Product Insights

Ipanema's Brazil Flag Flip-Flops Men, launched in 2001 as a challenger to Havaianas and backed by Gisele Bündchen, embody Brazilian beach culture through their flag motif. They match standard Havaianas pricing at $32 CAD while offering a 2.5-year lifespan—6–12 months longer—and superior sustainability via vegan certification, 99% waste recovery, and factory certifications (ABVTEX, SUSTAINABLE ORIGIN, SMETA). However, buyers must size up one full size, and the thin straps deliver a barefoot feel but sacrifice lateral security, especially wet, with audible noise when wet.

Verified claims

Brand story
Launched July 2001 to challenge Havaianas, partnered with Gisele Bündchen in 2002, and named after Rio's Ipanema beach.
Manufacturing ethics
Factories hold maximum-level ABVTEX and SUSTAINABLE ORIGIN certifications and pass annual SMETA ethical audits.
Durability
Buyers report 2.5-year lifespan before cracking, 6–12 months longer than Havaianas.
Value
Priced the same as standard Havaianas, at $32 CAD.
Sustainability
Vegan certified and 99% waste recovery, unmatched by Havaianas.
Sizing
Buyers report these flip-flops run about one full size small; order the next bracket up.
Strap fit
Thin straps provide a barefoot feel but less lateral security than thicker straps.
Footbed grip
Textured footbed prevents slipping; the pattern is molded in and won't peel or wear off.
Wet traction
Moulded sidewalk-pattern sole provides non-slip grip on wet pavement and pool decks.
Fit and retention
US buyers should size up; thin straps reduce lateral retention in wet conditions.
Wet noise
Buyers report audible fart-like noise when soles are wet.
Footbed design
Molded footbed pattern prevents slipping, won't peel, and grips on wet surfaces.
Strap feel
Thin strap: no break-in, barefoot feel, but less foot security.
Flag patch
Flag patch and boardwalk pattern together communicate beach-culture identity.
Cultural identity
The Brazil flag motif explicitly brands these flip-flops as carriers of Ipanema's Brazilian cultural narrative.
Color range
Available in over 15 colors, including black, white, brown, navy, and ochre yellow.
Heritage
The flag model inherits the brand's history as a Gisele Bündchen‑backed global phenomenon and a domestic rival to Havaianas.
Materials
Made from Flexpand PVC with 30% recycled content, 100% recyclable, and Vegan Society certified.
Resource efficiency
Water use per pair down 31%, energy down 13% since 2013.
Ethical certifications
Factories hold top-level ABVTEX and SUSTAINABLE ORIGIN certifications and pass annual SMETA audits.

Sized wrong

Michelle G.

These were sized incorrectly. I purchased the men’s size 10, but they were equivalent to women’s 8. The sizes stamped into the bottom said US 10, so it was not packaged wrong.
