Product Insights

The Tiiliskivi Brick Pattern Pure Wool Rug by Marimekko is a modernist statement rooted in functionalist philosophy, originally designed in 1952 and part of Unikko's 60th-anniversary collection. Hand-tufted in India from dense New Zealand wool with a 3000 g/m² pile, it delivers sharp pattern clarity, rich saturated colors with a matte velvety finish, and performance benefits including spill repellency, allergen trapping, noise dampening (up to 55%), flame self-extinguishment up to 600°C, and thermal insulation. Its carbon-negative wool stores 510g of carbon per kg. The main tradeoff is initial shedding that resolves within three months with proper vacuuming, and a need for a rug pad on hardwood to prevent potential residue from the latex-cotton backing.

Verified claims

Design heritage
Tiiliskivi pattern designed in 1952 embodies Ratia's functionalist philosophy.
Collectible status
Tiiliskivi rug belongs to Unikko's 60th-anniversary collection.
Craftsmanship
Hand-tufted with 3000 g/m² pile weight for lasting pattern definition.
Performance
The New Zealand wool pile repels spills, traps allergens, dampens noise, self-extinguishes flames, and insulates underfoot.
Durability
The dense low-pile construction resists crushing, springs back after compression, and sheds minimally after break-in.
Environmental impact
Each kilogram of wool stores 510g of carbon, making it carbon-negative.
Visual quality
New Zealand wool's bright base delivers rich, saturated colors with a matte, velvety finish.
Pile construction
Dense 3000 g/m² pile weight and 10-12mm cut pile yield a plush, resilient surface.
Provenance
Hand-tufted in India by Dutch rug maker Brink & Campman, part of Marimekko's 60th-anniversary of the Unikko pattern.
Color styling
The brick pattern's simplicity lets blue and yellow define the room: blue cool, yellow warm.
Color depth
The New Zealand wool's cream-white base and matte finish give both colors deep, velvety saturation.
Pattern clarity
Low pile and dense hand-tufting keep the brick pattern sharp and defined.
Design lineage
Tiiliskivi reflects Marimekko's functionalist origin, making the rug a modernist statement in any color.
Shedding
Initial shedding diminishes with vacuuming (no beater bar) within 3 months.
Hardwood compatibility
Latex-cotton non-slip backing works on hardwood; a rug pad prevents potential residue.
Wear resistance
10–12 mm low pile and dense construction avoid permanent dents under furniture.
Natural protections
Lanolin coating repels spills; wool self-extinguishes up to 600°C.
Acoustic and thermal
Wool pile reduces ambient noise by up to 55% and insulates against cold.
Flame safety
Wool fibres are flame retardant up to 600°C and self-extinguishing.
Air quality
Traps allergens and VOCs, resists dust mites for cleaner air.
Carbon negativity
100% New Zealand wool is carbon-negative: 0.34 kg CO₂e per kg produced, stores 510 g carbon per kg.
Sustainability features
Natural wool properties reduce environmental impact: stain resistance from lanolin, flame retardancy up to 600°C, and thermal insulation.
Texture
Dense 3000 g/m² wool pile creates a velvety, matte surface.
Color vibrancy
New Zealand wool's whiter base makes dyes appear especially vibrant.

Anneli L.

Terrible service from UPS. For the past week, they set delivery dates and never show. Sometimes the rug is allegedly being processed in one facility, then another. Twice they claimed to have missed me when I was at home & rug wasn't showing as out for delivery. After that they started saying they don't have my address but I have no way of contacting them.

I've been sitting on wanting this rug for months and my heart sank when I finally ordered it. The color is completely off from the images. The photos show a light beige background with muted golden brick pattern. It could not be further off. The beige is a very dark taupe. The yellow color is a very dark brown with a slight yellow tint. Wouldn't even call it bronze. The quality was extremely poor as well. The yarn cuts were in even, unfinished edges everywhere. For $1500, its a huge disappointment.
