The Rains Long Raincoat is a knee-length, waterproof jacket for urban commuting and wet weather, made with a lightweight matte-finish waterproof fabric, ultrasonically welded seams, a snap-button front placket, flap pockets, adjustable cuffs, underarm eyelets, and a hood with visor. User feedback notes it provides reliable rain protection in downpours but lacks breathability, which can lead to sweating during active use, and is heavier and less packable than performance rain jackets. Some reviewers also report durability concerns over time, making it best suited for city wear rather than hiking or strenuous outdoor activities.

Product Insights

Rains' Long Raincoat is a design heritage piece unchanged since 2012, ubiquitous in Copenhagen, offering a minimalist, unisex silhouette with ultrasonic welded seams and a matte finish for urban commuting in wet weather. Its lightweight W3-rated 180g fabric (4000mm) keeps commuters dry in downpours, but lacks breathability, causing sweating in mild rain. The unlined interior requires layering; size down for a tailored fit. While the PU coating can last 4+ years with cold washing and air-drying out of UV, it may degrade in a year without proper care or peel/crack over time. Users report shoulder seam leakage in prolonged heavy rain, and the 95–105 cm length limits packability for travel. Best for cool, wet climates and bike or transit commutes, not for hiking or active use. The long coat covers the lower back; the snap closure may pop open. Muted neutral colors and a 2-year warranty complete the package.

Design heritage

Coat design dates to 2012, remains unchanged, and is ubiquitous in Copenhagen.

Fit

Waterproof rating

Lightweight 180g fabric rated W3 (4000mm) keeps commuters dry in downpours and rainy cities.

Why this is supported

The coat has a W3 light-rain classification and a hydrostatic head of

Coating care

PU coating may degrade in a year if not properly maintained; avoid heat/UV.

Why this is supported

The polyurethane coating that makes the fabric waterproof is not permanent. One source states it

Packability

The 95–105 cm length limits packability; suitable for daily carry but not for travel.

Why this is supported

The jacket measures 95–105 cm from shoulder to hem,

Dimensions: XS - XXL, length 95 - 105 cm / 37.4 - 41.3 inchesoutoria.com

which prevents compact folding. The 180 g/m² PU-coated polyester fabric is lighter than traditional rubber rainwear—

Lightweight and low profile for comfort and packabilityoutoria.com

—but the long cut and full coverage mean it occupies as much space as a folded trench coat. Reddit and Q&A users unanimously describe it as heavy and not packable, with one reviewer stating

it felt heavier than one of the Patagonia jacketsu/skipdog98 in r/onebag

, and another calling it

like wearing a pretty tarpaulinu/josemartinlopez in r/malefashionadvice

. Therefore, while it works for daily commutes where the coat is worn most of the time, it is a poor choice for backpacking or one-bag travel.

Waterproof performance

W3-rated jacket repels heavy downpour but users report shoulder seam leakage in prolonged use.

Why this is supported

The Long Raincoat's official specification rates it W3 for light rain with a 4,000 mm hydrostatic head.

Waterproof rating: W3watchwear.eu
RAINS “Long Jacket” is manufactured in 180 g PU-coatet Polyester with MATTE surface and a water resistance of at least 4,000 mm (4 m H²O).nordic-rainwear.com

Independent testing found it survived an hour of heavy downpour with no moisture ingress, indicating real-world performance exceeds the rating.

It features W3 waterproof protection from light rain but we did try it out in heavier conditions and it offered great protection, with no penetration at all after an hour in a downpour.outoria.com

The seams are ultrasonically welded to eliminate stitch holes, which adds strength, but some users have reported shoulder seam leakage in prolonged heavy rain.

Coating longevity

PU coating lasts 4+ years when washed cold and air-dried out of direct UV.

Why this is supported

Rains provides multiple care guidelines to preserve the PU coating: machine wash cold (30°C) with the jacket turned inside out, air dry away from direct sunlight, and iron only with a cotton pressing cloth on low heat.

Use a cold water programme (30°C / 85°F).au.rains.com

Direct UV exposure and storing the jacket damp can cause coating peeling or cracking, so complete drying in the shade is crucial.

Direct sunlight can cause the PU coating to crack or peel.grundens.com

A long-term user reports the coat stays functional and good-looking after more than 4 years of daily use in rainy climates.

Rains are the perfect rain jackets imo. Got mine when my usual rain coat (which survived Netherlands weather!) couldn’t cut it in the incessant Danish rain, and it’s been the best purchase of the last 4 years.u/_skylark in r/femalefashionadvice
Warranty

2-year warranty and no own-channel discounts.

