Product Insights

G.H. Bass's Larson Weejuns revive the 1936 original penny loafer, hand-sewn with a whale tail keeper and beefroll stitching, worn by JFK, Paul Newman, and Michael Jackson. But the wearer must endure an often intensely painful break-in and navigate fit quirks: they run large, favor narrow feet, and heel slippage persists even after sizing down. Once past the pain, a double-density foam midsole cushions from first wear, and the Goodyear welt allows resoling, though the thin leather sole wears in 6–12 months. The polished leather finish prevents rich patina but responds to wax. At $290 CAD, they undercut Alden and are more casual, but buyers find them less comfortable than Vinny's. They work with suits, jeans, shorts, and track pants across preppy, streetwear, and gorp-core, but the beefroll stitching makes them too casual for formal suits.

Verified claims

Heritage
Original 1936 Weejun, iconic penny loafer, worn by JFK, Paul Newman, Michael Jackson.
Construction
Hand-sewn leather upper, memory foam midsole, Goodyear welt, resoleable, whale tail keeper.
Styling
Smart-casual loafer, works with shorts, chinos, jeans, sportcoats, but not suits.
Break-in
Break-in often intensely painful; some achieve slipper-like comfort after months.
Cushioning
Double-density foam and rubber midsole cushion from first wear.
Fit
Runs large for most; best suited to narrow feet; heel slippage common.
Sizing
Buyers report the shoes run large; most size down 0.5 to 1.5 sizes but heel slippage often persists.
Foot shape
Buyers with narrow feet report a secure fit at Brannock size; those with wide feet often report painful tightness.
Versatility
Works with suits, jeans, shorts, and track pants; spans preppy, streetwear, and gorp-core.
Formality
Beefroll stitching makes it too casual for formal suits; may clash with vintage denim.
Patina
Polished finish prevents rich patina; natural colorways age well with wax polish
Positioning
At $290 CAD, it's cheaper than AE, more casual than Alden, and buyers find it less comfortable than Vinny's.
Longevity
Thin leather sole wears 6–12 months; Goodyear welt allows resoling.
Exterior care
Wax polish and toothbrush for stitching maintain the glossy finish and handsewn detailing.
Color
The 'Honey/Camel' variant is a warm mid-brown polished leather, not a light tan.
Design details
Features hand-sewn whale tail penny keeper and beefroll stitching.
Model identity
Larson preserves original whale tail penny keeper and moccasin-inspired beefroll stitching.

  • User shares positive experience with Weejuns despite negative online reviews, noting good fit for narrow feet and nice natural leather appearance

After seeing loads of negative comments on forums about the current Bass Weejuns, I ended up trying a pair and loving them. The 2 key positives for me: 1. The Weejuns in natural looking leathers are actually....really nice looking. On the Bass website, it's easy to differentiate between the natural leathers and those with the heavy artificial shine finish. 2. Weejuns fit slightly narrower feet great and are very comfortable. I do fine in D width laceups, but have a perpetual problem with loafers where my normal size feels like it's slipping off but sizing down feels wrongly small. Weejuns hug your feet really well in your normal, Brannock-measured size, and work if your feet are slightly narrow/low volume.

  • Positive review: Weejuns break in comfortably and offer genuine leather sole value at $80

I love weejuns, personally. They are one layer of leather with no reinforcement around the toe, so they break in like slippers. It can take a little time and hurt your feet while they do, but once they get there, they're shockingly comfortable in my experience. I'm not in love with the look of the shiny coated leather, but they have some upgraded premium pairs without it, and even with it, it's an established preppy look that you can just lean into. And if you've ever wanted something with leather soles you can wear casually, they're it. Perfect option. At $80, go for it. You're not going to get anything else with an honest to god leather sole at that price- they're blake/rapid, so it's not just glued on, either.

  • Critique of Weejuns' styling difficulty despite widespread recommendations

Ordered these exact loafers from gh bass a while back thinking they’d pair great with my vintage 501’s and ran into the exact same issue lol. Might just be something about the design of the weejuns themselves, but seems odd that so many people would recommend them if they were difficult to style

  • Negative experience: Hated the Weejuns, switched to Allen Edmonds for a night-and-day difference

Bought a pair second hand. Hated them. Kept thinking they’d get better with time but never did. Then I found a used pair of Allen Edmonds loafers to replace them and the difference is night and day. GH Bass are cheap and tight in all the wrong places. Your feet deserve better.

  • Extremely painful experience: Weejuns are described as 'little death traps' due to multiple comfort issues

Weejuns are hands down the. most. painful. shoes I have ever purchased. And it wasn't one thing, it was all the things. The side was too high for my ankle bone, they have no padding, they are too tight and stiff, the heel rubbed. I tried breaking them in for years and then just left them too rot in my closet. So cute. But little death traps.

  • Sizing is dramatically large: user typically size 8 needed to size down to possibly 6.5

i just ordered a pair, im a size 8 in everything but oh my goodness were the 8's in the weejuns huge. i reordered for a size 7 and i'm thinking i could even go down to a 6.5 bc the 7 slips in the heel. crazy
