Product Insights

The Tom Wood Kay Mother-Of-Pearl Signet Ring is a bolder unisex piece featuring an 11mm mother-of-pearl face set in a 4mm band of nickel-free 925 sterling silver with rhodium plating, priced at 539 CAD and positioned as a value alternative to David Yurman. Its hypoallergenic composition and comfortable fit rely on precise sizing from the start, as the inlay precludes resizing. Over 6–12 months of daily wear, the rhodium plating gradually wears to reveal a two-tone patina, while the mother-of-pearl develops micro-scratches and a warm iridescence from skin oils; the ring requires removal for handwashing and periodic replating. Some units may have plating defects, but the responsive warranty covers replacements. The tradeoff is a dynamic, aging aesthetic versus the need for careful initial sizing and ongoing maintenance.

Verified claims

Sizing
Order correct size from start—no resizing possible; sizes S/M/L/XL correspond to US 6-9.
Fit impact
Wrong fit reduces durability and comfort by concentrating wear on knuckle or inlay.
Plating patina
Rhodium plating wears gradually, revealing darker silver for a two-tone effect.
Inlay patina
Mother-of-pearl develops micro-scratches and warm iridescence from skin oils.
Ring structure
Correct sizing ensures even wear; the 4mm band resists deformation.
Care
Mother-of-pearl etches from mild acids and scratches from everyday abrasives.
Lifespan
Rhodium plating wears through in 6–12 months of daily wear, revealing the silver beneath.
Replacement support
Tom Wood replaces defective rings; resizing not possible.
Value
Priced at 539 CAD, below David Yurman but above Catbird, with wider 11mm inlay and rhodium plating.
Aging
Develops a two-tone patina and micro-scratches; requires removal for handwashing and periodic replating.
Quality assurance
Some units have plating defects; covered by responsive warranty.
Face size and fit
The 11mm mother-of-pearl face and 4mm band create a bolder unisex look, but the flush-set inlay prevents resizing.
Design comparison
Delivers a similar stone-on-metal aesthetic as David Yurman at roughly half the price, with a minimalist Nordic design.
Durability
4mm band resists bending; rhodium can be replated every few years.
Resizing
Cannot be resized after purchase due to mother-of-pearl inlay.
Allergen safety
Nickel-free 925 sterling silver and rhodium plating, plus correct fit, sustain the hypoallergenic barrier.
Comfort
4mm band spreads force for comfortable wear; non-resizable inlay makes initial sizing crucial.
Hypoallergenic
The recycled 925 silver and rhodium plating are nickel-free, safe for sensitive skin.

  • Detailed explanation of porosity defect in Tom Wood ring

I’ve had this happen to a batch of silver rings I purchased from a manufacturer that I got plated in gold (2.5 microns). They looked totally fine in silver, but after I got them back from the plater, the rings had little dots like the ones on your ring. I discussed the issue with the plating facility and they said the castings had porosity (tiny pits) which became more noticeable after plating. So, I contacted the manufacturer and they said they normally plate the rings with a very thick layer of silver to fill the pits, followed by gold plating. So I suspect with you ring, the plating wore off and exposed the porosity.
