Product Insights

Launched in August 2014 as Ciele's sole skate-inspired five-panel, the Gocap Solid has become a benchmark emulated by competitors, earning Best Overall in a 2026 test of 13 running hats. Knitted from 100% recycled polyester with COOLmatic|PLUS FLOWmesh, it weighs 55 g and offers a packable brim, shallow crown, and open back for ponytails. The cap provides UPF 40+ protection that improves with sweat, though seams may have lower UPF; it wicks moisture, dries in 2–3 hours, resists odor, and directs airflow via mesh panels. Available in two sizes for a dialed fit, its supple straight visor can be hand-curved for extra sun coverage. The tradeoff: at 55 g with UPF 40+, it is heavier than lighter alternatives (29 g) that only achieve UPF 25, but it justifies the premium with a lifetime warranty (Million Miles Guarantee), proven 1,000-mile durability, and top scores in breathability, wicking, and sun protection. Priced at $50 CAD, it is the only cap to score top marks in five categories with a lifetime warranty, making it a versatile running and casual hat that folds flat for travel.

Deep Research

The GOCap’s place as the original modern running cap

  • For the first time in the GOCap’s decade-long lineage, the Classic iteration introduces separate S/M (56.5 cm) and M/L (58 cm) sizes — a direct response to early adopter feedback about fit consistency that now makes the iconic silhouette accessible to a wider range of head shapes without resorting to a single stretch-to-fit strap.
  • The SOFTflat brim — pliable enough to stuff into a pocket or bag without creasing — was a key innovation from the first GOCap, solving a fundamental runner complaint about hats that couldn’t travel flat; it remains the defining structural feature of the current Solid model, now refined for improved comfort.
  • Every GOCap, from the original to this Solid edition, is backed by the Million Miles Guarantee — a lifetime warranty that reflects founder Jeremy Bresnen’s insistence that these hats be washed and worn repeatedly, akin to a piece of equipment rather than a disposable accessory.
  • While most running hats of the era used woven fabrics, the original GOCap was built from a moisture-wicking knit that gave it inherent stretch and a softer hand — that early material choice set a standard for lightweight, next-to-skin comfort that the current COOLmatic | PLUS FLOWmesh iteration continues to uphold at just 55 grams.
  • Ciele Athletics debuted with just the GOCap, a hat designed to be equally at home on a run and off — within a decade the company sold over a million caps, turning a single accessory into a global benchmark for running headwear.
  • The GOCap’s five-panel silhouette and flat brim trace back to 1990s skateboarding rather than traditional baseball-cap design — a deliberate move by founder Jeremy Bresnen, a longtime skateboarder, to create a performance hat that runners could wear without feeling like they were in team-issue gear.
  • Founder Jeremy Bresnen’s vision that the GOCap should work for running but also ‘for not running’ was validated almost immediately when early adopters posted photos of themselves wearing the cap in mountain settings and, equally, in everyday life — that cross-context versatility is why the cap has been adopted by a community that treats it as an identity piece, not just gear.

How UPF 40+ protection works in a 55g cap

  • Unlike SPF-rated sunscreens that are calibrated mainly to UVB, the cap’s UPF rating covers both UVA and UVB — UVA penetrates deeper and drives photoaging, so the UPF 40+ fabric offers broader protection against long-term skin damage.
  • A 2022 laboratory study on 100% polyester sportswear fabrics found that water or sweat saturation increased UV protection factors by over 20%, so the cap’s sun protection actually peaks when a runner is sweating mid-effort.
  • Under AATCC 183, UPF 40–50+ is the highest classification (Excellent), meaning the cap’s fabric transmits at most 2.5% of ultraviolet radiation — effectively the same protection tier as many heavier UPF 50+ garments.

How the GOCap stacks up against Fractel, Janji, and other top caps

  • In Treeline Review's 2026 test of 14 running hats spanning weight, breathability, moisture wicking, sun protection, packability, and fit, the GOCap was the only hat to score top marks across every dimension, with the tester logging over 1,000 miles in a single GOCap before retirement.
  • The GOCap debuted in 2014, making it the original technical running cap that spawned a category now filled with derivatives—its five-panel frame, soft brim, and reflective details established the blueprint adopted by Fractel, Janji, and others.
  • Reddit runners frequently note that the Fractel M-Series cap is nearly identical to the GOCap—a recognition of the Ciele’s design influence, but Fractel’s version lacks the GOCap’s lifetime warranty and nine-year brand heritage that validate the original’s staying power.
  • At $50 CAD ($45 USD), the GOCap sits above budget options like the $25 Headsweats, but the lifetime warranty effectively turns it into a one-time purchase—a detail that Treeline Review explicitly called out as a significant value-add over most competitors.
  • At 55 grams with UPF 40+ protection, the GOCap weighs almost twice as much as the 29 g Janji AFO Hyperlight Cap, but the Janji carries only a UPF 25 rating—meaning the GOCap trades a few grams for full UV coverage suited to multi-hour exposure, while the Janji is built for runners who prioritize near-nothingness over sun protection.

Breathability and moisture control of COOLmatic fabric

  • An antimicrobial treatment embedded in the COOLmatic | PLUS knit inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria, meaning the cap can endure multiple sweaty runs before picking up a lasting funk — a practical advantage for daily runners who don’t want to wash it after every single outing.
  • At 55 grams, the cap is borderline weightless, and the COOLmatic | PLUS material's fast-drying nature means it won’t turn into a heavy, sweat-soaked sponge — it can go from drenched during a workout to dry within hours just sitting on a counter, eliminating the need for a dryer and making it a reliable daily driver.
  • The fabric’s hydrophobic finish actively pushes moisture away from the skin and onto the surface for evaporation, using capillary action more akin to a technical running tee than a basic mesh hat — so sweat is managed before it can saturate the headband, keeping the forehead drier during intervals.

