Product Insights
The Dense Crepe Shoulder Pads Crossover Vest by Icône is an architectural standalone piece built from recycled polyester crepe that matches virgin polyester in texture, weight, and durability while cutting CO2 by 32% and energy use by 59%. It costs $79 CAD, the same as conventional alternatives, and includes a hidden side zip and satiny lining for quality under $100. The Canadian-fit block ensures good shoulder fit, though broader shoulders should size up; the dense crepe locks pads in place for a crisp V-shape. Its core promise is a structured, design-first vest with a crossover neck and pointed hem that serves as a blazer substitute for office wear. The main tradeoff is its limited layering compatibility: designed only for thin tops and turtlenecks—not blazers or bulky knits—and requiring dry cleaning, which complicates pairing with items needing frequent washing.

Deep Research
What to know about the Icône brand
- Icône pieces are developed in Canada, which typically means fit blocks are calibrated for North American bodies; for a structured vest with fixed shoulder pads, this reduces the likelihood of shoulder width or armhole placement feeling off compared to proportioning done abroad for different markets.
- The dense crepe's characteristic crinkled hand and recovery memory give the vest enough body to hold the pointed hem and built-in shoulder pads in place through a workday — characteristics borrowed from blazer-weight fabrics rather than the thin polyesters used in casual vest competitors, so it reads as structured office layering, not a jersey shell.
- Within the Simons private-label portfolio, Icône occupies the contemporary tier above Twik (youthful, trend-driven) and Le 31 (core basics), competing with Contemporaine in sophistication but leaning further into architectural silhouettes — the crossover neckline and pointed hem are direct expressions of that design-first approach.
- The entire crepe shell is made from recycled plastic bottles, integrating post-consumer materials into a permanent mainline offering rather than a one-off capsule — putting sustainability into the garment without the typical eco-collection premium, a hallmark of Icône's commitment to accessible responsible materials.
- A hidden side zip and full satiny lining are interior finishing details that often disappear in vests under $100 to cut costs; their presence here signals that Icône treats the inside of the garment as seriously as the silhouette — a quality marker experienced shoppers use to separate solid construction from fast-fashion shortcuts.
The sustainability and feel of recycled polyester
- Recycled polyester fibers are engineered to match the round cross-section and smooth hand of virgin polyester, so the dense stretch crepe retains the dry, crisp texture and weight that give the vest its sharp, padded structure — sustainable sourcing does not compromise the intended esthetic.
- Recycled polyester production uses approximately 59% less energy and emits about 32% less CO₂ compared to virgin polyester manufacturing, giving this vest a significantly lighter carbon footprint from fiber creation to finished textile.
- Because all polyester sheds microplastic fibers in the wash, pairing this vest with a Guppyfriend bag or washing on a cold, gentle cycle captures a majority of loose fibers, letting eco-conscious buyers manage the primary environmental trade-off of synthetic fabrics.
- Standard mechanical recycling melts and re-extrudes PET without degrading the polymer, yielding a fiber with tensile strength comparable to virgin polyester; for the thick crepe, this means the same resistance to stretching, pilling, and wearing thin as a conventional polyester vest.
- The fabric begins as rPET flake from recycled plastic bottles, diverting waste from landfills and oceans while reducing the need for virgin petroleum — a closed-loop input that directly lowers the garment's environmental impact at the raw-materials stage.

Q&A
4 answered- How does the built-in shoulder pads affect the fit? Should I size up if I have broader shoulders?
- The built-in shoulder pads add structure and definition to the shoulders, which can make the shoulder area appear broader. If you have broader shoulders, we recommend sizing up for a more comfortable fit, especially in the shoulders and chest.
- Can this vest be machine washed or is dry cleaning recommended?
- We recommend dry cleaning this vest due to the thin satiny lining and structured shoulder pads. While the polyester shell is durable, the lining and construction are best preserved with professional care.
- How stretchy is the crepe fabric? Does it have enough give for comfortable movement?
- Yes, the crepe fabric is described as 'stretch crepe,' so it has a good amount of give for comfortable movement. The polyester blend adds flexibility while maintaining the garment's shape.
- Is this vest designed to be worn over blazers or as a standalone piece? What is the intended layering?
- This vest is designed primarily as a standalone piece due to its structured build, built-in shoulder pads, and pointed hem. While it can be layered over thin tops or turtlenecks, it is not intended to be worn over blazers as the shoulder pads may add bulk.
