Product Insights
Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses are a heritage browline style originating in 1947, revived as a bestseller in the 1980s and 2000s, offering a classic look that projects confidence and easygoing taste. The core promise is a deliberate style statement built with color-through acetate that resists chipping and fading, best realized in tortoise two-tone contrast. The main tradeoff is a fit that suits angular and oval faces but not round ones, with metal nose pads that snag hair and cause slipping during active wear, limited lens sizes, and optical quality that enthusiasts find inferior to similarly priced competitors like Serengeti or American Optical.
Verified claims
- Face shape suitability
- Suits angular and oval face shapes; not recommended for round faces.
- Comfort
- Comfortable all day when adjusted, but slips in sweat and snags hair.
- Heritage
- The Clubmaster browline originated in 1947 with the Shuron Ronsir and was revived as a bestseller in the 1980s and again in the 2000s.
- Style caveats
- Some buyers note that the all-black Clubmaster misses the two-tone design, and others consider the Wayfarer more flattering.
- Color contrast
- Tortoise (taupe) preserves the two-tone contrast better than black (Oxford).
- Gender versatility
- Though listed as female, the Clubmaster is worn by both men and women.
- Stability
- 37g frame and non-rubberized pads cause slipping; not for active wear.
- Hair snagging
- Metal nose pads snag hair when worn as a headband.
- Fit
- Limited to two lens sizes and less ideal for round faces than the Wayfarer.
- Use context
- Dressier than Oakleys; suited for smart-casual and professional looks.
- Optical quality
- Enthusiasts report better optical quality and build from Serengeti and American Optical at a similar price.
- Model code
- RB3016 code signals the original Clubmaster — the template for all later variants.
- Size code
- Size inscription 51▢21 140 follows a universal format for easy fit comparison.
- Build
- Acetate frame, standard hinges, category 3 lenses, and 24-month warranty.
- Persona
- Wearer is perceived as confident and easygoing, with a taste for classic style.
- Style distinction
- Less universally flattering than Wayfarer, so wearers make a deliberate statement.
- Durability appeal
- Color embedded through acetate frames, resisting chip and fade over years.
- Scratches
- Prevent scratches by storing lenses up; remove light scratches with professional buffing.
- Care
- Heat warps acetate above 140°F; have hinges adjusted by an optician.
- Color-through acetate
- Color-through acetate resists chipping and fading over years.
- Warranty
- 24-month manufacturer warranty covers the acetate frame.
- Nose pads
- Nose pads catch hair and slip with sweat; adjustable for fit.
- Hinges
- Standard metal hinges require periodic screw tightening and lack spring flex.

Opinion on Clubmaster suitability for a round face
Well, at least one guy speaking the truth is getting decent upvotes and everyone else that says it looks good is getting downvotes except for one gu... No, it doesn't look good. Not even close. You need something sharper to go with the round face and the lack of a jawline.

Detailed replica quality and features
- Looks: Again, I’m not an expert but these are about as close to a 1:1 that you can get in my opinion. The logo is perfect and in the right place. The RB etching is perfect and in the right place. They have the correct 4 point hinges as opposed to the 2 point hinges you see with cheaper pairs. The writing on the frames is borderline perfect. The RB etching under the nose pads is correct, as is the etching on the bridge of the glasses. They are also definitely polarised.

UV protection test and build quality
Just like last time, I ran the same UV test using my UV torch and test card. Lens placed half over the card, half exposed; and the result is exactly what you want to see. The section covered by the lens blocked the UV completely, while the exposed half reacted instantly. So again, full UV protection confirmed.

Color choice and design philosophy
Re: Tortoise vs all black. I think the point of Clubmasters is the contrast of the acetate vs metal, so if you choose all black I personally think it's kinda missing the point (might as well just get a wayfarer).

Versatile styling and customer base
RayBan clubmasters attract a broad customer base. Preppy college students pair them with collared shirts and the look is crisp. They go well with a suit, as well. High school kids usually grab the aviators or Oakley first, but I see them on kids who like fashion all the time. The girls tend to pair them with oversized hoodies and they still look awesome. RayBan offers them in so many color and lens options, it would be hard to NOT find a pair that suits your needs. There is an oversized option that lools great on bigger guys, too. The personality who buys this frame is usually confident, someone who small talks easily, and someone who likes the classic look of it.

Comparison to Wayfarer regarding wearability
The Wayfarer is arguably the most iconic sunglass ever made. It's universally flattering and timeless. The Clubmaster, IMO, is dated and harder to pull off for the majority of people. Wayfarer all the way.