Why this is supported

Rains backs the Long Raincoat with a standard 2-year warranty and a policy of never discounting through its own channels, signaling confidence in long-term quality.

All of our products have a 2 year warranty as standard. Furthermore, we never go into sale through any of our own channels.libertylondon.com
Machine washing

Machine wash cold with inside-out; hand-wipe for light soil.

Why this is supported

Rains' official care guide permits machine washing on a cold (30°C) cycle and instructs:

Turn the jacket inside out to protect the PU-coated surface.au.rains.com

For light soiling, a simpler method is recommended:

Clean with a damp cloth and mild soapHow should the Rains Long Raincoat be cleaned and maintained? Does the polyurethane coating degrade over time?
Drying and storage

Air-dry thoroughly; avoid tumble drying and direct sunlight.

Why this is supported

The PU coating is sensitive to heat; the guide specifically warns to

Never use a dryer or expose your outerwear to high heat, as this can damage the coating.grundens.com

Instead, air drying is essential:

Hang to air dry completely before storing to prevent mould or mildew.au.rains.com

Also, direct sunlight should be avoided because

Direct sunlight can cause the PU coating to crack or peel.grundens.com

This combination of air drying fully and storing away from UV light preserves the coating.

Ironing

Iron on low; use a cotton pressing cloth on the outside.

Why this is supported

The care guide permits ironing on low heat. For the outside, it recommends to

place a cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric to protect the waterproof functionality.au.rains.com
Coating degradation

PU coating can peel or crack after regular use over time.

Why this is supported

The care Q&A notes that, even with proper maintenance, the coating naturally degrades over time:

The polyurethane coating can peel or crack with regular useDoes the polyurethane coating on the Rains Long Raincoat peel or crack with regular use?
Use case

Designed for urban rain commutes, not for hiking or active outdoor use.

Why this is supported

User reviews position Rains as a brand for urban commuting:

RAINS is a Scandinavian brand designed to for people to bike/public transit commute in really wet, windy weather.u/kneadandread in r/hiking

In the fashion raincoat segment, it is lighter and more affordable than Stutterheim, described as

Rains is like wearing a pretty tarpaulin.u/josemartinlopez in r/malefashionadvice

Compared to Patagonia, it

felt heavier than one of the Patagonia jackets.u/skipdog98 in r/onebag

These comparisons confirm its target use: urban commuting, not outdoor mobility.

Style

Welded seams and matte finish give a modern, architectural look distinct from traditional rain jackets.

Why this is supported

The coat's design is characterized by its ultrasonically welded seams, which

This aligns with the Scandinavian design philosophy:

To be Scandinavian is to edit, edit, edit – to take an idea to its core, its simplest place and work from there.designweek.co.uk

As a result, the coat fits trends like gorpcore and quiet luxury, as noted by Vogue.

Durability

PU coating may peel or crack over time, reducing longevity compared to outdoor brands.

Why this is supported

Maintenance guidance warns that

The polyurethane coating can degrade over time, especially with exposure to heat or improper care. Some users report deterioration within a year. How should the Rains Long Raincoat be cleaned and maintained? Does the polyurethane coating degrade over time?

Additionally,

The polyurethane coating can peel or crack with regular use, especially if not properly maintained.Does the polyurethane coating on the Rains Long Raincoat peel or crack with regular use?

This contrasts with technical outdoor brands known for long-term durability.

Urban use cases

Buyers use it for bike commuting and festivals in wet, windy weather; long length covers lower back; snap closure may pop open.

Why this is supported

Reddit users identify the coat as designed for

bike/public transit commute in really wet, windy weather.u/kneadandread in r/hiking

and one user notes owning three versions including a dedicated festival one:

I currently have 3, a festival one, a dark colour for winter and a light colour for summer (I live in Galway).u/KaleSeitan333 in r/WomenofIreland

The long length and snap-button placket are tailored for cycling, but the lack of a zipper means

, indicating a tradeoff for some users.

Hiking unsuitability

Not suitable for hiking; the PU coating and boxy cut restrict mobility and cause overheating.

Why this is supported

Users consistently advise against using this coat for hiking. One redditor states,

I also have a Patagonia raincoat that I use for hiking because it works better for the mobility you need while hiking.u/kneadandread in r/hiking

, and another describes it as

Rains is like wearing a pretty tarpaulin.u/josemartinlopez in r/malefashionadvice

, emphasizing its unsuitability for active outdoor use.

Climatic limitation

Best suited for cool, wet climates; uncomfortable in warm or humid weather due to lack of breathability.

Why this is supported

The coat's breathability limits its use to cooler climates. As the same user notes,

I sweat so much in itu/techy99m in r/AusFemaleFashion

, indicating discomfort in any warmth. It is optimal for cool, rainy urban conditions.

