A gift that will have everyone talking!

8 Nov 2016

At Simons, we love collaborating with and standing up for local organizations and causes. On this occasion, our Twik department is partnering with Fondation Sourdine, a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise money in support of the École oraliste de Québec pour enfants malentendants et sourds [Quebec City oralist school for deaf and hearing-impaired children], the only francophone school in North America devoted to oralism.

To show our support and help these children grow up with the social skills and tools they need, we have created a line of T-shirts inspired by universal language. For every T-shirt sold, $5 will go to Fondation Sourdine.

THE FOUNDATION

Fondation Sourdine was created in 1992 by a Université Laval research group named GRIES (le Groupe de recherche en intervention auprès de l’enfant sourd [the deaf children intervention research group]) in conjunction with parents concerned with the integration of deaf and hearing-impaired children in schools and society. Since then, observing the state of education of many deaf and hearing-impaired children, the GRIES team has led various projects related to their schooling and integration and to the development of their means of communication.

Over the years and through advanced research, the importance of continuing to work with deaf and hearing-impaired children entering elementary school and providing ongoing support for other school-aged youth has become clear. It is for this reason that the École oraliste de Québec was created.

THE SCHOOL

The main objective of the École oraliste de Québec is to offer individualized help to children in preschool, primary school and early secondary school and to ensure the integration of deaf and hearing-impaired students in Quebec. Working with the students' parents, its team assesses each child's needs and carefully analyses the skills he or she needs to develop. On top of providing all of these services and its expertise, the school is open to all and does not charge enrolment fees.

We strongly encourage you to check out this video, which features students of all ages from the École oraliste de Québec. It will melt your heart!
