Product Insights
The Adidas Originals Coffee-Brown Handball Spezial for women revives an unchanged 1979 handball design with T-toe overlay and gum sole, adopted by UK terrace casuals and revived as a collectible. This women's-exclusive Femme edition offers a softer neutral colorway that develops unique patina over time. The raised arch footbed from the original brief provides support but is often swapped for orthotics, while the thin forefoot sole prioritizes ground feel over cushioning. Buyers report exceptional all-day comfort, more than the Samba, though the shoe runs large and is slim-fitting – suede stretches to accommodate wider feet. The soft natural-rubber outsole provides excellent dry traction but wears faster than the suede upper, creating a tradeoff between authenticity and durability. An extra set of laces and subtle tongue texture add to the insider appeal of this scarce, versatile terrace shoe.

Deep Research
Design lineage from 1979 to today
- The T-toe overlay — a suede forefoot cap that visually ties into the Three-Stripes — was originally a structural reinforcement for handball's hard stops and pivots, and its continued presence on the current Aurora Coffee directly signals the 1979 original, making it the Spezial's most instant recognition point within adidas Originals.
- The Handball Spezial debuted in 1979 as a purpose-built indoor court shoe engineered for the rapid cuts and grip demands of elite European handball, with a low-profile gum rubber cupsole designed to be thin and close to the ground for court feel — which means the current slim silhouette directly inherits that performance brief, not retro styling.
- The original sole featured a four-zone tread pattern for multidirectional grip on indoor courts, and today's translucent gum outsole retains that design logic; it prioritizes flexibility and ground feel over thick cushioning, which is why the Spezial rides firmer and lower than modern court-derived sneakers.
- This women's-exclusive Aurora Coffee edition pairs a rich brown cow suede with delicate Sandy Pink stripes and gold-tone Spezial lettering — a palette drawn from early-1980s adidas color blocking but executed with almost no black, giving it a softer, fashion-forward identity that stands apart from the traditional black/white/gum Spezials.
- By the mid-1980s the Handball Spezial had been adopted by British football terrace casuals who bought European adidas sneakers to stand out at home; the shoe's understated silhouette and tonal colorways made it a blank canvas for club allegiance, a subcultural history that separates the Spezial from purely athletic retro lines.
- The Handball Spezial's design has remained architecturally untouched since 1979: the reinforced heel panel, high-traction rubber outsole, and T-toe shape are the same today as on the original — making this a truly archival silhouette rather than a re-imagined retro, and the reason it delivers an authenticity that updated designs cannot replicate.
How long the gum rubber sole lasts
- Because the gum compound was formulated for indoor court grip rather than outdoor abrasion resistance, everyday use on sidewalks and asphalt causes the sole to smooth out well before the tough suede upper shows any damage — the sole is the limiting factor in the shoe's lifespan.
- The Spezial's gum sole is a natural-rubber cupsole that trades long-wearing abrasion resistance for the high traction and board feel demanded by indoor handball — on rough city pavement, the softer compound wears down noticeably faster than the synthetic rubber blends used in many modern street trainers.
Suede or nubuck: what the upper actually is
- Being unsanded cow suede, the upper will naturally darken and gain character in high-wear areas, creating a unique patina that gives the Aurora Coffee colorway a personalized depth — a key aesthetic differentiator from more uniform, corrected-grain leathers or synthetic suedes.
- The suede upper exhibits high plasticity, meaning it will stretch and mold to the foot over time — this is why the Spezial, despite a slim initial profile, is often the widest-fitting among the Samba, Gazelle, and Spezial trio, making it a forgiving choice for wider feet after break-in.
- The suede upper is very durable and will often outlast the soft gum rubber outsole, which is designed for indoor grip rather than abrasion resistance — for the buyer, this means the shoe takes on a vintage look as the sole smooths out while the upper remains intact, aligning perfectly with the retro terrace aesthetic.
Women’s‑only color palette and its meaning
- This IH1507 is part of the Handball Spezial Femme collection, a women’s-exclusive line that recalibrates the 1970s indoor handball model by trading the bright primary suedes of earlier Spezials for delicate, pastel-tinged neutrals — the Aurora Coffee base with Sandy Pink stripes being a prime example — reflecting adidas’s stated commitment to democratizing its sporting classics through softer color palettes.
Why the aggressive arch support exists
- The word 'Spezial' was lifted from adidas' 1960s performance catalog, a designation reserved for specialized athletic shoes — so the arch support isn't a design quirk, but part of a technical creed that predates the model itself, reinforcing that this was built as a serious court trainer.
- The Spezial's raised arch is a direct carryover from the shoe's original 1979 brief to support elite handball players during rapid lateral cuts and leaps — a functional element that would be absent in a purely lifestyle retro, and which anchors the model's claim to genuine sporting heritage.
- Among the three classic adidas terrace silhouettes — Samba, Gazelle, Spezial — only the Spezial includes a raised arch mound in the footbed; the Samba and Gazelle are flat, making the Spezial's arch the single feature that most directly connects it back to its indoor-court performance origins.
- The gum outsole's four-zone tread pattern — designed for the hard multi-directional turns of handball — forms a stability partnership with the raised arch, meaning the arch doesn't work alone; it's part of a system engineered to keep the foot locked during aggressive lateral movement, even if it feels overbuilt for casual use today.
- Widespread use by professional players at the World Handball Championships shortly after launch validates that the Spezial's full feature set — including the pronounced arch — was battle-tested in top-level competition, not just a marketing checklist.
Terrace culture and the Spezial story
- Crucially, the current Handball Spezial retains the same design pillars — the suede upper, T-toe, perforation holes, and gum sole — as the 1979 original, meaning this is a near-direct descendant of the shoe that walked the terraces and therefore carries an unbroken visual lineage that modern reinterpretations cannot replicate.
- The Handball Spezial debuted in 1979 as a purpose-built indoor handball shoe engineered with a gum rubber cupsole for grip and lateral stability, so its design carries legitimate athletic DNA that distinguishes it from fashion-first retro sneakers and gives the silhouette an authenticity rooted in sport rather than marketing.
- The Handball Spezial’s return to prominence was driven by Gary Aspden’s 2013 project to revive the Spezial name, leveraging his deep personal connection to terrace and football culture to re-present the silhouette as a collectible artifact instead of a casual reissue — wearing a pair today aligns you with that considered, archival mindset rather than a mainstream trend cycle.
- Spezial’s cult following rests on what has been called a ‘mass-produced secret’ — a deliberately low-key approach that rewards insider knowledge over conspicuous branding, and the brown Handball Spezial exemplifies this by operating as a quiet fashion-insider signifier rather than a shoe that announces itself.
- During the 1980s, UK football casuals adopted the Handball Spezial as part of their match-day uniform alongside the Samba and Gazelle, cementing it as one of the era’s defining terrace sneakers — today that shared lineage means it carries the same authentic subcultural cachet as those silhouettes but is less saturated, making it a more discerning choice for those who understand the reference.