Ciele’s design roots and Montreal running culture

  • The GOCap’s five-panel shape and flat unstructured brim are borrowed from skateboarding, not track-and-field headwear, which gives it a casual, street-ready silhouette that pairs as naturally with a hoodie as with high-mileage running kit — this design choice is what lets the hat cross over from workout essential to everyday accessory without looking out of place.
  • Ciele deliberately built the GOCap around a soft flat brim that can go through a washing machine in a laundry bag and resists deformation, so runners can toss a sweat-soaked cap in with the rest of their kit without worrying about warping the bill — this practical durability is engineered in, not an afterthought.
  • Ciele’s guiding belief that ‘commitment comes before love’ — articulated by co-founder Jeremy Bresnen, who didn’t start running until his late thirties — shapes the GOCap as an approachable entry point: a hat that looks and feels good enough to wear every day, making those early, difficult weeks of running a little easier to show up for.
  • Ciele Athletics debuted in August 2014 with a single product, the GOCap, which has since moved over a million units — a trajectory that validates the original design idea of a running hat that doesn’t look like a running hat, and signals to a new buyer that the GOCap’s aesthetic has been refined by more than a decade of real-world use and feedback.

Why the 5-panel design matters for runners

  • At 55 grams, the GOCap weighs roughly half as much as a standard cotton six‑panel cap, a weight savings attributable to the five‑panel pattern’s elimination of a full fabric triangle and its seam — for a long‑run or race‑day accessory, that difference translates to a cap you genuinely forget you’re wearing, reducing perceived neck strain over hours.
  • Ciele introduced performance running‑specific five‑panels in 2014, establishing the GOCap as the template for the modern runner’s hat; a decade later, in a 2026 cross‑brand test of 28 hats, it was named “Best Overall” for its unmatched balance of breathability, wicking, sun protection, packability, and fit, cementing it as the benchmark against which competitors measure themselves.
  • By removing one panel and its converging seams, the five‑panel design reduces potential friction zones against the forehead compared to a traditional six‑panel hat, a detail that becomes critical during sweaty, multi‑hour efforts where a sharp central seam or top button can create a hotspot.
  • The five‑panel layout’s horizontal symmetry lets Ciele hybridize its COOLmatic PLUS front panel with FLOWmesh side and rear panels, placing the highest airflow zones exactly where sweat and heat build up along the temples and occiput — a directional ventilation strategy that a uniform six‑panel crown cannot execute without visual awkwardness.
  • The GOCap’s five‑panel construction and soft, unsupported brim allow it to be folded or crushed into a pocket without permanent creasing, a trait that evolved from the crushable cycling caps of the early ’90s and that makes it a favorite for runners who want a hat they can stash or pack for travel.
  • A hallmark of the five‑panel silhouette is its shallower crown that sits closer to the skull, which keeps the GOCap planted during trail runs through overhanging branches and gusty conditions — a functional edge over deeper 6‑panel “dad hats” that can billow or catch wind.

Sustainability and long-term wear of REPREVE recycled polyester

  • REPREVE fabric inherently blocks UV radiation, meaning the GOCap's UPF 40+ sun protection is built into the fiber itself and will not wash out or degrade with repeated laundering — unlike caps that rely on topical chemical coatings that fade over time.
  • REPREVE fibers absorb almost no water with a moisture regain of just 0.4% per ASTM D1909, so the cap dries quickly after sweat‑soaked runs and resists the long‑term fiber damage and odor retention tied to prolonged moisture exposure.
  • The SOFTflat brim is engineered to be folded and packed without creasing or breaking, so the cap can be stuffed into a pocket or bag and emerge with its shape intact — a practical durability advantage for travel that most unstructured caps lack.
  • Ciele backs the GOCap with its 'million miles guarantee' against manufacturing defects, publicly signaling confidence in long‑term build quality and providing a safety net that reinforces the cap's reputation for withstanding hard running use.
  • REPREVE filament yarns deliver a tenacity of 4.0–5.5 cN/dtex, well within the range needed for tear resistance in active headwear; the GOCap can endure repeated pulling, doffing, and wind without ripping, even at its ultra-lightweight 55 g construction.

  • Ciele quality is unmatched but styles limited

I will add that Ciele makes the best quality visors out there. I've tried many brands, but the quality and longevity of Ciele visors is unmatched. Which is a shame, as they don't have all that many styles, and I wish others would make some good ones.

  • 5-panel hats have similar design and sourcing

It's a 5 panel run hat, not a ton of variation in design. Ancillary parts like the plastic buckle are probably sourced from the same vendors.

  • Multiple Ciele hats bought for looks, quality, and casual wear

I bought one and now have 3. They are pricey, but IMO the best looking sports hats out there and the quality is very decent. They’re also very breathable and soft brim is great for travelling and washing. I wear two of them as causal hats for when I can’t be bothered to do my hair and they’re so comfortable. I wore a standard cotton baseball cap the other day in the heat and forgot how uncomfortable they are.

  • Ciele naming conventions and brim characteristics explained

if on the Ciele website, it says SC in the name then that means the bill is curved. I’m not sure if you can go full dad cap, but it’s neutral is at least a small curve, while no SC in the name means the bill should be straight. GoCap has a longer bill, Alz is shorter. I love their AlzCap, specifically the ones with the small logos, but damn their naming nomenclature sucks.

  • GOCap fits well, FastCap more wicking, both excellent

I've got two fastcaps and one gocap. The fastcap has a bit more wicking material. That said the gocap actually ended up fitting me better. I rotate through all three. They're easily the best hats I've owned. I do hand wash them but they don't smell for a long time even after they get drenched with sweat.
