Product Insights
Huha's Plain Mineral High-Waist Boyshort Tencel™ Modal integrates a pharma-grade zinc oxide gusset, verified to transfer to skin for lasting odor control and reduced gynecological flare-ups, while the TENCEL Modal shell wicks moisture 20% faster than cotton and breathes better. The full-coverage, high-waist design with a continuous front-to-back gusset minimizes irritation, and materials from certified forests with closed-loop production offer biodegradability (except spandex). However, sizing inconsistency and occasional durability issues (gusset pinholes, seam unraveling) lead to recommendations to size up and cold-wash/air-dry; cheaper cotton alternatives can match health benefits, and some buyers question the claims.
- Zinc technology
The SMARTCEL gusset integrates pharma-grade zinc oxide and is Hohenstein-verified to transfer to skin.
Why this is supported
The Hohenstein institute verified that
The Hohenstein textile testing institute has verified that Smartfiber’s SmartCel Sensitive fibres transfer zinc on to the skin.
sportstextiles.comThe fiber is defined as a lyocell fibre with incorporated pharmaceutical zinc oxide:
SMARTCEL™ is a lyocell fibre with incorporated pharmaceutical zinc oxide.
smartfiber.deThe zinc used is pharmaceutically pure:
The fibre contains zinc white pharma 4 – a pharmaceutically pure zinc oxide made out of metallic zinc.
sportstextiles.comAdditionally, the product Q&A confirms that the SMARTCEL lyocell in the gusset contains 16% zinc oxide by weight and maintains antibacterial effectiveness for at least 100 washes:
The SMARTCEL lyocell used in the gusset contains 16% zinc oxide by weight in its conditioned state [1]. Antibacterial effectiveness is maintained for at least 100 washes, with a drop in effectiveness of only 2–21% after that many cycles [1][2].
What is the zinc oxide concentration in the SMARTCEL lyocell gusset, and how many washes does the antibacterial effect last?- User results
Buyers report fewer gynecological flare-ups while using the product.
Why this is supported
Multiple Reddit users in r/Healthyhooha report experiencing fewer UTIs and BV flare-ups while wearing Huha underwear, attributing the benefit to the zinc gusset. Although anecdotal, the Hohenstein-verified zinc transfer provides a plausible mechanism for these reported outcomes.
- Marketing precision
Microbiologists flagged incorrect microorganism nomenclature on the brand's website.
Why this is supported
A user identifying as a microbiologist on Reddit noted that the brand's website uses incorrect formatting for microorganism names:
As a microbiologist, the incorrect nomenclature of the microorganisms is a red flag for me (species should be lowercase, whole name should be italicized).
u/biobeaker in r/HealthyhoohaWhile the underlying SMARTCEL technology is independently verified, the marketing presentation may undermine trust for scientifically literate buyers.
- Zinc fabric
Zinc-embedded gusset transfers antibacterial mineral to skin, effective for 100 washes.
Why this is supported
The zinc oxide is embedded directly into the SMARTCEL lyocell fibers during spinning:
SMARTCEL™ is a lyocell fibre with incorporated pharmaceutical zinc oxide.
smartfiber.deThis is a pharmaceutical-grade zinc oxide (zinc white pharma 4), and Hohenstein Institute testing confirmed it transfers to the skin:
The Hohenstein textile testing institute has verified that Smartfiber’s SmartCel Sensitive fibres transfer zinc on to the skin.
sportstextiles.comThe wide front-to-back gusset maximizes contact, and the effect is sustained for at least 100 washes, supported by the 16% zinc concentration and care instructions (insights 6,12,13).
- Moisture wicking
Modal fabric wicks moisture 20% faster and breathes better than cotton, aided by the boyshort cut.
Why this is supported
The TENCEL Modal fabric in the body wicks moisture 20% faster than cotton, as measured:
Modal’s 20% faster moisture-wicking performance compared to cotton keeps skin measurably drier during workouts.
textiletuts.comIt also breathes better than cotton:
modal’s breathability and moisture-wicking properties are slightly weaker than tencel, they are also better than cotton.
sino-silk.comThis moisture management is inherent to the fiber and does not diminish with washing. The full-coverage boyshort cut with longer leg adds airflow, helping keep the area drier (insight 14).
- Buyer feedback
Some buyers report fewer gynecological infections while wearing Huha; others question the claims and note cheaper cotton alternatives.
Why this is supported
Some buyers report benefits:
I have a history of gyno issues, but haven't had any flare ups while wearing Huhas. This could be due to lots of things, but the zinc etc. could be making a difference.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashionHowever, others express skepticism. A microbiologist notes:
As a microbiologist, the incorrect nomenclature of the microorganisms is a red flag for me (species should be lowercase, whole name should be italicized).
u/biobeaker in r/HealthyhoohaAnd some users point out that high-quality cotton underwear offers similar benefits at a lower price:
they are great, but if you are not looking to splurge on undies 100% cotton ones with a basic price tag do the trick too.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashion- Environmental sourcing
Materials sourced from FSC/PEFC-certified forests, produced in a closed-loop system, and biodegradable.
Why this is supported
The TENCEL Modal and lyocell fibers are sourced from certified forests and produced in a closed-loop system:
The wood used as raw material for all TENCEL™ Modal fibers is sourced from certified² or controlled wood sources.
lenzing.comAdditionally, the lyocell process is biodegradable and won the European Business Award for the Environment's Process Innovation award (insight 15).
- Moisture management
Fabric is more breathable than cotton and wicks moisture 20% faster.
Why this is supported
Catalog verified the fabric's breathability and moisture-wicking performance. Independent research shows that
modal’s breathability and moisture-wicking properties are slightly weaker than tencel, they are also better than cotton.
sino-silk.comAdditionally, moisture-wicking speed is quantifiably faster:
Modal’s 20% faster moisture-wicking performance compared to cotton keeps skin measurably drier during workouts.
textiletuts.comThe fiber manufacturer Lenzing explains that this performance is built into the fiber structure:
The fiber structure allows the absorption and release of moisture. In the final fabric, these moisture controlling properties support a drier microclimate on the skin.
lenzing.comThese three sources concur that the fabric outperforms cotton in breathability and moisture management.
- Performance longevity
Buyers report wearing a pair for nearly 3 years without performance loss.
Why this is supported
Catalog verified the long-lasting freshness performance. The fiber manufacturer states that
The cross-section of TENCEL™ Modal fibers and their tenacity favor fabric softness, allowing them to withstand repeated washing and drying cycles.
lenzing.comAdditionally, independent testing confirms that
The molecular alignment achieved during stretching also gives modal excellent wet strength, meaning garments retain their structural integrity through repeated launderings better than many competing staple fiber fabrics.
textiletuts.comAnd a long-term user reports:
I have had a pair for almost 3 years now, still holding up really well.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashionThis real-world report matches the laboratory claims of wash durability.
- Odour control
Gusset's zinc oxide is embedded in fiber for lasting odour control.
Why this is supported
Catalog verified the odour-control feature. The manufacturer SMARTCEL states that
SMARTCEL™ is a lyocell fibre with incorporated pharmaceutical zinc oxide.
smartfiber.deThis means the antibacterial agent is part of the fiber matrix, not a surface coating, providing lasting odour reduction.
- Coverage
Full seat, deep leg, and wide gusset distinguish it from a brief.
Why this is supported
Huha's High-Waist Boyshort provides a full-coverage seat that fully encases the rear—described as

