This has come up on this subreddit before and is a known issue. Coach isn't cheap shit as a whole, but there are definitely some design flaws as you've encountered (i.e. quilted Tabby fragility, and certain color hardware chipping).

Durability after one year of use
I don’t recommend the quilted tabby for daily use. However, I’m surprised it’s actually held up quite well for a lambskin bag with heavy use. Chanel lambskin can’t even hold up to that much wear and tear.

Quality control and leather sensitivity
I would stay far away from this bag (And nappa leather in general) if youre a little bit rougher with your bags maily because the leather is delicate. That being said, I did have quality issues with the quilted tabby regarding craftsmanship. My first black quilted tabby was visibly shorter on the left side, wonky and with flat quilts. My first yellow tabby had leather pulling. I had to go to store to switch them. Time consuming and annoying, but I'm glad I did it. Also if you get one with leather covered C, it is prone to scratches and marks.
