Product Insights
The Buttoned Genuine Suede Jacket by Contemporaine is a $350 CAD cropped boxy silhouette that lengthens the torso when worn open and defines the waist when buttoned. Made from goat suede, it offers a coarser nap, lighter weight, and more pliability than cowhide, with high abrasion resistance and edge durability but requires protectant against stains. The button front enables repairability, adjustable draping, and a formal look, but allows small wind gaps compared to zippers. A full polyester satin lining resists wrinkling and eases layering, while the hazelnut suede develops a patina with wear. Exclusively at Simons in Canada, it fits petite frames without overwhelming and provides editorial contrast on taller builds. Care involves suede protectant and brush cleaning.

Deep Research
Styling a suede jacket with a shirt collar
- MenswearStyle categorizes the suede overshirt — defined by its shirt collar, button front, and chest pockets — as 'one of the most timeless and versatile suede options available,' a designation that holds regardless of gender.
- Because the jacket uses a true shirt collar with a stand and points rather than a lapel, the wearer controls the neckline posture — popped and buttoned to frame the face, or folded down for a classic V-neck opening — a small detail that doubles its styling range compared to fixed-lapel suede jackets.
- The jacket’s cropped, boxy fit and shirt collar echo the trucker-jacket tradition, a silhouette that Decrum confirms pairs naturally with suede because 'the relaxed, casual register of the Trucker style matches the soft, matte quality of suede' — making this an inherently harmonious design that avoids the stiffness of a blazer.
Button closure versus zip in suede jackets
- The button front elevates this suede jacket’s formality above that of a zip-front alternative, making it a viable choice for smart-casual offices and dinners where a zippered suede jacket would read too casual.
- The button front ties the jacket to the heritage of mid-century sport coats and 1970s suede shackets, reinforcing the classic, timeless feel that suede enthusiasts seek, rather than the modern, moto-influenced look of a zip.
- Because buttons allow you to fasten only a portion of the front closure — say, the top button for a cropped V-neck or just the middle buttons for a waisted moment — the jacket can be styled in multiple silhouettes, whereas a zipper is binary: all open or all closed.
- Between the buttons, small gaps remain even when fully fastened, which lets in more breeze than a sealed zipper — on a windy day, the jacket won't perform as a windblocker the way a zip-front suede jacket would.
- If a button falls off, it's a five-minute fix with needle and thread; a failed zipper, by contrast, often requires a specialty leather repair shop, making the button closure a safer bet for a garment you intend to wear for years.
How the cropped boxy silhouette fits
- Worn unbuttoned, the front hangs straight and creates a vertical line that lengthens the torso when paired with a fitted top; buttoned up, the cropped boxy cut snaps into a crisp shirt-jacket shape that defines the waist without a belt — two distinct looks from one piece.
- Because the boxy cut provides intentional slack through the torso, it comfortably layers over a fine-gauge knit or slim turtleneck — but bulky sweaters are best avoided, as they disrupt the cropped structured line and add visual bulk.
- Goat suede’s refined matte hand and natural pliability let the boxy cut sit easy across the torso without feeling stiff — the jacket holds its square shape yet yields to movement, so it never reads as rigid or costume-like.
- For women 5'4″ and under, the cropped length prevents the jacket from overwhelming the frame, and the boxy cut stays in proportion when paired with slim tailored bottoms — a fitted underlayer and high waistband maintain vertical continuity without adding width.
- The jacket’s cropped length hits at the natural waistline, creating an illusion of a smaller waist and elongating the legs — a flattering effect that works for every body type and is amplified by high-waisted trousers or skirts.
- On taller builds, the cropped boxy shape becomes a tool for fashion-forward proportion play: wearing it open over a long, flowing skirt or wide-leg trouser creates a structured-top, fluid-bottom contrast that reads as deliberately high-fashion.
How it compares to other suede jackets around $350
- Sold exclusively through Simons as a Canadian-designed piece, this jacket avoids the ubiquitousness of DTC brands like Quince, offering a curated, hard-to-find aesthetic that signals a more boutique mindset to the wearer.
- Contemporaine’s $350 CAD Buttoned jacket uses goat leather, which is more abrasion-resistant than the lambskin on the $395 CAD Ciara oversized style; the Ciara adds elastic waist and cuffs for a bloused look, but the Buttoned jacket offers a more durable hide and a simpler boxy silhouette at a $45 savings.
- Unlike Quince’s unlined 100% Suede Chore Jacket ($175 USD), the Contemporaine jacket has a full polyester satiny lining for $245 USD, which prevents the raw suede from catching on sweater knits and adds a subtle sheen to the interior — a practical upgrade for layering in cooler weather.
Goat suede texture, feel, and aging
- Goatskin suede achieves the rare balance of draping closely without sagging — the jacket will follow your movement but stand away from the body in a controlled boxy silhouette, unlike softer suedes that can collapse after a few wears.