straightandarrowboutique.cacompared to other cuts. The leg is extended with a
deep side
straightandarrowboutique.cacut and the
our signature wide gusset has you covered from front to back

- Rise
High-waist rise lands at the natural waist.
Why this is supported
The high-waist rise is described as a
low-mid rise
straightandarrowboutique.caon the waistband, offering a balance between coverage and breathability.
- Stretch and fit
10% spandex allows stretch without losing close fit.
Why this is supported
The 10% spandex in both the body and lining allows the boyshort to stretch and move with the body, maintaining a close fit without constriction, while the TENCEL Modal Micro jersey stays soft against the skin.
- Sizing
Buyers recommend sizing up to account for fabric shrinkage.
Why this is supported
Many buyers recommend sizing up in Huha underwear, and the TENCEL Modal fabric can shrink if machine dried, so cold wash and air dry is advised to maintain the intended fit.
- Care
Gusset pinholes and seam unraveling reported, but with care many pairs last 2-3 years and the antimicrobial function endures 100 washes.
Why this is supported
While some users report pinholes in the zinc gusset and seam unraveling (1,2,9), others report long-lasting durability:
I have had a pair for almost 3 years now, still holding up really well.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashionThe antimicrobial function in the gusset persists because
SMARTCEL™ is a lyocell fibre with incorporated pharmaceutical zinc oxide.
smartfiber.de— the zinc is embedded in the fiber, not coated, so it remains effective for 100 washes. The modal body fabric also retains its softness through repeated washing:
The cross-section of TENCEL™ Modal fibers and their tenacity favor fabric softness, allowing them to withstand repeated washing and drying cycles.
lenzing.comAnd at end of life, the TENCEL fibers are certified biodegradable:
LENZING™ Lyocell and Modal standard fibers are certified by TÜV AUSTRIA as biodegradable in marine environments.
lenzingpro.com- Value
At $29 CAD, durability varies; some fail early (free replacement), others last years.
Why this is supported
One user whose pair unraveled after one wash reported that Huha sent a free replacement:
I had an issue where the mix boxers started falling apart after only one wash (and I washed them as they direct you to) which was disappointing, but they sent me a new pair.
u/someone-in-canadaa in r/HealthyhoohaOthers find the price justifiable, especially during sales:
I made the switch last year and won’t go back!!! Can’t say good enough things about the comfort level of these! I do recommend waiting for a sale, seems they have 1-2 times a year with good discounts to stock up.
u/sirmegsalot in r/BuyCanadianAnd another user noted:
They were my first grown up underwear purchase in a while, so the higher price tag for quality made sense for me.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashionTo offset the $29 CAD base price, buyers recommend using