Great Colour - Great Quality and fit
I've been thinking about these shoes for awhile and very happy with them. I find many street shoes too wide but these are a slim fit so they're perfect for me.

Q&A
8 answered- Is the arch support built into the removable footbed, and can I replace it with my own orthotic?
- Yes, the arch support is built into the removable foam footbed, and you can replace it with your own orthotic. We've seen customers do this to address arch discomfort.
- How does the suede upper hold up against water and stains? Does it require special treatment?
- Suede is naturally porous and not water-resistant, so it can stain easily. We recommend treating the upper with a suede protector spray before wear and avoiding wet conditions to maintain its appearance.
- Is this shoe available in a wide width option?
- This style is not available in wide width; the fit is considered slim. For wider feet, we suggest sizing up half to a full size for a better fit.
- How does the gum rubber outsole perform on wet or slippery surfaces? Is the 'non-skid' claim reliable?
- The gum rubber outsole provides good traction on dry surfaces, but performance on wet or slippery surfaces may be limited. The 'non-skid' claim is a general description, not a formal slip-resistance rating, so we recommend caution on slick floors.
- How to fix the aggressive arch support?
- Remove the sticky foam padding from the insole or replace the insole entirely.
- Are Handball Spezials comfortable for long walks?
- Mixed experiences; some find them comfortable, but the thin sole under the ball of the foot can be a problem. Upgraded insoles may help.
- How does the sizing run?
- True to size for most, but considered slim. Half to full size up recommended for wide feet.
- How does it compare to Samba or Gazelle?
- A stylish alternative; often considered more versatile than Samba, but personal preference varies.
Reddit Insights
6 threads · r/adidas, r/RepsneakersDogsReddit users generally appreciate the Handball Spezial for its style and versatility, though the aggressive arch support and thin sole are polarizing; the brown colorway is seen as a stylish 'it' shoe.
Positive sentiments praise the silhouette, colorways, and build quality, while negative sentiments focus on the uncomfortable arch support and thin footbed. Overall, the model is liked but has notable comfort caveats.

General impressions and comparisons
Nicer than the Samba, not as nice as the Gazelle indoor. But probably the best adidas shoe to match with almost anything.

Colorway preferences and outfit matching
I have the dark brown ones. They go with a lot of my outfits, for some reason I find olive green harder to match, despite loving green shoes.

Arch support frustration and removal advice
The “arch support” in these is ridiculous. It’s like a random wad of tissues lodged under your foot. I recommend ripping the sticky foam padding out of the insoles. If you heat the insoles with a hairdryer it peels right off. You will be glad you did it.

Comfort assessment for walking and travel
I love my Spezials, I have 10 pairs and they are extremely comfortable. I wore mine around Europe last summer and I was fine. The arch support was a welcome feature for all that walking. However, the sole under the ball of the foot is a bit thin and that can be hard for some people.

In-hand review of brown Handball Spezial
The upper is this beautiful rough suede. The white stripes and heel tab are cut and stitched very well. No obvious errors or glue stains. The blue shoebox came with an extra set of brown laces. The original laces are the better pick out of the two in my opinion.
