster and triggering drips well before 10 hours total.
- Because the 15-inch length amplifies any looseness in the holder, using Stickum adhesive wax or carefully trimming the candle base to fit snugly prevents leaning that quickly leads to drips — a step the manufacturer explicitly recommends for hand-dipped tapers.
- Chilling these tapers (wrapped in foil or plastic) in the refrigerator, not the freezer, slows the burn rate and yields a more even flame, putting less strain on the hard-shell wax wall — but freezing will introduce moisture into the braided cotton wick, causing sputtering and structural damage.
- Because hand-dipped production creates small diameter variations (up to ±1/16 inch), some tapers may sit loosely in standard holders; shaving a thin slice off the base with a sharp knife gives a custom, tight seat that eliminates wobble and the potential for drips.
- The candle relies on a thin hard-shell wax wall that contains the melted wax pool; even a slight draft that causes the flame to flicker melts this wall, releasing the pool and starting a drip cascade — so “draft-free” means no perceptible air movement, not just avoiding open windows.
- At 15 inches, these tapers are highly prone to warping; storing them flat — individually wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap, not stacked under heavier candles — keeps them arrow-straight so they don’t lean in the holder and burn unevenly.
What food-grade paraffin wax means for burning and safety
- Fully refined food-grade paraffin contains less than 0.5% residual oil — a near-total removal of the oily fractions that in lower-grade slack wax can range from 3 to 50%; this extreme refinement is the material reason the wax melts cleanly without releasing a petroleum smell, visible smoke, or sticky residue, even in an unscented candle.
- A 2007 international study comparing emissions from paraffin, soy, stearin, and beeswax candles found that 'the combustion byproducts of the waxes studied were virtually identical in composition and quantity, with all emissions levels registering far below the most restrictive of any applicable indoor-air standards' — so burning these unscented food-grade tapers around guests produces the same indoor-air profile as plant-based waxes, directly undermining the myth that paraffin is inherently more polluting.
Choosing holders for 15-inch taper candles
- The fire-risk profile of tall tapers is well-documented: their height and narrow footprint make them prone to tipping, which is why all safety guidance insists on a sturdy, heat-resistant holder with a base heavy enough to resist a stray elbow — a broad-footed metal candlestick or a weighty glass hurricane base is what keeps the 15-inch flame going up instead of sideways.
- Yummi Candles’ own product page advises using Stickum adhesive or trimming the base to fit holders — for a 15-inch candle, any play at the socket translates into a large arc sway, so that quarter-inch of grip difference is the line between a steady dinner-table candle and one that drip-paints the tablecloth.

Q&A
6 answered- Do these candles drip or smoke noticeably when burning, especially in draft-free conditions?
- These candles are designed to be dripless and smokeless in draft-free conditions, thanks to the hard-shell food-grade paraffin wax and all-cotton wick [1]. For optimal performance, keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch and avoid drafts [1][4].
- What is the actual shade of the taupe candles compared to the product image? Are they more gray or brown in natural light?
- Community feedback indicates that taupe shade may differ from product images, with some users reporting it appears more grayish or brownish depending on lighting [6]. Since these are hand-dipped, slight variations are expected, and we recommend checking user photos for a real-world sense of the color.
- Does the food-grade paraffin wax have any noticeable scent when burned, and are the wicks free of lead or other metals?
- The candles are scentless — made with unscented food-grade paraffin wax, so there is no noticeable fragrance when burned [1]. The wicks are 100% cotton, and Yummi Candles adheres to industry standards that ban lead wicks [4], ensuring they are free of lead or other metals.
- How straight do these candles burn? Do they tend to lean or bend during burning?
- When burned in draft-free conditions and with the wick trimmed properly, these handcrafted tapers burn evenly without leaning [1]. However, due to their hand-dipped nature, slight variations in straightness are possible, and storing them flat helps prevent warping that could cause bending during burning [4].
- Are Yummi tapers worth it for weddings?
- They offer good value for bulk purchases with decent burn time, but beware of potential color mismatches and customer service issues.
- How long do Yummi tapers burn?
- After 3.5 hours, about 6.5 inches remain, which is shorter than some premium brands like West Elm.

Burn time comparison: Yummi vs other taper brands
Yummi Candles and CANDWAX (from Amazon) did okay after 3.5 hours = 6.5 inches. It’s a decent option for colored tapers and Yummi is a good deal if you buy in bulk.

Color inconsistency and poor customer service
Do not buy from Yummi Candles. I'm now receiving a third shipment of candles from them because the first two shipments are extremely different from their website pictures. I ordered Sandstone (cream/tan color) candles last month and they came in as a dark purple.

Positive recommendation for bulk taper candles
That’s where we got ours too. They were the best price I could find, especially in bulk and a variety of complementary sizes. They were also quick to send replacements when a few candleholders arrived broken.