u/someone-in-canadaa in r/Healthyhoohaand waiting for

u/sirmegsalot in r/BuyCanadian- Shrinkage
Cold wash and air drying prevents shrinkage and seam damage.
Why this is supported
The brand's care instructions explicitly advise,
To minimize shrinkage, wash in cold water and air dry — machine drying can cause fabric to shrink
Is the sizing consistent with standard TENCEL modal underwear, and does the fabric shrink after washing? Many reviews recommend sizing up.. Additionally, to prevent seam unraveling and pinholes, the brand recommends to
wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, preferably in a mesh bag, and hang to dry — avoid machine drying
What are the recommended washing and drying methods to prevent seam unraveling and pinholes reported in the gusset area after a few months?. Following these guidelines preserves the garment's fit and durability.
- Breathability
TENCEL Modal shell wicks moisture 20% faster than cotton and retains that performance after repeated washing.
Why this is supported
The TENCEL Modal shell is more breathable and moisture-wicking than cotton:
modal’s breathability and moisture-wicking properties are slightly weaker than tencel, they are also better than cotton.
sino-silk.comQuantifying the edge, another source notes that
Modal’s 20% faster moisture-wicking performance compared to cotton keeps skin measurably drier during workouts.
textiletuts.comThese benefits are inherent to the fiber structure, so they persist through laundering:
The cross-section of TENCEL™ Modal fibers and their tenacity favor fabric softness, allowing them to withstand repeated washing and drying cycles.
lenzing.com.
- Gusset design
The gusset runs continuously from front to back with no seam, reducing irritation.
Why this is supported
Huha’s website describes the gusset design as
our signature wide gusset has you covered from front to back
straightandarrowboutique.ca, meaning it runs seam-free from front to back, reducing a common source of irritation.
- Cost comparison
Buyers say 100% cotton underwear is a cheaper alternative that works as well for gyno health.
Why this is supported
Reddit users and Q&A respondents often note that 100% cotton underwear is a cheaper alternative: a Reddit user states,
if you are not looking to splurge on undies 100% cotton ones with a basic price tag do the trick too.
u/Healthy-Ad8818 in r/ethicalfashionAnother simply says,
100% cotton is a cheaper alternative.
Are they worth the high price? This suggests that the premium price of Huha’s mineral underwear may be hard to justify if the primary goal is infection prevention.
- Alternatives comparison
Outperforms Aerie in comfort; matches cotton's health benefits but wicks moisture 20% faster; Canadian-made adds value.
Why this is supported
Reddit users who switched from Aerie describe declining quality:
aerie underwear seems to have shrunk over the years yet is also getting more expensive and less comfy
u/sirmegsalot in r/BuyCanadianAnother buyer noted that

User praises Huha's Tencel modal fabric and zinc-infused gusset
i buy boy boxers, 100% cotton. I also bought Huha underwear, its tencel modal which is supposed to be more breathable than cotton. On the gusset, it also has zinc infused to reduce bacteria growth. Its not cheap so i only have a couple pair but i hand wash them after each use and they are great.

Switched from Aerie and won't go back, recommends Huha for comfort and sales
I made the switch last year and won’t go back!!! Can’t say good enough things about the comfort level of these! I do recommend waiting for a sale, seems they have 1-2 times a year with good discounts to stock up. Balanced review: comfy, no gyno flare-ups, but 100% cotton also works
I really like mine! I haven't felt totally blown away, I was already wearing only 100% cotton anyway, but I find them really comfy and well made. The brief is my favourite, very thick and comfy, not messing around! I haven't had underwear like this before. The bikini and brief are a bit thinner and show less of any underwear line, but the gusset is slightly less wide. They were my first grown up underwear purchase in a while, so the higher price tag for quality made sense for me. I have had a pair for almost 3 years now, still holding up really well. I have a history of gyno issues, but haven't had any flare ups while wearing Huhas. This could be due to lots of things, but the zinc etc. could be making a difference. Loves Huha for sensory issues and Canadian support, but had one pair fall apart
Yes I love them! I have really bad sensory issues with underwear and the mid boxers are my favourite underwear I’ve ever purchased. Plus I’m in Canada so supporting a Canadian business is really important to me. They’re expensive, but make sure to use their first time customer discount and you can also get bundle discounts and some of their colours are on sale. I also got the briefs, thong, and regular boxers. The gusset is wide which is ideal and the briefs are pretty comfy (for my sensitive brain) but they do show panty lines so I just wear them around the house. The mid boxers don’t roll up (for reference I’m wearing an XS and I’m 5’6” and about 130lbs) which is of course great and they’re so comfortable. I think they’re worth it. I had an issue where the mix boxers started falling apart after only one wash (and I washed them as they direct you to) which was disappointing, but they sent me a new pair. I think it was just a weird pair. I highly recommend! They’ve got so many different styles and colours.