- Unlike the uniformly smooth nap of lambskin, goat suede has a slightly coarser, more textured surface that keeps its matte depth from washing out in bright light, so the Hazelnut colour holds its earthy richness rather than looking flat.
- Goat suede is inherently lighter and more pliable than cowhide suede, giving this jacket an airy, throw-on feel that suits the cropped, boxy cut — it layers comfortably over a shirt or light knit without adding visual bulk.
- Goatskin suede absorbs dye with exceptional uniformity, particularly in warm earth tones like the Hazelnut of this jacket — meaning the colour saturation holds across the entire garment without patchiness, even after extended exposure to sunlight and body heat.
- On a light earth tone like Hazelnut, the jacket will develop a darker patina at the collar, cuffs, and pocket edges from natural oils and friction — this darkening is the suede equivalent of a burnished heirloom, not a flaw, and is prized by collectors for making each jacket unique.
- Suede typically relaxes about 0.5–1 cm across the chest and shoulders over the first few months of wear, so if the cropped boxy fit feels intentionally tailored at first, it will ease into a personal, lived-in shape without losing its crisp silhouette.
How the satin polyester lining breathes
- Jackets with low-friction satin linings are measurably easier to put on and take off, particularly when layered over knitwear or dress shirts — the smooth surface doesn’t grab, so the jacket drops on without bunching at the elbows.
- The satin’s smooth face prevents the lining from catching on shirt sleeves — a specific pain point in tailored jacket sleeves where friction can hike up the shirt cuff.
- Polyester fibers inherently resist creasing and recover quickly from compression, so the lining stays smooth and neat after hours of sitting — a practical advantage over viscose or cotton linings that can wrinkle and buckle.
- When a lining grips inner layers, it can distort the outer shell and create uneven folds, but the satin’s glide means the cropped boxy fit stays crisp and the suede front panels hang evenly, even after reaching or twisting.
- The satin weave’s high float ratio creates a face significantly smoother than plain-woven linings, reducing the pulling sensation when arms move inside sleeves and allowing the jacket body to glide over base layers without dragging the outer suede out of alignment.
- Polyester satin offers high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, so the lining won’t easily tear at armhole seams or side panels even with regular on/off motion — especially relevant in a cropped jacket that’s likely worn unbuttoned over bulky knits.

Veste boutonnée en Suède véritable.
Je recommande cette article. Très belle qualité et très belle couleur.
Satisfaite
Je le recommande. Le matériel est souple et de très bonne qualité.
Veste de suède
Très belle mais la couleur trop fade pour moi
Perfect!
The quality of the suede in this beautiful jacket is immediately apparent: it is soft, supple and unblemished. The colour and fit are perfect and it’s very stylish. I can’t wait for spring in order to wear it. Would highly recommend it.
It's what I hoped it would be. . .
Perfect suede jacket!! Long sleeves, good body length. It's soft and fits perfectly. . . not too loose, not too tight. I'm almost 5'10" and small fits great. I love it!
Soft lovely perfect suede jacket
I had my eye on this for months and finally pulled the trigger. So glad I did! The suede is a lovely colour, it’s very soft and fills silky and light to wear. I’m usually a small to medium and chose medium, I like jackets not too fitted. And I can easily wear a sweater under this. I I likely could’ve sized up to a large and I would be curious to see how that fits. One last thing is the price of this jacket for the quality and feel as very impressive.
Well tailored jacket
This is a well made, soft jacket that looks wonderful on. I’m happy that I bought it! It’s roomy enough for a light sweater underneath but not baggy. Looks smart!
Great Suede Jacket For the Price
Beautiful suede jacket. Good quality for the price. The colour (hazelnut) is true to the colour on-line. I ordered an extra large (I'm usually between a large and extra large in Contemporaine outerwear) and the extra large was the right fit for me.
Mauvaise teinte
Le veston était brun sur la photo mais la description donnait autre chose. Finalement c’est l’image qui était erronée .
veste suède
J'apprécie particulièrement la souplesse du tissu ce que rend ce vêtement très confortable!
Love this jacket! Soft, perfect
Love this jacket! Soft, perfect colour, and not too hrs y.
Q&A
2 answered- What is the recommended care for this genuine suede jacket? Is it water-resistant or should it be treated with a protectant?
- We recommend treating this genuine suede jacket with a waterproofing spray designed specifically for suede and nubuck leather to protect against moisture and stains. Suede is not naturally water-resistant, so a protectant is essential. For cleaning, gently brush with a suede brush to remove surface dirt and spot-clean stains with a suede eraser; avoid soaking the jacket or using harsh chemicals. Always test any product on an inconspicuous area first.
- How does the goat suede hold up over time? Is it prone to staining or fading with regular wear?
- Goat suede is naturally durable and resists abrasion better than cow suede, but it is still a porous material that can absorb liquids and show stains if not treated. Regular application of a suede protector spray can help resist staining and fading, though some color variation with wear is normal for this type of leather.
