Product Insights
The Crystals And Pearls Orb Choker by Vivienne Westwood merges punk countercultural symbolism with aristocratic pearl subversion, its orb pendant—a 1987 Harris Tweed debut—revived by Nana manga and TikTok aesthetics, but the $350 CAD price reflects brand prestige over materials, as Swarovski crystals are glued and non-replaceable, plating requires careful maintenance, and near-identical fakes are common, leaving owners to weigh authenticity markers like packaging and heritage against the tradeoff of buying a replica for the same look.

Deep Research
Finding your fit: 14.5-inch vs 16.25-inch
- The gold-standard rule for choker fit is to add 1–2 inches to your neck circumference for a close but comfortable wear; that translates to Size 1 (14.5”) fitting best on neck sizes of 12–13 inches—the low end of adult women’s ranges—and Size 2 (16.25”) accommodating neck sizes of 14–15 inches, or anyone preferring a looser, non-constricting feel that can even be stacked with another chain.
The story behind the iconic orb
- The orb logo came so close to the official Harris Tweed orb mark that it caused a moment of confusion, but Harris Tweed's leadership tolerated it because Westwood had personally revived the fabric's fortunes — adding a layer of industry lore that ties the choker's pendant to a protected textile heritage.
- A major driver of the orb choker's 2020s renaissance is the Japanese manga Nana (2006-2007), whose creator Ai Yazawa — a former fashion student — heavily featured Westwood's pieces; the cult manga's collision with TikTok's anime and e-girl communities transformed this choker into a Gen Z talisman.
- Westwood's deployment of the orb on pearls upends the gem's aristocratic associations, turning the choker into what was described as an 'anti-systemic allegory' — the piece reads as a stealth protest against establishment codes, not a dainty accessory.
- Before the orb became a pendant, it lived on the 'Deep Sky' jumper — a knit Westwood imagined Prince Charles might wear in his spare time, loaded with royal insignia but subverted with futuristic radar dishes and the phrase 'Deep Sky,' setting the template for the house's signature parody of Britishness.
- The orb debuted as a jewelry pendant in the Harris Tweed autumn/winter 1987-88 runway show, which also revived the centuries-old Scottish fabric — a full decade before many of today's Gen Z fans were born, anchoring the choker in a specific, historically dense collection.
- The orb's Saturn ring was drawn directly from astronomy magazines shown to Westwood by her son Ben, while the orb itself references the Sovereign's Orb from the Crown Jewels — the pendant literally fuses cosmic imagery with British heraldry, not mere branding.
Everyday care to prolong shine and luster
- Storing the choker flat in its included Vivienne Westwood dust bag between wears shields the silver plating from airborne sulfur and prevents the synthetic pearls from rubbing against other jewelry — a simple habit that slows tarnish and keeps the orb's crystal finish pristine.
- To preserve the synthetic pearl coating, wipe the strand with a clean, dry microfiber cloth after every wear — this lifts skin oils before they can dull the surface, and avoids the risk of water or cleaning solution weakening the thread or loosening the clasp.
- When the silver plating eventually wears thin, professional re-plating restoration costs far less than replacing the choker and returns the original bright finish, making careful daily handling a worthwhile investment to delay that point.
- For occasional deeper cleaning of the silver-plated orb and chain, a lukewarm bath with a single drop of mild dish soap and a soft-bristled baby toothbrush removes accumulated body oils without scratching the plating — bypassing silver dips and abrasive pastes preserves the thin silver layer for years.
Synthetic pearls: consistency and care
- The non-porous synthetic coating actively repels perfume, sweat, and skin oils that would gradually dull organic nacre, so the pearls stay bright even when worn against the neck on warm evenings or directly over fragrance — a practical advantage that makes the choker more forgiving in daily use than a fine pearl necklace.
What Swarovski crystals bring to the piece
- Swarovski's proprietary glass recipe yields a higher refractive index than ordinary crystal glass, approaching that of a diamond, which means the small crystals on this choker produce an unexpectedly high level of fire and brilliance more commonly associated with fine jewelry.
- Since 2012, every Swarovski crystal is produced with a lead-free Advanced Crystal formula that matches the refractive index and weight of traditional lead crystal (historically ~32% lead oxide), so the orb's crystals deliver the same dense sparkle as vintage Swarovski pieces while meeting modern EU safety standards.
- Swarovski crystals are cut with computer-controlled machinery that places up to 100 facets per stone, each facet meeting at a mathematically precise point — a precision that produces significantly greater light dispersion than typical rhinestones, so the orb's crystal encrusting sparkles with a diamond-like fire.
- Each Swarovski crystal is manufactured at the company's Wattens, Austria factory under tight quality controls that eliminate internal air bubbles, swirl marks, and blemishes — so the crystals on this orb exhibit a flawless, glassy clarity even under close scrutiny.
Buying with confidence: authenticity and packaging
- The listing includes a Vivienne Westwood box and signature dust bag, which are standard for authentic jewelry from the brand; counterfeit packaging often feels flimsy or lacks the precise branding, so the presence of these items is a strong indicator of a genuine item.
- Vivienne Westwood invites customers to contact customer.service@viviennewestwood.com if there is any doubt about an authorized distributor, providing a direct way to confirm that Simons is a legitimate stockist before purchasing.

