The classic white Adidas stripes are kinda the point of the outfit, imo. Notice how every pic you posted has a white top and all but one has white socks. The white stripes are what ties the disapparate pieces together. If you do go off-brand, then I'd be sure to choose a close imitation, but I think the fact that Adidas is a classic, instantly recognizable athletic wear brand is part of the look. Generic gym shorts wouldn't carry their own weight, per se, as the focal point of the outfit. I wouldn't buy the Adidas shorts if it's *only* for this trend because I doubt it'll have a long shelf life, but they're a good investment on their own. A pair of solid-color, three-stripe Adidas shorts won't go out of fashion once this trend passes. They'll just go back to being a wardrobe basic and you can continue wearing them as normal gym shorts. It isn't a bad thing to own some decent quality athletic wear, especially if your only pair is from middle school. Tbh I don't know how you've gone so long without more. To me, gym shorts are in the same category of wardrobe staples as jeans, plain T-shirts, etc., not as fashion pieces but for day to day functionality.
