The Birkenstock Arizona Birko-Flor sandals for men are two-strap slide sandals featuring a synthetic Birko-Flor upper with two adjustable metal pin buckles, an anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed covered in suede, and a flexible EVA outsole. Designed for everyday casual wear, they offer a regular/wide fit, are made in Germany (model 0051701), and the footbed molds to the wearer's foot over time for customized support. User reviews note that while Birko-Flor provides comfort without a break-in period, it may be less breathable and durable than leather alternatives over extended use.

Product Insights

The Arizona Birko-Flor Sandal, Birkenstock’s top seller since 1971, offers the brand's signature cork-latex footbed and immediate comfort without break-in, but its Birko-Flor upper—less breathable and non-stretching than leather—traps heat and moisture leading to odor, while the cork footbed is vulnerable to water damage, making it unsuitable for wet or hot conditions; handmade in Germany with durable hardware, its regular/wide fit accommodates wide feet, but buyers seeking long-term value typically prefer leather.

Odor

Buyers report that Birko-Flor traps heat and moisture, causing foot odor more than leather.

Why this is supported

Reddit users report that

Birko-Flor starts to stink after a while even after a wash.u/Maelstrom760 in r/Birkenstocks

This aligns with Q&A findings that

Traction

Handmade in Germany with durable hardware; prone to water damage and slippery when wet.

Why this is supported

The sandals are handmade in Birkenstock’s production facilities in Görlitz, Germany, and undergo 17 production stages. The buckle attachment uses the

Value

Same footbed as leather; fashion-icon silhouette; leather preferred for long-term value.

Why this is supported

A key fact:

the Birko-Flor Arizona sits on exactly the same cork-latex footbed as the leather versionscoastandfell.co.uk

so the price saving is from the upper only. Reddit users have a strong opinion:

Answer is always leather unless you find the others on a killer sale then yes!u/FluffyRelation7511 in r/Birkenstocks

and

Will never buy Birko Flor material again.u/Maelstrom760 in r/Birkenstocks

On the style front, the Arizona has high fashion credibility:

It was only in 1992 that the Arizona found fame in the fashion space, when Marc Jacobs dressed models in grungy looks and Arizonas (and Dr Martens) at his spring/summer 1993 show for Perry Ellisvogue.co.uk

and

On a runway in Paris back in 2012, the Birkenstock began its fashion comeback. Céline Creative Director Phoebe Philo started the style-comfort revolution when models came down the runway not in stilettos or dainty sandals, but fur-lined Birkenstocks.theodysseyonline.com

.

Fit

Regular/wide width avoids overhang; Arizona fits wide feet better than Mayari.

Why this is supported

Reddit users consistently recommend the regular/wide width to avoid foot overhang and toe crowding. One user noted:

I know you said you don't love the look of them, but it really does look like your foot would fit better in the "regular/wide". The narrows are squeezing your feet a bit, as shown by the sides of your feet hanging off slightly and your pinky toe being pressed into your other toes that all have a little healthy space between them.u/flute394 in r/Birkenstocks

In expert analysis, the Arizona is described as more accommodating for wide feet than the Mayari:

Arizona: Generally considered more accommodating for wider feet due to the open design and the ability to adjust both straps independently.versusguy.com

The outlet also notes that

The Arizona is the icon — a two-strap sandal with adjustable buckles that fits almost every foot. If you are new to Birkenstock, start here.feetheart.com

and that

Compared to other Birk styles like the casual Boston clog or the dressier Milano, the Arizona hits that middle ground.. That means you can wear it with just about all of your summer fits.menshealth.com

However, some wearers find that other models provide a better fit for their foot shape, so trying different styles is recommended. Additionally, Birkenstock sizing can be inconsistent between widths, so trying on both widths in-store is often advised.

Strap stretch

Birko-Flor upper does not stretch; initial strap fit is final.

Why this is supported

The Birko-Flor upper material does not stretch:

Birko-Flor does not stretch or soften significantly with wear; it remains relatively firm and maintains its shape.Does the Birko-Flor material stretch or soften with wear? Should I expect it to conform to my foot shape?

Therefore, the initial strap fit is the final fit, making correct sizing at purchase especially critical.

Construction

Hand-assembled in Germany via 17 stages, with pretzel buckle technique.

Why this is supported

Catalog confirmed the handmade construction:

The Arizona undergoes 17 stages in the production process, including baking the footbed, lining the straps and punching the upper.wwd.com

The buckle fixation uses the pretzel technique:

To create a durable buckle, Karl Birkenstock developed a fixing method, referred to as the “pretzel technique.”wwd.com

The metal hardware is nickel-plated; drying after moisture is recommended:

The metal pin buckles are typically nickel-plated and offer good corrosion resistance, but they can rust over time if regularly exposed to moisture or salt water. We recommend drying the buckles after exposure to damp conditions to prolong their life. Are the metal pin buckles resistant to rust, especially if worn in damp conditions?
Break-in

Birko-Flor upper requires little to no break-in period.

Why this is supported

The Birko-Flor upper typically requires little to no break-in period, unlike the leather versions.

Footbed

The same cork-latex footbed provides orthotic support in all Arizona versions.

Why this is supported

The cork-latex footbed is the same across all Arizona versions.

Critically, you're not getting a lesser footbed to go with the cheaper straps: the Birko-Flor Arizona sits on exactly the same cork-latex footbed as the leather versions.coastandfell.co.uk

Its design priorities were medically motivated:

The result is a footbed that provides firm arch support, a deep heel cup that reduces joint strain, and a toe bar for natural gait. It offers a structured alternative to unsupportive cushioned slides and is recommended for flat feet.

