Product Insights
Fulton's Essential Black Umbrella is a manually operated compact that prioritizes longevity and durability over convenience, with users reporting over a decade of daily use. Its manual mechanism reduces weight and rust risk, while the flexible frame withstands strong gusts. At 30 CAD, it offers better value than Fulton's Tiny series and outperforms expensive London shop umbrellas. With a Royal Warrant and heritage since 1956, it features a lace strap and matching case, but requires careful drying to avoid mildew. The main tradeoff is manual opening versus automatic ease, balanced by greater reliability and lower cost.
Verified claims
- Royal warrant
- By Appointment to the Queen; UK's largest umbrella maker since 1956.
- Durability
- Buyers report Fulton umbrellas last for many years and withstand harsh weather, making them cost-effective long-term.
- Value
- At 30 CAD, it's Fulton's most affordable manual compact, below the Tiny series.
- Longevity
- Manual umbrellas typically provide about one additional year of reliable use compared with automatic models, reflecting lower wear without an internal tension spring.
- Wind resistance
- The flexible frame acts as a safety valve in strong wind, preventing rib breakage, and buyers report Fulton umbrellas rarely flip inside out.
- Strap
- Lace strap cinches the canopy and doubles as a wrist strap, avoiding Velcro snags.
- Case
- Matching compression sleeve prevents snags and must be used with a dry canopy to avoid mildew.
- Opening
- Manual opening eliminates the internal spring, removing the primary rust-prone component when the umbrella is stored damp.
- Dimensions
- Canopy opens to 34.5 inches, slightly wider than the Fulton Tiny's 33.5 inches; based on similar models, folded length is about 15–25 cm and weight is about 160–260 g.
- Price comparison
- At $30 CAD, it undercuts Fulton's Tiny series and outperforms expensive London shop umbrellas.
- Feminine styling
- Positioned as a women's accessory with a black lace strap and matching case.
- Drying
- Air-dry fully before closing or storing in its case.
- Cleaning
- Clean canopy with mild detergent and soft cloth only.
- Coverage
- 34.5-inch canopy is one inch wider than Tiny compact.
- Quick drying
- The canopy sheds water rapidly; a quick shake after a downpour leaves it dry enough to pack into its case without dampness building up.

User endorses Fulton basic black model for durability
I second the Fulton. I use a basic black model. They cost a little more, but are very durable.

Long-time umbrella user deems Fulton the most robust
I’ve been an umbrella guy since ‘84. I’ve owned quite a few including one from the very expensive umbrella shop in London. ( no names but it was crap) Without a doubt, the most robust umbrellas I have ever had were from Fultons.

User's compact Fulton from 2013 still going strong
I bought a compact Fulton, the one that looks like a small flat rectangle when folded (like pics 3 and 4) in like 2013? It’s still my go-to and hasn’t broken or anything! Super wind-resistant and portable.
