Hello, Ottawa!

11 Aug 2016

This is it!  We’re now located in our nation’s capital.

Today, Thursday, August 11, Simons’ expansion across Canada continues with the opening of our thirteenth store in Ottawa!

Impressive renovations now allow you to enjoy an exceptional shopping experience in a beautiful and brightly lit space that sits atop the former façade of Ogilvy’s.

We want to be part of the recently renewed energy in Ottawa’s downtown core where culture, government and commerce converge. Our new Ottawa location is particularly significant because of our shared Canadian retail history with the Ogilvy family

We are extremely happy to be a part of the shopping centre’s new expansion with neighbours like H&M and Nordstrom. Our 100,000-square-foot store occupies the 3rd and 4th floors of the building.  Our Djab, Twik, Miiyu, and women’s I.Fiv5 departments are found on the 3rd floor, while our Icône, Contemporaine, Designer, men’s I.Fiv5, Le 31 and Simons Maison departments are located on the upper floor. Also on the upper floor is Ève Café, where you can take a break for a tasty treat while shopping.

As always, our store features a striking art installation and this time, it was Canadian artist Shayne Dark in charge of producing the piece. Originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Dark is a visual artist who now lives and works in Kingston, Ontario. He is known for his colourful and impressive sculptural installations.

Meant to stimulate a spiritual or visceral reaction in the viewer, his works are a site of tension and often evoke the contrasts between the cultural and the natural worlds, industrial and organic materials, as well as between the notions of permanence and movement, space and time.

Torrential Red is the title of Dark’s sculpture that hangs in the very centre of the store. This impressive piece is 22 feet tall, 8 feet wide, and made of ironwood, the common name given to Virginia’s Ostrya trees. Dark gathered the materials for the installation from the forest near his home and then covered them in a rich, red pigment. Torrential Red conveys the contrast between urban and natural environments.

Since our store is located in the heart of downtown, it’ll be easy to plan a trip to see Parliament, Byward Market or the National Gallery of Canada around your shopping spree!

Our expansion into Western Canada continues in March 2017. Next stop: Calgary!