Downpour performance

Survives a one-hour heavy downpour with no water penetration, exceeding its light-rain rating.

Why this is supported

Independent testing showed

great protection, with no penetration at all after an hour in a downpour.outoria.com

. The PU membrane provides

water resistance of at least 4,000 mm (4 m H²O).nordic-rainwear.com

, contributing to this unexpected performance.

Care requirements

Requires proper storage and washing (cold wash, air dry, shade) to preserve PU coating.

Why this is supported

The PU coating degrades with UV and heat. Official care instructions allow machine washing:

If your rain jacket needs more than a surface refresh, it can be machine washed.au.rains.com

. However, shade storage and low-heat care are recommended to extend its functional lifespan.

Layering

Lightweight, linerless shell layers over a t-shirt or a chunky sweater.

Why this is supported

Buyers report the coat has no lining, making it easy to layer:

I love that they’re light, dry quickly and essentially have no lining so I can throw it over anything and wear it even in summer rainu/_skylark in r/femalefashionadvice

. Another user finds it

very light so great for throwing over a big jumperu/KaleSeitan333 in r/WomenofIreland

.

Color

Muted neutral colors allow seasonal styling.

Why this is supported

The color range allows buyers to coordinate with different seasons and occasions:

I currently have 3, a festival one, a dark colour for winter and a light colour for summeru/KaleSeitan333 in r/WomenofIreland

. The available colors are Black, Khaki/Sage/Olive, Blue-Grey, and Silver.

This is a nice weight for a rain jacket, folds up nicely. My only issue is the snap closures on the wrist either make the sleeves very tight or super loose. The body is roomy, I wear a size small comfortably with a large hoodie underneath.

Stylist and actually works!

Hannah T.

I've been searching for the right rainjacket for so long and finally found it. I'm the long and lanky type, so 90% of the rainjackets out there will have arms too short for me, its the first thing I look, but this jacket was perfect and actually left me with some of the cuff past my wrists! Its a miracle! I love the colour and most importantly, it keeps me dry. My only complaint would be that the closure is only snap buttons. While they are stylist and cute, it takes a fair amout of time to button up them all. I wish there was a zipper closure along with the buttons for extra security and ease

Really happy with the look of this raincoat! I originally ordered a medium, I found it too big so I exchange it for a small. Looking forward to trying it out in the west-coast rain to see how it performs

Great quality raincoat!

Loved the fabric and the color (green) , not heavyweight just perfect for a good rain protection; would pack well too for traveling. Unfortunately I had to returned ad the pockets fall too low fir my height (5’3 ) and the sleeves would need challenging alterations due to snaps. I would recommend to a taller person for an ideal fit.

vs Patagonia

Patagonia is favored for outdoor activities due to better breathability and mobility; Rains is seen as more stylish but less functional for hiking.

  • Rains are the perfect rain jackets

Rains are the perfect rain jackets imo. Got mine when my usual rain coat (which survived Netherlands weather!) couldn’t cut it in the incessant Danish rain, and it’s been the best purchase of the last 4 years. I love that they’re light, dry quickly and essentially have no lining so I can throw it over anything and wear it even in summer rain.

  • Rains are 100% waterproof and stylish

Invest in one from Rains. They are 100% waterproof. They come in a million colours, various lengths and styles and completely work. I currently have 3, a festival one, a dark colour for winter and a light colour for summer (I live in Galway). They are expensive but 100% worth it and actually look cool. Also the standard ones are very light so great for throwing over a big jumper.

  • Unbreathable but works in downpour

I love mine too. The only thing it being so waterproof is it's completely unbreathable. I sweat so much in it but works a charm in downpour.

  • Rains is like a pretty tarpaulin

These seem to be the best for stylish urban raincoats that are non-breathable, non-GoreTex. They are polyester or lined PVC, with Stutterheim being the premium and more expensive brand. Rains is like wearing a pretty tarpaulin.

  • Designed for commuting, not hiking

RAINS is a Scandinavian brand designed to for people to bike/public transit commute in really wet, windy weather. I have a RAINS raincoat and backpack that keeps me perfectly dry through Amsterdam fall/winter/spring. That being said, I also have a Patagonia raincoat that I use for hiking because it works better for the mobility you need while hiking. I think it depends on where you will be wearing your raincoat the most.

  • Stylish but heavy and not breathable

We saw Rains jackets EVERYWHERE in Copenhagen. I even went to a Rains store. The style everyone wears there has snaps, no zipper which is a deal breaker for me. The jacket was definitely distinct. It didn’t feel like it would breathe well at all and it felt heavier than one of the Patagonia jackets.
