Product Insights

The Loloi Alina is a handwoven Indian wool rug whose case rests on construction honesty rather than plushness: a hand-loomed, front-to-back pile with no canvas or glue backing, classed at roughly 10-25 years of life, about double a tufted rug, and GoodWeave-certified through unannounced in-country audits tied to a named licensed exporter and importer, funding 55 Child Friendly Communities for schooling in India — though the label does not guarantee a living wage. At 939 CAD for the 79x262 cm size (the wider 171x262 cm runs 1889 CAD, roughly 7% cheaper per square metre, with 259x350 cm and larger also available), the rug anchors under sofa legs or suits a hall or bedside, and its actual promise is warm, grounding calm: a Hazelnut two-level checkerboard that reads as texture rather than a graphic centerpiece, firm and dense underfoot rather than plush, cozy and earthy in warm sunlight but flatter in cool north-facing light, unifying oak, walnut, linen and stone while fighting cool grey furniture, positioned beside Natural and Dove with no olive, rust or terracotta. The tradeoff is that this is a finished dye lot, so tone varies between units and individual rugs, Hazelnut is warmer and more mid-brown than grey-toned photos suggest (order a swatch), and ownership demands behavior: heavy shedding for the first one to three months tapering by around month six, loop pile that can snag and ladder on claws or stiletto heels and must be trimmed level with scissors rather than pulled, vacuuming without a beater bar or on highest pile setting with low suction, immediate blotting with a clean white cloth rather than rubbing, pH-neutral professional deep cleaning, and a rug pad on all surfaces since there is no backing, for slip prevention, cushion and durability.

Verified claims

Durability
Handwoven construction is classed for roughly 10-25 years, about double a tufted rug.
Construction
Hand-loomed pile woven front-to-back, with no canvas or glue backing
Snagging
The loop pile can snag and ladder where claws or stiletto heels catch it.
Repair
Trim a stray snag level with scissors rather than pulling it
Vacuuming
Vacuum without a beater bar, or set the bar to its highest pile setting with low suction
Footprint
Same 262 cm length, two widths: 171 cm anchors under sofa legs, 79 cm suits a hall or bedside
Price per area
The $939 price is the 79x262 cm size; the wider 171x262 cm is $1889, about 7% cheaper per square metre
Collection sizes
The Alina collection also comes in 259 x 350 cm and larger sizes.
Rug pad
No backing: Loloi recommends a rug pad on all surfaces to prevent slipping, add cushion and improve durability.
Certification
GoodWeave-certified: no child or forced labour, with documented working conditions.
Living wage
GoodWeave certification does not guarantee a living wage for the weaver.
Audit verification
The label is enforced by unannounced in-country audits, not a self-declaration.
Community impact
Certification funds 55 Child Friendly Communities improving children's access to school in India.
Traceability
Every GoodWeave label is issued to a named licensed exporter and importer.
Coordination
Warm Hazelnut unifies oak, walnut, linen and stone, but fights cool grey furniture.
Light sensitivity
Reads warmer and richer in warm sunlight, flatter in cool north-facing light.
Mood
Warm brown reads cozy and grounding rather than airy or clinical.
Colorway
Hazelnut is the warm brown option beside Natural and Dove, with no olive, rust or terracotta.
Pattern
Subtle two-level checkerboard reads as calm texture, not a graphic centerpiece
Color accuracy
Order a swatch: Hazelnut is a warm, earthy mid-brown, warmer than grey-toned photos suggest.
Dye lot variation
Each rug is a finished dye lot, so two Hazelnut units can differ slightly in depth.
Pile feel
Firm and textured underfoot, not plush: a dense two-level wool pile
Shedding
Sheds heavily for the first one to three months, tapering off by around month six
Spot cleaning
Blot spills at once with a clean white cloth; rubbing works stains deeper into wool
Deep cleaning
Deep clean with a professional using pH-neutral wool-safe products.
Origin
Handwoven in India from dyed wool, so individual rugs vary in tone
Lanolin stain resistance
Wool's retained lanolin coating makes water-based spills such as coffee, juice, and wine bead on the surface instead of soaking straight into the weave, giving a blotting window before a stain sets.
Shipping crush marks
Fresh from the roll, this wool rug can show light-and-dark crush marks that are transient rather than permanent and usually clear within 3–6 months with vacuuming and ordinary foot traffic.
Sun fade and rotation
In consistently sunlit areas this wool rug can fade or shift color unevenly, but rotating it 180° about every six months spreads light exposure and footfall so tone and wear stay even.
Aftermarket stain protectors
Do not apply fluorochemical or silicone-based anti-soiling sprays to this rug; the wool's lanolin already provides spill protection, and aftermarket finishes can damage wool's own anti-soiling behavior.
Patina/shading
The checkerboard can develop lighter and darker shading over time as the pile fibers bend and reflect light differently; this is normal wool patina rather than a defect or sign of wear.

Why and when to choose each product
Alina Wool Indoor Rug See Available Sizes: Choose this if you want a handwoven 100% wool indoor rug with subtle texture rather than bold pattern: its elevated, two-level pile creates a subtle checkerboard design in an earthy Hazelnut palette that the maker says is easy to style in living rooms or bedrooms. It has a low 0.3 inch (0.76 cm) pile, is made in India with GoodWeave certification supporting weaver communities, and comes in 79X262CM and 171X262CM sizes. Note that it has no backing, so a rug pad is recommended for greater safety.[1,2,4]Ashby Wool Indoor Rug See Available Sizes: Choose this if you want a 100% hand-tufted wool rug with a ribbed, low-profile weave and subtle stripes in a light neutral grey with a heathered, flecked look. Its 0.4 inch (1 cm) pile and cotton-canvas backing suit living rooms, bedrooms, and offices in both traditional and modern styles, and it comes in three grey sizes (79x232 cm, 241x302 cm, and 262x366 cm). Note that a rug pad is recommended for greater safety.[5,6]Harlan Wool Indoor Rug See Available Sizes: Choose this if you want a handwoven 100% wool flatweave with warm, earthy character for living rooms, bedrooms, or other well-used spaces. Its chunky wool pile with whipstitch borders, classic striped design in dark brown with lighter golden-brown stripes, and GoodWeave-certified ethical production suit shoppers who value natural texture and craftsmanship. The pile is 0.5 inches (1.25 cm) and the merchant recommends using a rug pad for greater safety; large sizes include roughly 8 by 10 feet (241 x 302 cm) and 8 feet 7 inches by 11 feet 7 inches (262 x 354 cm) options in Patterned Brown.[7,8]

  • Negative experience with Loloi Gaia synthetic rug

We got a Loloi Gaia rug from Home Goods and boy did it deteriorate fast. The entire carpet has matted now in 2 years and cleaning with rug doctor couldn’t fix it either. The exact design and size was listed for $800+ on loloi site but it cost us 300 from Home goods. I would have been super bummed had I spent $800 on it. I learnt my lesson then to just never buy synthetic rugs. And of course Loloi doesn’t let me post a review on their site

  • Positive experience with Loloi printed rug and recommendation to buy at HomeGoods

I have seen higher end brands like Loloi for less than 200 for large sizes. Closer to 100 for 5x7. I have one of the rifle paper co x loloi printed rugs in my living room (high traffic with two dogs) and after 2 years it still looks like new!
