The Magic of Canada's Christmas Markets

23 Nov 2019

December is here and winter has already slipped on its white coat. It’s the time of year for twinkle lights, Christmas carols, and comforting scents. It’s also the time of year when tons of Christmas markets open in different towns and cities across Canada. It’s the perfect opportunity to find decorations, regional products, and unique gifts that have been made by artisans.

Here are a few suggestions that’ll help you discover Canada’s Christmas markets from east to west and enjoy the magic of the season to the max!

Quebec City’s German Christmas Market
From November 22 – December 23, 2019

During the holiday season, Old Quebec City gets inspired by Germany! Bavarian decor is brought to life by over 90 vendors stationed in traditional wooden kiosks! The menu of Québec City's German Christmas Market: Quebec products, specialties from Germany and Europe like savoury pretzels, Nuremberg’s famous gingerbread, and impressive giant hot dogs and sauerkraut! Also, don’t forget to browse all the products that have been handcrafted by artisans. Take advantage of this opportunity to taste German cuisine that’s been reinvented by Quebec chefs and to discover products that show the abundance of the land. The holiday spirit is alive and well in traditions like the puppet theatre for kids (and adults!), brass bands, and choirs. There are also enchanting decorations that are just magical when lit up in the heart of the capital city and that give this market its own unique cachet!

Ottawa Christmas Market
From November 29 – December 22, 2019

The very first European-style Christmas market in Ottawa will be taking place this year at Lansdowne! Drawing inspiration from some of Europe’s most famous traditional Christmas markets, decorations, music, vendors, artisans, and the ever-popular Santa Claus come together so you can celebrate the excitement of the holiday season. You can also explore a forest of Christmas trees that will be spectacularly lit by a canopy of over 100,000 energy-efficient bulbs. It’s an experience that will bring a glow to everyone’s eyes!

Toronto Christmas Market
From November 14 – December 22, 2019

The Toronto Christmas Market totally transforms the very popular Distillery District located east of downtown Toronto. Many buildings dating from the Victorian era are a part of the industrial architecture of this neighbourhood, which has been designated as a National Historic Site in Canada. Each winter, the Toronto Christmas Market, also called the Distillery Christmas Market, comes alive, reminding us of European holiday markets with its postcard-worthy Victorian decor. It’s decked out in tons of tiny lights that illuminate the traditional decor to create a romantic and magical setting. Not to miss: The massive and majestic Christmas tree that stands tall over the market. Adults can taste artisanal beers and mulled wine, enjoy lots of shows, and also take their little ones to meet Santa. Riding the Ferris wheel and carousel are also very popular activities, and not just amongst kids! Need some great gift ideas? Many kiosks offer candles, figurines, wooden games, and even sweet treats for the foodies on your list.

Vancouver Christmas Market

The site of the 2010 Olympic Cauldron gets decked out for the holidays in December during the Vancouver Christmas Market. The area has a spectacular vue located along the coast of Coal Harbour. Composed of over 80 huts, this German-inspired market (with some vendors coming straight from Germany) offers traditional decorations and culinary specialties that are typical of Eastern European countries. Besides its panoramic views, the Vancouver Christmas Market stands out for its impressive giant Christmas tree decorated with 36,000 lights that visitors can walk through. Yes, that's right, it's a walk-in tree! This is a one-of-a-kind experience that will instantly rekindle the holiday spirit in your heart. After walking through the tree, adventure down Lovers' Lane, a long 20-foot tunnel decorated with shimmering lights and mistletoe. It's an enchanting sight that definitely Insta-worthy!
