Product Insights
Building on Ralph Lauren's 1973 reimagining of the early 20th-century Aran Islands cable knit, this sweater merges a polo shirt silhouette with a cable-knit sweater. Its twisted cable construction yields a sharper pattern and firmer hand, using more yarn for a denser, more insulating structure. However, buyers report collar stretching and pilling that diminish long-term value, and the $178 price trades brand cachet against lower-priced alternatives like Quince's $42 version, with Reddit advising to wait for sales. The 100% cotton knit is machine washable but less durable than wool, and the regular fit prioritizes relaxed ease. Available in white and navy, the pony logo and authentic knit details distinguish it from replicas, but care (cold wash, lay flat) is needed to mitigate wear.

Deep Research
How the price compares to similar polo sweaters
- The embroidered pony logo and the brand’s history as the originator of the mass-market polo shirt in 1972 grant this sweater a preppy, aspirational identity that purely functional or DTC alternatives cannot match, accounting for a portion of its premium over brands like Quince.
- This sweater’s regular fit—a hallmark of Ralph Lauren’s “classic fit” philosophy that prioritizes relaxed ease—diverges from the slim-fitting silhouettes prevalent among competitors like Quince and many contemporary brands, making it a more forgiving choice for layering or for those seeking a traditional collegiate look rather than a body-conscious cut.
- The twisted-cable construction produces a raised, intertwined surface that is richer in texture than Quince’s airy open-knit mesh ($42 USD) and the dense seed-stitch of J.Crew’s sweater polo (described by a reviewer as “very heavy and a bit stiff”), giving this top a more pronounced sweater presence suitable for dressed-up casual wear.
The design lineage of the polo-sweater hybrid
- Ralph Lauren launched its cable knit sweater in 1973, first rendered in Italian cashmere, and trimmed the traditional fisherman’s bulk while preserving its insulating comfort — transforming a workwear garment into a luxury staple that has anchored the brand’s knitwear for over five decades.
- The cable knit’s intertwined rope pattern originated on the Aran Islands as a utilitarian thermal layer for fishermen, giving any Polo garment featuring it a lineage of function-first craftsmanship and maritime heritage.
- Robert Redford’s cream cable knit in 1974’s The Great Gatsby — a film honored with the Academy Award for Best Costume Design — cemented the sweater as a hallmark of American aspiration and preppy style, infusing any Polo cable knit with cinematic old-money cachet.
- The twisted cable construction on this version uses a tighter, more angular knit than traditional rounded rope cables, resulting in sharper pattern definition and a firmer hand feel that give the sweater a more contemporary look while staying rooted in the heritage motif.
- By pairing a two-button polo collar and short sleeves with an all-over cable knit, this sweater fuses the brand’s signature preppy shirt with its iconic textural knit, creating a hybrid that reads as elevated sportswear — smart enough for tailored trousers, relaxed enough for shorts.
Combed cotton benefits and twisted-cable durability
- The twisted-cable pattern isn't just visual — crossing stitches stack yarn on yarn, creating a denser, more insulating fabric panel than flat jersey; that extra substance gives the short-sleeve polo a substantial knit-weight feel without overheating, making it suitable as a standalone piece in mild weather and as a textured mid-layer when temperatures drop.

Q&A
3 answered- Is this sweater machine washable or does it require dry cleaning?
- Care instructions are not listed for this specific sweater, but similar 100% cotton Ralph Lauren sweaters are labeled machine washable or dry clean [1]. We recommend checking the care tag inside the garment for the most accurate instructions.
- How heavy or thick is this sweater? Is it suitable for warm weather or more of a mid-layer?
- This is a medium-weight textured cotton knit sweater. The short sleeves and cotton construction make it suitable for mild to warm weather as a standalone piece, though the cable-knit adds enough substance to also serve as a light mid-layer [1].
- How does the twisted cable knit hold up to washing and wear? Is it prone to snagging or pilling?
- There are no customer reviews available yet for this sweater. Based on general knowledge of Ralph Lauren's quality, the 100% cotton twisted cable knit should hold up well to washing and wear when cared for properly. Cotton knits can pill with friction, but the twisted yarn construction tends to be more durable than standard cable knits. We recommend machine washing cold and laying flat to dry to minimize pilling and snagging.

Color variety draws buyer to cable knit sweater
The main thing that’s drawing me to the cable knit sweater is the color variety. I have some of their wool sweaters as well which I’m very satisfied with. I would definitely stick to them if they had the same color assortment so I guess I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

The cable knits are not really good quality, as I own 4 of them. For the price point I'd choose other companies for more longevity