Q&A
7 answered- How secure is the interlocking orb clasp, and are there reports of it accidentally opening during wear?
- The interlocking orb clasp has been reported to come undone during wear, which poses a risk of losing the necklace. We recommend checking the closure regularly and handling the choker with care.
- Are the Swarovski crystals glued or set into the orb, and can they be replaced individually if they fall out?
- The Swarovski crystals are typically glued into the orb setting, as is common with costume jewelry. If a crystal falls out, individual replacement is not offered by us; the choker would need professional repair, which may be difficult due to the small size of the crystals.
- Is the orb pendant detachable from the chain, or is it permanently fixed?
- The orb pendant is permanently fixed to the chain; it is not designed to be detached. The clasp at the back is for opening and closing the necklace, not for removing the pendant.
- Under normal daily wear, how long does the silver plating typically last before showing signs of wear or tarnish?
- Under normal daily wear, the silver plating can show signs of wear within months to a year if exposed to water, sweat, or perfume. With careful use—avoiding moisture and chemicals—the plating can last several years before needing replating.
- Is it worth the price?
- Most say no, citing non-precious materials and fragile construction.
- How durable is it?
- With careful use (avoid water, sweat, perfume), it can last years, but plating wear and crystal loss are common.
- How does it compare to fakes?
- Fakes are often indistinguishable and made of similar materials; many users suggest buying fakes to save money.

Disappointment upon seeing the necklace in person
I was dreaming about this necklace for over a year and today i finally went to the boutique to see it in real life. What i can say it was the biggest disappointment of this years. The orb looks good But the pearls... they look cheap AF

Positive long-term experience with the necklace
I have this necklace and I think it’s worth it. I’ve had it for roughly 2 years and I wear it to work pretty frequently (restaurant work) and it’s held up. Still has all the rhinestones, over time it has developed a patina because of the silver plating over the brass wearing away, but imo it adds to my love for it, nothing wrong with a well loved piece of jewelry. I just make sure not to sleep or shower with it on and it seems to have worked out well, it’s truly a staple piece in my jewelry collection!

Detailed description of the necklace and care tips
It has a nice weight to it but not so heavy that it feels bothersome! The clasp in the back is rather interesting interlocking mechanism in that its a coin shaped piece (the orb) that slides into the connecting piece (the saturn rings and cross) and interlocks together. Its not the most secure clasping method, but there are ways to secure it without worrying it falling off. My best recommendation would be to just just a gold safety pin (so Westwood btw) and pin the the two together once its locked in place so that if it does come undone it wont fall off.
