Product Insights

The Owala Freesip Insulated Bottle 32 oz ($49, 4.3 stars) delivers all-day hydration with a dual-mode spout that lets you sip upright or chug using one hand, thanks to a spring-loaded push-button opening and a leakproof seal. Its lightweight (15.2 oz) powder-coated exterior provides a secure grip but may chip from cup holder friction (the steel body remains unaffected), and its 24-hour cold retention keeps ice lasting hours under direct sun. Replacement parts under $9 extend the bottle's life, offering a practical, high-performance water bottle that balances innovative functionality with a few durability caveats.

Spout design

Dual-mode spout lets you sip upright or chug without swapping lids.

Why this is supported

The spout's dual-channel design is described in the product material:

It features a spout that’s divided in half: one side a smaller opening with a built-in straw for controlled sipping and the other a wide mouth opening for fast access chugging.cleverhiker.com

The wide mouth is contoured

a larger opening for guzzling that conforms to the shape of the user’s mouth.owalalife.com

A spring-loaded cover seals the mouthpiece when closed and opens with a push-button.

the protective cover opens by pressing a button on the lid with a tightly wound spring that snaps it in place.cleverhiker.com
When closed, it keeps the mouthpiece protected and the bottle tightly sealed.cleverhiker.com

Users confirm the one-handed operation and sealed design:

The straw side is wider for faster flow:

The wider straw also means it feels almost like chugging even though it’s a straw.u/pesky_faerie in r/Owala

Comparatively, the dual-mode spout is a standout:

Freesip. The 32 oz fits my car cup holder. The ice stays ice longer in my owala than my yeti and other water bottles. It doesn’t leak.u/megatronsaurus in r/Owala
Patent

Protected by US design patent D863,877 issued 2019.

Why this is supported

The dual-mode lid is protected by a US design patent:

US patent D863,877, issued 2019-10-22en.wikipedia.org
Maintenance

Lid parts are dishwasher safe and replacement costs $1.99–$6.99.

Why this is supported

The lid disassembles for thorough cleaning:

The lid breaks into pieces — the straw lifts out, the lid itself comes apart — and everything fits in the dishwasher on the top rack.totallythebomb.com

Replacement parts are available at:

$6.99owalalife.com

, allowing users to restore the bottle without buying a new one.

Leakproof

Lid seals completely — no leaks even upside down.

Why this is supported

The lid is designed to be completely sealed when closed, a key differentiator from competitor straw bottles.

What makes Owala special is the lid. It's completely sealed (only Klean Kanteen can compete there, all the other straw lids flip open leaving the bottom half of the straw exposed when closed).u/weeone in r/Owala

This seal ensures no leaks even when tossed in a bag, as confirmed by users:

It doesn't leak.u/megatronsaurus in r/Owala

Additionally, the sealed design keeps the mouthpiece protected from dust and lint, reinforcing the hygiene benefit.

When closed, it keeps the mouthpiece protected and the bottle tightly sealed.cleverhiker.com
Dual-mode spout

Lid combines a straw and a chug opening in a single sealed spout.

Why this is supported

The lid houses both a built-in straw for sipping and a wide-mouth opening for chugging, all within the same sealed spout.

It features a spout that’s divided in half: one side a smaller opening with a built-in straw for controlled sipping and the other a wide mouth opening for fast access chugging.cleverhiker.com

This dual-mode design is protected by

US patent D863,877, issued 2019-10-22en.wikipedia.org

, confirming its proprietary nature.

Convenience

One-hand push-button opening and top-rack dishwasher-safe lid.

Why this is supported

The lid is designed for one-handed operation with a push-button mechanism:

Only need one hand to open (press the button) and it's easy to cleanu/weeone in r/Owala

For cleaning, the entire lid can be placed on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Insulation

Outperforms most bottles in cold retention.

Why this is supported

Good Housekeeping Institute lab testing quantified the FreeSip's insulation:

After one day, the water temperature only increased 13º, while some of the lesser performing water bottles increased more than 20º. For comparison, the best performing water bottles increased only 6º.goodhousekeeping.com

Remarkably, this performance was replicated in real-world conditions.

Despite a full day of sun exposure, the Owala kept our water cool for the entirety of the day.cleverhiker.com

Consumer reports further corroborate:

The ice stays ice longer in my owala than my yeti and other water bottles.u/megatronsaurus in r/Owala

Together, these sources confirm the bottle's insulation outperforms most competitors.

Powder coat

Provides secure grip but may chip from cup holder friction; steel unaffected.

Plastic taste

Buyers report a faint plastic taste that is eliminated by hand-washing the lid and straw before use.

Why this is supported

I seldom if ever write reviews, but as the first time I am making a purchase from Simons I found this to be a frustrating endeavor. I purchased two water bottles and they were so poorly packaged that they both sustained damage in transit. Customer service was a challenge- I had to send two emails and then call. I now have to drive them to the post office to return them, and was only offered a 20% discount if I go through the process to re-order (and wait another 7 days for delivery), placing another $100+ order while I manage the return of the damaged goods on my own. Lackluster overall experience, in future I will absolutely order elsewhere.

  • 32 oz Freesip fits cup holder and outperforms Yeti

Freesip. The 32 oz fits my car cup holder. The ice stays ice longer in my owala than my yeti and other water bottles. It doesn’t leak.

  • Sip mechanics are great but paint durability is weak

The sip mechanics does make it my favorite water bottle. Lots of parts to clean, easy to find replacement lids. The paint isn’t particularly strong but the steel is.

  • Straw makes drinking effortless and chug-like

I love that I don’t have to tip it back but don’t run into the issues I’ve had before with straw water bottles (where you try to drink and nothing comes up). The wider straw also means it feels almost like chugging even though it’s a straw.

  • Owala’s sealed lid is the standout feature over competitors

What makes Owala special is the lid. It's completely sealed (only Klean Kanteen can compete there, all the other straw lids flip open leaving the bottom half of the straw exposed when closed). Only need one hand to open (press the button) and it's easy to clean (a downfall with most straw lids)!

  • 32 oz size is perfect for heavy water drinkers

If you drink a lot of water, the 24oz is not for you. You will seriously be filling it up so many times throughout the day and it gets so frustrating. The 32oz is perfect in my opinion, it’s a good size/shape so it’s not annoying to use in public or anything.

  • 32 oz is great but doesn't fit cup holder; sip lid is easy

I have a 32 oz one and it's great because its not a tall bottle but it does not fit a cupholder. The sip lid is my favorite because drinking from it is so easy, just need to push a button and sip.
