Sweater Stone
This manual garment care tool is a rectangular pumice stone designed to remove pilling, fuzz, and lint from knitted fabrics. It is used by gently combing the stone over sweaters and other knit garments to restore their original appearance, and it is suitable for both natural and synthetic fibers. The stone is durable and long-lasting but may crumble into sandy residue during use and should be applied carefully on delicate single-ply knits to avoid thinning or damage.

Product Insights
The Sweater Stone is a 22 CAD de-pilling tool made of 100% natural pumice, produced since 1986 in Seattle sheltered workshops employing people of all abilities, and trusted by retailers like Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, and Nordstrom. Its manual, battery-free process uses a single fixed surface that buyers describe as meditative but leaves a black sandy residue and can thin delicate fabrics like cashmere and synthetics; it is best suited for thick wool and fleece. While non-toxic and eco-friendly with inert end-of-life, users preferring a residue-free alternative may choose the Gleener.
Verified claims
- Material
- 100% natural pumice with no synthetic materials or additives.
- Manufacturing practices

- Fabric suitability
- Works best on robust knits like thick wool and fleece; avoid delicate cashmere, knits with more than 5% elastane, and heat-set polyester outerwear.
- Usage precautions
- Pre-test hidden area; best for small, fine pills and surface fuzz; black residue may show on light fabrics; repeated use thins knits.
- Cleaning
- Rinse under warm water and air dry after use; avoid soap.
- Environmental
- Pumice dust is inert and non-toxic, unlike the waste from electric fabric shavers.
- Ease of use
- Buyers report a satisfying manual process with no batteries and simple cleaning.
- Garment safety
- Can gradually thin delicate knits and leave black sandy residue.
- Eco-friendliness
- 100% natural pumice, zero electricity, no synthetic materials or chemical additives, and made in Seattle since 1986.
- Fabric safety
- Can thin delicate fabrics such as fine wool and cashmere.
- Value
- At 22 CAD, it depills many surfaces but leaves dust; some find the manual use meditative.
- Fabric risk
- Non-toxic, but can damage fine cashmere and certain synthetics such as knits with more than 5% elastane or heat-set polyester outerwear.
- Manual process
- Buyers report the manual de-pilling process is satisfying and restores sweaters to like-new.
- Residue
- Buyers report the stone sheds black grit and gradually wears down.
- Disposal
- 100% natural pumice, inert and non-toxic; safe to discard in household trash.
- Fabric care
- Buyers caution that aggressive use on delicate knits can thin fabric permanently.
- Endorsements
- A buyer reports that Patagonia recommends the Sweater Stone for care of its Better Sweater fleece.
- Fabric compatibility
- Not for delicate cashmere, single-ply knits, or knits with more than 5% elastane.
- Sustainability
- Natural pumice, no electricity, no microplastics, inert end-of-life.
- Pre-use test
- Pre-use test under 10× magnification on a seam is recommended to prevent damage.
- Pill removal mechanism
- Pumice's 5.5-6 Mohs hardness allows the Sweater Stone to snag and snap pill filaments without gouging the underlying yarns, making it less destructive than razor blades.
- Natural and synthetic fibers
- The Sweater Stone is designed to work on both natural fibers like wool and cashmere and synthetics, where pilling tends to form, but it should be kept away from silk-containing fabrics, hemp, mohair, and coarse or patterned crochet.
- Durability
- The stone is designed to wear down slowly and outlast electric shavers; some users consider it buy-it-for-life, though some reviewers find it crumbles more quickly than expected.
- Dry cleaning alternative
- Using the Sweater Stone to de-pill at home takes the garment out of a dry-cleaning solvent cycle, making it an eco-friendly alternative to dry cleaning.

De-pilling thick wool and fleece knits at home or on the go
Use this pumice-textured stone to comb pills and lint off sturdy knits like thick wool and fleece sweaters, restoring their look without a trip to the dry cleaner. Reviewers report it lifts pills without snagging on robust fabrics, and its compact, battery-free design makes it handy for quick touch-ups while traveling. Note that it sheds gritty black residue as it works, so it's best used on dark fabrics or over a trash bin, and its abrasiveness may snag delicate, fine-gauge knits.[1]

Very messy
Removed pilling from fabric BUT left black sandy residue all over item and floor. Would not recommend.

Bonne affaire
C’est un bon achat, meilleure que certain petit rasoir à vêtements.
It is not what I
It is not what I expected. This sweater stone doesn't seem to work, and is quite crumbly so creates a mess without actually alleviating the pilling.
Efficace et doux
J’ai acheté ce produit suite à la recommandation de Patagonia pour l’entretien de leur « Better Sweater ». Doux et efficace à la fois pour retirer les bouloches. Très satisfaite de mon achat.

Reddit Insights
6 threads · r/malefashionadvice, r/FrugalFemaleFashion, r/knitting, r/BuyItForLife, r/BehindTheClosetDoorRedditors view sweater stones as a cheap, durable, and therapeutic manual depilling tool that works well on robust fabrics but may crumble, leave residue, and damage delicate knits.
While many users appreciate the sweater stone's affordability, longevity, and effectiveness on coarse fabrics, concerns about residue, fabric damage, and limited suitability temper the overall reception.

Watch Out For
Compared To
vs Electric fabric shavers (e.g., Conair, Philips)
Electric shavers are faster but can snag fabric; sweater stone is manual, cheaper, but can be messy and thinning.
vs Gleener fabric shaver
The Gleener is often preferred for its clean operation and versatile heads; sweater stone leaves pumice dust and is less gentle.
vs Regular pumice stone
Sweater stone is lighter, black, and specifically designed for fabric, unlike denser gray regular pumice.

User reviews sweater stone noting fine pilling effectiveness but messy residue
I've tried one of these and it works pretty well on small, fine pilling (rather than big dangly pills). But the big disadvantage is that the pumice crumbles into a sandy residue that you have to shake out. My favorite anti-pilling tools are the battery-operated sweater shaver and the Gleener (which has a few different heads with emery board grit for coarse, medium, and fine yarns and a velvet lint removal head on the other side.)

User finds sweater stone great for cushions but unsuitable for delicate single-ply knit
I have a sweater stone which is essentially just a pumice stone, it works well for certain fabrics but not for others. For example, it works great on my sofa cushions which were pilling, but I tried using it on a hand knit sweater (single-ply merino wool) and immediately realized it did not work with the sweater due to the yarn being single-ply. So depending on what you’re using it for the sweater stone could be great BIFL (doesn’t break or lose power) but doesn’t work for all types of items.

User explains difference between sweater stone and regular pumice stone
It is different. My pumice stone in the shower is gray and really dense. This is black and it’s very light. I’ve done three more of my favorite sweaters and I love this thing! Edited because I was wrong! According to this, pumice stone can be used for a lot of things! https://experthometips.com/uses-for-a-pumice-stone I would say one big difference is the price. Buy one for skincare? $8. Buy one to remove pills from your sweaters? $1.

User prefers Gleener over sweater stone due to thinning fabric
I don’t like the electric ones or sweater stones. Various issues with both (snagging in the former and thinning fabric in the latter). I like the Gleener best.