Heritage

Originally sold in health food stores as a therapeutic shoe.

This craftsmanship has been widely adopted:

Water resistance

Cork-latex footbed is not waterproof and may crack if wet.

Why this is supported

The cork-latex footbed is moisture-sensitive. Birkenstock states:

We don't recommend wearing these sandals in the rain or at the beach. The cork-latex footbed is not waterproof and can be damaged by moisture, and the suede lining is also water-sensitive. Prolonged exposure to water may cause the cork to soften, crack, or separate from the footbed. Can the cork-latex footbed get wet? Is it safe to wear these sandals in the rain or at the beach?

Some users have reported damage:

they have a few splits now appearing in the corku/Maelstrom760 in r/Birkenstocks

This means the sandals are not suitable for wet conditions and require careful drying if exposed.

Fashion credibility

Runway history and classic status give Arizona lasting style credibility over Chaco.

Why this is supported

The Arizona has been featured on major runways, starting with Marc Jacobs' 1993 show. Vogue recalls:

It was only in 1992 that the Arizona found fame in the fashion space, when Marc Jacobs dressed models in grungy looks and Arizonas (and Dr Martens) at his spring/summer 1993 show for Perry Ellis, a watershed moment for the industry.vogue.co.uk

This fashion pedigree elevated the Arizona above lifestyle sandals; TheOdysseyOnline contrasts:

While Birkenstocks join Converse, Doc Martens and even Louboutins in the ranks of classic footwear, Chacos are at risk of becoming the next Croc or Ugg.theodysseyonline.com

Originally a therapeutic comfort shoe sold in health-food stores, the Arizona is now Birkenstock's top seller, accounting for one-third of sandal sales.

Material

Birko-Flor upper shares cork footbed with leather but is less breathable and durable, buyers report.

Why this is supported

The Birko-Flor upper uses the same cork-latex footbed as leather versions, per coastandfell.co.uk:

Critically, you're not getting a lesser footbed to go with the cheaper straps: the Birko-Flor Arizona sits on exactly the same cork-latex footbed as the leather versions.coastandfell.co.uk

However, buyer experiences highlight tradeoffs in breathability and durability. One reddit user after 12 months reported:

Then they started to smell, washed them and cleaned them and I also rotate between 3 or 4 pairs, the rest are all leather and one pair of EVA for the pool. But honestly I now wear the BF ones at home and have noticed that they have a few splits now appearing in the cork.u/Maelstrom760 in r/Birkenstocks
Everyday use

Buyers wear them at home and for travel, with immediate comfort and arch support.

Why this is supported

Buyer reviews confirm the sandals are used at home and for travel. One reviewer says:

Weather and terrain suitability

Style versatility

Pairs with most casual summer outfits and has fashion runway history.

Why this is supported

It also has fashion credibility, having been featured on the Marc Jacobs runway and later at Céline, where

Durability and care

Buckles are long-lasting; cork and upper need moisture protection.

Why this is supported

The buckles are built for durability using the

pretzel techniquewwd.com

to prevent loosening. However, the cork footbed is vulnerable:

Prolonged exposure to water may cause the cork to soften, crack, or separate from the footbed. Can the cork-latex footbed get wet? Is it safe to wear these sandals in the rain or at the beach?

Users note that

Why this is supported

The Birko-Flor upper should be cleaned as follows:

Buckles

Buckles require drying after wet use to prevent rust and are attached via the durable pretzel technique.

Why this is supported

To prevent rust, Birkenstock recommends drying the metal buckles after each damp wear:

The buckles' durability is reinforced by the patented 'pretzel technique' attachment:

Why this is supported

The Arizona's cultural significance extends beyond ordinary sandals. theodysseyonline.com places it

alongside Converse and Doc Martens. Its fashion credibility was propelled when Céline's Phoebe Philo featured

Steve Jobs, an icon of function-over-form, was a regular Arizona wearer; a pair of his tan suede Arizonas is on display at Birkenstock's New York store, per WWD. The model's silhouette has also been reinterpreted by designers like Proenza Schouler and Manolo Blahnik through the 1774 line. Designed by Karl Birkenstock, the Arizona debuted in 1973 and has remained in production ever since.

Answer is always leather unless you find the others on a killer sale then yes!

  • Advice to try regular/wide width for better fit and comfort

I know you said you don't love the look of them, but it really does look like your foot would fit better in the "regular/wide". The narrows are squeezing your feet a bit, as shown by the sides of your feet hanging off slightly and your pinky toe being pressed into your other toes that all have a little healthy space between them.

  • Recommendation to choose oiled leather over synthetic Birkoflor for better quality

I say if you already plan to spend $100+ on birks just go for the oiled leather pair. The first pair is synthetic leather, don’t get me wrong it’s pretty durable but not good as the real deal

  • Long-term experience with Arizona Birko-Flor: comfort but odor and durability issues

Just over 12 mths of Arizona Birko-Flor. They are comfortable after initial break in period like all Birks. Will never buy Birko Flor material again. Only leather or suede. Birko-Flor starts to stink after a while even after a wash. They also feel cheap (which they are opposed to the leather). I've worn them through Europe Summer last year and Aussie summer this year. They got a little wet a few times, let them dry the correct way. Then they started to smell, washed them and cleaned them and I also rotate between 3 or 4 pairs, the rest are all leather and one pair of EVA for the pool. But honestly I now wear the BF ones at home and have noticed that they have a few splits now appearing in the cork.
