MARATHON SEASON: What to wear on your runs?

Accessible and versatile, running has become extremely popular over the last few years. It appeals to those who like to exercise on their own as well as social butterflies, and most importantly, it’s an activity that can be done anywhere year round. 
In cities or in the great outdoors, in good weather or in bad, as part of a group or on your own, all you need to do is get on your gear and head outside!   

5 or 10, 21.1 or 42.2 km, whatever your goal for running might be, it’s essential to be well prepared and well dressed. Today, sports gear for every activity has become a major must. It not only helps both beginners and experts perform to their best ability, but it also adds to their enjoyment of the sport. Technical clothing, windbreaker jackets, specialized shoes, water bottles... a wide array of specific products is now available to enhance your runs. 
 

PERFORMANCE THREADS TAKE ON THE TRENDS

More and more, fashion is playing a bigger role in activewear and combining trends with performance. Now, you can pick out stylish options for your running outfits while still being dressed in a way that's appropriate for the activity. Transparent details, modern fits, contrasting layers, and graphic prints are all hitting the track to the delight of today's trend-loving athletes! 

TECHNICAL FABRICS TO KEEP YOU COMFY

Technical clothing is constantly improving itself in order to offer runners the ultimate when it comes to comfort. New innovative technology now provides athletes with some major advantages. We're thinking here about Dri-Fit by Nike, which wicks away moisture, and HeatGear by Under Armour, which keeps you cool and dry.

THE ART OF LAYERING

Changes in the weather shouldn’t stand in the way of you reaching your goals, so it’s essential to dress adequately in order to get the most out of every run. The following formula for layering lets you create the best clothing combinations depending on what Mother Nature has in store. 
 


LAYER 1: BREATHABLE FABRIC

Choose a form-fitting garment made of an absorbent synthetic or natural textile like merino wool for your winter runs. This layer should keep you dry by wicking sweat away from your skin. 



LAYER 2: INSULATING FABRIC

Avoid cotton or polar fleece, since these fabrics allow sweat to accumulate on the skin instead of wicking it away. Opt for insulating fabrics, like polyester, as well as technical fabrics that offer warmth without weighing you down.



LAYER 3: PROTECTIVE FABRIC

A lightweight and breathable windbreaker jacket will protect you against the elements. It will go everywhere you do on colder days when there’s less daylight. Make sure that these pieces have reflective details so that you remain visible even in the dark. 

While on your winter runs, don’t forget that a lot of heat is lost through your head and feet. Think about keeping them covered in breathable fabrics that are not too warm. LONG LIVE YOUR CLOTHING!

Caring for your technical clothing is important not only to keep them looking their best, but also to maintain their performance.  If you can’t wash your clothes right away after running, make sure to lay them out so that they dry. This will prevent the growth of bacteria and odours. 

It’s recommended to follow the care instructions found on the clothing’s tags. Using a detergent designed for technical clothing is also advised, but a mild liquid detergent can be used as well. Never use fabric softener as it clogs the pores in the fabric. It’s important to rinse out and hang the garment in a dry place.

For jackets with a waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex), putting them in the dryer will restore their water repellent properties. You can also use a high-performance waterproofing treatment to make them like new again.
